and mid-level clouds. there could be some sprinkles down around monterey. offshore, our drive pattern is going to stay with us. it is 53 downtown with 51 in palo alto. for most of us, it's milder, especially in livermore. we have some fog in concord this morning. air quality remains moderate as high pressure keeps the pollutants close to the surface. we will look at clouds lifting through the afternoon, reagan and partly conditions and temperatures in the upper 50's. we will have warmer weather by the end of the week. liz: the tsunami advisory has been canceled for the california coast. the national weather service said everyone should remain cautious near the coast as

strong currents exist. an underwater volcano a rafted. this is the blast, which triggered a tsunami advisory for alaska, hawaii, the entire west coast of the united states. waves in ocean beach were so strong they snapped a surfboard. firefighters safely brought one surfer to shore. they heard screams from another server in the water. he was brought in safely. safety is with the tonga community community. they're waiting to hear from family and friends in the islands. we spoke to some local tongan's. >> this is our hope. it >> for many, the past 24 hours have been an emotional roller coaster. >> none of us heard heard from

anybody. >> after a volcano eruption, the country was hit by a devastating tsunami. now, many tongan' tongan' tong'n haven't heard from friends or family. the reverend is the pastor of first tongan assembly of god church. his son is currently in tonga. >> we haven't heard from them for almost 24 hours. we believe and have hope that something good is going to come from this. >> it's a similar story across the region. michelle helps run a tongan restaurant and grocery store. >> family is a huge thing in the polynesian culture. if a couple of families are being affected, it affects all of us. >> her heart breaks for those still in the country. many come from humble

backgrounds. >> you can't help but wonder how they are going to rebuild right after this. >> despite the hardships, those i talked to said they are confident the community will recover. that includes the reverend, who says his people are strong. he still requests one thing from those wishing to help. >> i am asking anybody who believes in god, remember tonga in your prayers. liz: yesterday was a much different scene in santa cruz then 2011. a massive earthquake off the coast of japan generated a tsunami in california. it caused when he million dollars worth of damage to the santa cruz harbor. this is video from yesterday. wind and waves buffeted this rock beach near fort baker. people came out to check on their boats and keep an eye on

the tide. there were some dramatic moments as waves pounded the shoreline near pacific appear in san mateo county. water drenched the road the on. some surfers couldn't resist the unusually high waves. this is my front door. liz: this is video from pacifica. she lives on beach boulevard, not far from the municipal peer and not far from the tsunami surge. the advisory got the attention of thousands in the bay area. it did leave some neighbors running for safety after a surge of water poured in one community. we have the story from there. >>

tsunami waves arrived saturday, ripping this boat dock off the front of her home. two boats and the dock were cast adrift. >> the water came in. you can see it right there. that's the edge of the balcony. i ran inside and grabbed my daughter. >> the tsunami surge returnednee cycles, strong up to send the runaway dock crashing into support beams at the apartment complex. >> be careful. >> the dock was picking up momentum. that was a little bit scary. >> seeing these waves rolling in and the water level being significantly higher, think king tied but on steroids. >> a tsunami advisory is in

weather service official announces new tsunami warning for american samoa. it's a stronger level than an advisory, which is what we had in the bay area. people were told to get to higher ground immediately. this is video from fiji. a warning was encouraging people to stay away from shorelines. you see water reaching the property line, causing flooding near bungalows. back here at home, we were over the berkeley marina as 100 people were evacuated following the tsunami advisory. the evacuation was limited to the dock and boats. roads near the marina are open. authorities got the all clear from the state just before 4:00 yesterday afternoon. everyone is still urged to use caution on boats and docks. lisa, let's get a check outside. it's much, this morning. we've got a lot of cloud cover. lisa: temperatures are mild,

interview on this week at 8:00 this morning. moving on, when it comes to the climate, the recent storms were welcome news. they are putting focus on a dangerous source of pollution that surges into the bay along with the storm water. new research is pointing to potential solutions. >> walk along and you will likely see trash heading toward san francisco bay. david lewis says much of it comes from the nearby freeway and local storm drains. >> every time it rains, anything on the street goes into the storm drains and into the bay unfiltered. we see this on all the freeways. >> the pollution you can see is only part of the threat. floating alongside and often invisible our micro plastics,

tiny particles that could come from clothing, cigarettes, even the rubber from car tires. >> when the tire hits the road, it wears off these tiny bits of tires. they are practically microscopic. >> third effects could be devastating to salmon and other marine life. in recent studies, they set up to document the likely sources of micro plastics. they confirmed that stormwater water is a main culprit. >> our study revealed that micro plastics are mostly coming from outdoor rain. they were washing across outdoor surfaces and carrying micro plastics into the bay. it the downpours of swept this winter, they created runoff that pulls micro plastics along with it. with a better understanding of where micro plastics come from, researchers are hoping we could come up with innovative

solutions from new technology to changing all behavior. remember the rubber particles? several countries -- companiesom are engineering devices designed to capture the warm rubber before it is left on the road. researchers say limiting the tiny clothing fibers is another opportunity. >> if you throw some hangers on your shower rack and dry some of your close that way. it will reduce the micro plastics get into the bay. they won't be going out of your dryer. >> new efforts by cities and the state to cut down on plastic use. >> the less there the environment. it >> limiting the pollution and micro plastics that can be launched into creeks, streams, ultimately san francisco bay.
