to see the rivalry roar back to life and with today's victory, the 49ers fans have some bragging rights. shifting gears to developing news, the latest on the developing situation in tonga. new zealand and australian governments are coordinating efforts to help the tsunami damaged region. the new zealand military sent a surveillance aircraft to assess the damage. ash from the underwater volcano is hampering visibility. there have been no official reports of injuries or deaths that authorities have not made contacts with some coastal areas and smaller islands. japan is the latest country to lift its tsunami advisory. most of the u.s. west coast canceled its advisory last night. the bay area is still reacting to the tsunami causing a lot of excitement and anxiety. it brought high water and some damage to the region.

first responders say it was a wake-up call to be prepared. we are joined live in our newsroom. reporter: tsunami advisory got the attention of most of us. likely many wondering what would we do during a major tsunami emergency? first responders say be ready and have a plan. it began with the eruption of an underwater volcano in tonga. tsunami waves rushed in here on saturday. big waves crashed onto the pacifica waterfront. >> holy [bleep]. reporter: timber ripped a boat off from in front of this apartment complex. panicked residents ran to safety. hours later the water receded but the damage was done. >> i will take tsunami alerts

more seriously. reporter: at the marina, more than 100 people were evacuated from their boats as a precaution. >> i got a ss72 alert on my phone. reporter: thousands received the alerts about the tsunami advisory and first responders say it helped notify the public about possible danger. >> there is a tsunami advisory in effect. >> this is so important to remember preplanning. it is essential to make sure that you can get out of a disaster safely. reporter: last summer, california state geologists updated hazard maps showing where the worst case flooding could occur with a tsunami. in the east bay, a surge could reach oak >> especially in the bay,

tsunami heights will not be that large but there is still the potential for 2-3 feet of tsunami flow deaths to knock people down and injure them. reporter: san francisco has several tsunami evacuation routes posted. >> they can save lives. reporter: experts say if you live near a coastal area, move to a higher ground during a tsunami emergency. learn about evacuation routes if your community has them and develop an evacuation plan with your family. dion: all good advice. thank you. sunday worship took on a somber tone for the tongan american community in the bay area. many are heartbroken and anxious today expressing deep concern for their homeland, friends, and family. >> i saw the wave coming in, right in to the front yard of

dion: authorities have released the identity of the suspect who took a rabbi and three others hostage for 12 hours at a north texas synagogue on saturday. british citizen was shot dead after an fbi hostage rescue team stormed the synagogue. law-enforcement officials tell abc news that the suspect claimed to have explosives in his backpack. president biden called the hostage taking an act of terrorism. >> we have this capacity to deal with the assault on the anti-semitism. we can rest assured that we are focused on making sure that we can deal with these kinds of acts. dion: all four of the hostages were rescued safely. reddish counterintelligence

dion: early voting starts this week for san francisco's special election coming up next month. voters will decide on a new assessor recorder and whether to recall threescore -- school board members. some voters will determine who will fit district 17's seat. election day is for very 15. tomorrow is martin luther king jr. day and the bay area is finding ways to honor dr. king's legacy despite the recent covid surge. oakland's terror project will host a car caravan tomorrow. it will wrap up a series of celebrations that have been happening over the long weekend.

san francisco's celebrations are going virtual as well with all indoor events for tomorrow moving online. the annual mlk march and prayed have also been canceled. getting to spencer christian, if there was a parade, there would be pretty good weather for it. spencer: nice day for parade -- for a parade. here's a look at live doppler seven. you can see areas of green in the south bay. it is moisture moving north. it is possible that a few drops from these clouds may hit the ground but at the moment, no reports of rainfall. just passing clouds and an increase in moisture. calm wind. partly cloudy, partly clear sky with calm conditions. the moon was just shining brightly on moment ago but you can see it's reflection off the shimmery bay waters. a lovely evening around the bay area.

alvarez. chris: 49ers and cowboys -- one of the greatest rivalries in the nfl. today was the first playoff dual between the teams since january, 1995. the moon box ready to go. the 49ers open with the ball and marched down the field. mitchell caps the 75 yard drive. 7-0, san francisco in a hurry. dak prescott finds cooper, a beautiful pitch and catch. 49ers lead at the break. penalties crushed the cowboys all day long. williams with the interception. a huge turnover. the 49ers and great scoring position. he has such great vision. 26 yards to the house. the cowboys fans did not like what they saw.
