announcer: building a better bay area, moving forward, finding solutions. this is abc 7 news. >> the tonga tonga tonga tonga anxiously waiting to hear from friends and family after a devastating tsunami. april cannick correction cut internet to the islands. the effects of a tsunami advisory along the entire west coast felt right here in the bay area. this is abc 7 news at 9:00 a.m. thank you for joining us. we are going to get to that story in just a moment, but first, a quick look at the weather today with lisa argen. a much calmer morning. lisa: the peak wave height

yesterday was around port st. louis, about four feet over what they normally see. everywhere else was less than that in this morning they have the cloud cover to show you and you can see some returns here, maybe some sprinkles around monterey, hollister and gilroy. for now, mostly cloudy. 59 in half moon bay. looking at numbers from the mid 40's santa rosa tenure 50 in livermore. air quality is good. moderate elsewhere. we are watching temperatures, today. this morning, already mind there from 7-9 degrees and the fog still with us in concord. at the clouds thin out throughout the afternoon, upper 50's, near 60 today. we'll talk about mlk jr. day in a few minutes. liz: this morning the snobby advisory has been canceled for the entire california coast.

the national weather service as ever which remain cautious give the coast as lingering strong currents likely still exists. the advisory was issued after that underwater volcano erupted near the islands of the country of tonga. incredible satellite images show the blast which triggered a tsunami advisory for alaska, hawaii, and the entire west coast of the united states. waves at ocean beach were so strong they snapped a surfboard. san francisco firefighters safely brought one server t andm another surfer in the water. he was also, thankfully, brought in safely. in safely is what the tongan- american community is hoping for, anxiously waiting to hear from friends and family on the islands. tim johns focus on local tongan's and shares their stories. >> a prayer. chris: for many come of the past

24 hours have been an emotional roller coaster. >> after underwater volcano erupted, the nearby island country of tonga was hit by a devastating tsunami. the effects reason felt here in california, some 5400 miles away. many in the bay area say they have not heard from friends or family. the reverent is the pastor of the first assembly of god church. his son is currently in tonga. >> we still trust even though we haven't heard from them for almost 24 hours now, but we believe and have hope that something good is going to come out from this. >> it is a similar story for many across the region. michelle helps run a restaurant and grocery store. >> family is a huge thing in the polynesian culture, and so if a couple families are being affected, it affects all of us. >> she says her heart breaks for

those in the country, many of whom come from humble backgrounds. >> you can't help but wonder how they are going to be able to rebuild right after this. >> despite the hardships they are facing, those i talked to on saturday night say this, the reverend recesses people are strong, but he still requests one thing from those wishing to help. >> i'm just asking anybody who believes in god, please, remember tonga in your prayers. >> yesterday was a much different scene in santa cruz than back in 2011. this is video from then, when a massive earthquake off the coast of japan generated a tsunami in california, something you might remember. it caused $20 million in damage to the santa cruz harbor. windwindwindwindwindwindwindwind

area yesterday. people came out to check on their boats and to keep an eye on the tide. and this is some dramatic moments as the waves pounded the shoreline in san mateo county. water rushed over the waterfront, drenching the road beyond. some surfers could not resist the unusually high waves. >> jesus. alright, well, here is my front door. >> and this is video from savannah peterson. she lives not far from the municipal peer and not far at all from the tsunami surge. the tsunami advisory got the attention of thousands in the bay area and it did leave some neighbors running for safety after a surge of water poured into one waterfront community. we have that story. >> holy --

holy --. >> this was the scary moment tsunami waves arrived in tiburon saturday, ripping this boat dock off the front of haley's home, casting two boats and the dock adrift. >> the water just came in, took the dock out. the edge of the dock inside, grabbed my daughter, packed up my car. >> for several hours, the synonymy search returned in cycles, strong enough to send the runaway dock crashing into support beams at the apartment complex. >> the dock definitely was picking up momentum as it was heading toward this building and that was a little scary. >> for lack of a better expression.

>> we have a tsunami advisory in effect. stay out of the water. >> they advised people to stay away from ocean beach. >> reevaluate your plans if they involve going into the water for today. >> many people still flocked to the beach, cameras ready to capture any big waves. >> the waves definitely look like they are bigger, but kind of hoping for even bigger waves to just view. >> i don't get this kind of excitement every day. wanted to see it for myself. >> the advisory close to baker beach and folks were warned about the possible danger. >> i'm a science teacher so i'm just curious about these types of things and wanted to see firsthand. >> u.s. coast guard cutters were seen patrolling the shoreline. it was a day no one saw coming. did you ever expect this would happen? >> no, i will take tsunami alerts more seriously now.

liz: language that you are hearing as a u.s. national weather service official announces the tsunami warning from american samoa. a warning is a stronger level than advisory, which is what we had in the bay area. people were told to get to higher ground immediately. here is video from fiji, a tsunami warning issued for the island, encouraging people to stay away from shorelines. you can see water reaching some property lines, causing flooding near bungalows. the water reached nearly 100 feet inland from the shoreline. back at home, sky seven was over at the berkeley marina has more than 100 people were evacuated following a tsunami advisory. police say the evacuation was limited to the docks and the boats along the shoreline. authorities got the a the a from the office of emergency services just before yesterday afternoon and everyone is still urged to use caution on boats and docks.

christine sloan has the details of the incident. >> a dramatic scene now over in north texas. a hostage situation at the congregation beth israel synagogue in a suburb outside of fort worth coming to an end late saturday. >> this evening, the hostage rescue team breached the synagogue. they rescue the three hostages and the subject is deceased. >> after 10 hours, a massive response from the fbi swat teams and several local police departments. >> today's results, which was four safe hostages in the situation resolved, was really a result of a long day of hard work by nearly 200 law enforcement officers from across this region, the fbi, atf, and texas dps. >> sources familiar tell abc an armed man took four people

hostage including a rabbi. >> the rabbi is a personal friend of mind. he is a close friend of mine and so obviously it is very personal , as it has been put out in the media that he was one of the hostages. >> sources also tell abc news the suspect demanded the release of a known pakistani terrorist who is serving 86 years at carswell air force base near fort worth. she had alleged ties to al qaeda and was convicted in 2010 attempted murder of u.s. soldiers and fbi agents. the white house and department of homeland security were briefed on the situation throughout the day. the fbi says the investigation is ongoing. front and center in washington this week as lawmakers try to hash out an agreement. we look at the freedom to vote act and how it could impact the way you cast your ballot.

alex has the details from washington. alex: a major showdown looming on capitol hill over voting rights. >> what we want? >> a march in the nation's capital plan for martin luther king jr. day hoping to pressure lawmakers to support new voting rights legislation. a key campaign promise by president biden. biden: i hope we can get this done. the honest got answer is i don't know. >> the bottom line is democrats are struggling to advance legislation including the freedom to vote act. the bill would create a national standard for voting, designate election day federal holiday, and restore voting rights to the formerly incarcerated. since the 2020 election, a number of states have taken action that critics warn restrict access to the polls. in fact, at least 19 states passed 34 laws restricting access to voting. georgia now criminalizes handing out water to voters waiting in line.

texas band 20 forever drive-thru voting, both states being sued by the department of justice. in florida, state republicans enacted new restrictions requiring felons to first pay back legal financial obligations before being allowed to cast a ballot. >> that is not what we voted for. >> judy spent 18 months behind bars for drug trafficking two decades ago. she has been free ever since but is ineligible to vote, saying she owes nearly $53,000. fees related to her conviction. >> did anybody have to pay to get their right to vote? but i have to pay to get mine back? >> she is one of more than 770,000 felons who have served time but are denied a right to vote until their debts are cleared. it is a population large enough to change election. former president trump won florida in 2020 by just over three to 70,000 votes.

some are looking to washington to intervene. >> i want to be able to let my voice be heard not only for me, but for those that can't vote. >> republican supporters of many of these new access restrictions say they are meant to ensure secure elections, but critics counter that they make it harder for mostly minority voters to exercise their rights. apple employees are reportedly required to get a covid booster shot. the mandate was first reported to require employees to work in stores and corporate offices get boosted. those who do not get a shot will be tested frequently starting february 15. in october, apple started requiring unvaccinated workers to be tested daily before going into the office. vaccinated workers have been tested weekly. today there will be a mobile covid-19 vaccination clinic in san jose that runs from 10:00

until 3:00 on center road. it is free, and you do not need to register or be insured to get vaccinated were boosted. lisa, let's get a longer, further check of the forecast. you are saying potentially spring-like conditions later this week. lisa: the forecast models are not really grabbing onto it yet, but we could see some 70's by the end of the week around san jose, maybe out in santa rosa. yesterday, we saw near 70 in monterey. this morning, we have a lot of that height and mid-level cloud cover still with us. there has been a system spinning offshore and eventually we will spin up to the north and it will move on out of here in the next 48 hours. as for today, all eyes here on the mid south, the east coast into tomorrow, where a big storm, a lot of cold air in place at the service and warmer air overriding it making that a

mess from south carolina. accumulating ice as well as atlanta. look at nashville, a mixture of rain, snow and sleet. as it goes up the coast, temperatures warm and it is going to be raining in boston. the as we get in closer, the cities are not used to all the snow. we have got the changeover that is going to be happening and in fact, the winds are another element that is going to provide a big problem, a lot of light delays. then we had snow in the surrey and places where you would expect in the upper midwest. for us, here we are with the cloud cover. air quality has been moderate and we are in the low 50's right now from san francisco, oakland. 61 in half moon bay. that is pretty mild even with the clouds. golden gate bridge, they are scattered about. mid-level, high clouds throughout much of the day.

46 by the delta. following into the east bay. there has been enough of it that it has been an issue over part of concord and fairfield. air quality still remains moderate and we need another air mass to come on in and shake things up a little bit, but it doesn't look like a whole lot of wind is going to be with us as we get toward the latter part of the week. the high pressure will be, and that is how strong it gets, is to determine how much warmth we see by the end of the week. mostly the clouds to start out. the drive pattern is continuing into the weekend, could even be beyond into the end of january. here is a look at today. i 6:00, 7:00, we had had a nice day with a good deal of son. by tomorrow, the homily, more clouds, the system moves out. some springlike conditions as temperatures warm up. wednesday is a cooler day. friday we could see 70's from san jose, santa rosa.

new research is pointing to potential solutions that might limit the threat. >> walk along in oakland and will likely see trash heading toward san francisco bay. david lewis says much of it comes from the nearby 880 freeway and local storm drains. >> every time it rains, everything on the streets goes into the storm drains and straight out into the bay unfiltered. we see this on all of the freeways and all of our urban roads. >> experts say the pollution you can actually see is only part of the threat. floating right alongside, often invisible to the naked eye, are micro plastics, tiny particles that can come from clothing, cigarette, and even the rubber from car tires. >> the way it wears off is when the tire hits the road, it wears off little tiny bit of tires that are so small they are practically microscopic. >> but those effects can be devastating to fish like salmon and marine life. kelly moran and her colleagues

set out to document the likely sources and also confirmed that stormwater is a main culprit. >> our study for the first time revealed that micro plastics were mostly coming from outdoor rain and washing across outdoor surfaces and they were carrying micro plastics into san francisco bay. >> in other words, the kind of downpours that have swept through this winter, creating runoff that literally pulls micro plastics along with it. but now with a better understanding of where micro plastics come from and how their trent, researchers are hopeful they will be able to come up with innovative solutions: everything from introducing new technologies to changeable behaviors. remember the rubber particles? several companies including one called entire collective are engineering onboard devices designed to capture the worn rubber before it is left on the road and potentially recycle it. and limiting the tiny clothing

maybe this is a big deal. and we were looking out toward the beach and you see this flume behind me. all of a sudden the water was going up and up and up and up. >> all day long, coast guard crews patrolled the beach to monitor the water level. beaches across the area were covered in debris and water levels were much higher than they usually were. >> we came out about 7:30 and we heard that there was a tsunami warning, so we stayed out on the block. >> she said she began her day on high ground to avoid any potential tsunami. she says emergency crews were all over the beaches. >> you could really see it at the harbor, there were a lot people out, and monitor police and firefighters, and you can see almost like a river flowing out to the ocean. >> despite the tsunami threat, beachgoers were not deterred from going you're the water. surfers responded and then he

got close to the water throughout the day. >> we were listening for sirens from about 7:30 in the morning and then we heard them go crazy. lots of sirens. >> as the day went on, more residents returned to the beach. however, some locals did tell me that for a saturday, it was much less crowded than usually is, mostly because of the tsunami threat that was going on in the early part of the day. liz: you can check out video from yesterday's tsunami on the abc 7 bay area connected tv app available for apple tv, android tv, amazon fire tv and roku. the winter searches putting hospitals on the brick this weekend. today, massachusetts but thousands of surgeries on hold because hospitals again are just on the brink. news reporter at the latest. >> the winter omicron surge straining the u.s. workforce. staff shortages devastating hospitals, many now struggling to care for the influx of

patients. nationwide, nearly 21,000 american admitted to hospitals with covid-19 every day. the largest hospital system massachusetts has patients pouring into hospitals. dr. john brownstein at the boston children's hospital saying the state hospitals are struggling with the overload. >> these hospitals are crushing under the weight of demand and really can't serve all patients that are in need. >> the u.s. reporting about 800,000 cases per day, a record high and a more than eightfold increase compared to early december. many schools struggling to stay open as a result. in texas, houston's principal stepping into help with custodial duties after janitors called in sick with covid. >> there is no such thing as position or title and so we believe in stepping in and helping when there is a need. >> a school district in austin

direction with some clouds and even some cooler weather in the short term. tomorrow, the holiday, and into tuesday. after that, looks like our fair weather friend high pressure is building back. this is a low-pressure system spinning off the coast, allowing for the clouds to move up. even a few sprinkles this morning. but that activity is pretty much negligible and we are looking at the cloud cover right now. you can see the layers making for some moderate to mild temperatures with low 50's, 52 san jose, 53 san francisco, but look at the coast. you can see no wind with 45 in santa rosa. upper 40's inland. that is where we had some fog. that cloud deck like a blanket

over us, all night long allowing for temperatures especially from hayward and livermore to be warmer than we were yesterday. we haven't seen 30's athe delta, the san joaquin valley, and even conquered. seeing half moon bay come up with 2.5 mile visibility, so be careful out there. the air quality has been moderate with a four day forecast taking this through monday that has allowed for moderate air quality. tuesday, we should get a little bit of a break and maybe some brighter conditions. it goes back and forth from good to moderate and as we look at the afternoon, we get a little bit brighter out here. it is kind of grey out here in the city with mostly clouds, partly cloudy the afternoon. a dry pattern. high-pressure really building and into the end of the workweek. looks like we are going to see temperatures well above average for a couple of days starting now and i think by about

thursday. the weekend looking particularly warm and dry. as we look at the rest of today, here are the high clouds that have been with us through the past couple of days. they continue throughout the day, but it will be now and again. the system is on the move and is going to bring a wind shift in cooler weather right on through tuesday which can be the coolest day. after that, looking at temperatures climbing. here is a look at parts of the south bay, in and around 60 degrees. tuesday is one of the cooler days. as we get into the middle of the week and then friday and even into saturday, the north end of the bay will see numbers near 70's. haven't even talked about salinas in monterey, probably well into the 70's. the storm track through the week ahead, well to the north. this is even into next weekend, about nine days out and we are dry. that takes esta the end of the month where we thought the
