>> building a better bay area, moving forward and finding solutions. this is abc 7 news. anchor: waiting and worrying, locals in the tongan-american community worried about family. you are watching abc 7 news live at 5:00. the governments of new zealand and australia are coordinating efforts to help tsunami damaged tonga. the new zealand military was able to send a surveillance aircraft to assess the damage. ash from the underwater volcano is hampering visibility. there have been no official reports of injuries or deaths in tonga but authorities have not made contact with some smaller

islands. japan is the latest country to lift its tsunami advisory. the bay area is still reacting to saturday's tsunami advisory which caused a lot of excitement and anxiety. it brought high water and some damage to the region. first responders say the event was a wake-up call. our reporter joins us live from the newsroom. reporter: the tsunami advisory got the attention of most of us with many of us wondering what we would do during a major tsunami advisory. first responders say be ready and have a plan. he began with an underwater ball condo -- volcano in tonga. >> seriously? reporter: big waves crashed on the waterfront.

and this area. panicked residents ran to safety. the water receded but though damage was -- but the damage was done. >> i will take tsunami alerts more seriously. reporter: more than 100 people were evacuated from their boats as a precaution. thousands of people around the bay area received alerts about the tsunami advisory. first responders say it helped warn the public of the possible danger. local beaches were evacuated. >> there is a tsunami advisory in effect. >> it is essential to make make that your family and your loved ones can get out of a disaster safely. reporter: california geologists issued updated maps.

the east bay, the surge reach parts of west oakland. and parts of fisherman's wharf and the financial district could also be impacted. >> there is still the for 2-3 feet of tsunami flow depths to knock people down. reporter: san francisco has several tsunami evacuation routes posted. >> having a plan and practicing a plan saves lives. reporter: experts say if you live near a coastal area the best advice is to move to higher ground. learn about evacuation routes. and create a family emergency plan should you get separated. anchor: sunday worship took on a somber tone for the tongan american community here in the bay.

your family. in oakland, businesses must post a business saying they will require proof of vaccination starting february 1 which includes establishments where food is served as well as entertainment venues, city hall and large indoor events at city-owned facilities. people 12 years or older must provide proof of vaccination. oakland is notifying all businesses in its tax database of the requirement. from masks and vaccines to changing roles and so much more. there is a lot to keep track of and to make it easy for you, we have put all of our stories in one place. that is abc 7 news/coronavirus. to the east bay, a castro valley woman is the latest target of a french bulldog theft at gunpoint and in this case, the suspect also stole her purse and car. again was walking tit -- megan was walking tito in the evening.

she told police 4-5 suspects rushed up and stole her purse and dog. the suspects used the keys inside the stolen purse drove off with her car. her family is raising money through gofundme for a reward. the family says they were aware of the thefts of the french bulldogs in bay area but not in their area. >> people think that this is they know this is a quick way to make a dollar but in reality, it is like you are stealing someone's child. we do everything with him. he has a member of our family. anchor: so drill. the alameda county sheriff's department is working and encouraging people to come forward with information.

♪ celebrate, let's have a jubilee ♪ ♪ they've been there for us ♪ ♪ let's be there for them ♪ dion: authorities have released the identity of the suspect that took a rabbi and three others hostage for 12 hours on saturday. a british citizen was shot dead after an fbi hostage rescue team stormed the synagogue. law enforcement officials tell us that the suspect claimed to have explosives in his backpack. he was demanding the release of a convicted terrorist who is in federal prison. president biden called the hostage taking an act of terrorism. >> we have the capacity to deal with the assault on the anti-semitism that is here. we are focused on making sure
