up but this came up faster than anything i've ever seen. >> the district is reporting its highest snowfall this month since 2016. jobina: now to the volcanic eruption off the coast of tonga that caused tsunami waves in the bay area. this new video shows a mountain of dust in the sky. new zealand and australia have sent surveillance flights to survey the damage. that eruption sent a plume of ash and steam 12 miles into the air. new zealand officials have not report -- have not received any reports of deaths or injuries in tonga. getting that information may take several days. huge waves also had a significant impact on tonga's capital, washing boats ashore and damaging shops along the coast. ocean waves traveled more than 5000 miles to the bay area

coastlines. waves also flooded santa cruz harbor. we also -- we know a lot of you are interested in the science, it is one of the top stories on abc7news.com. we are hearing from experts about just how common underwater volcanoes are and the lasting impact they have on our environment. liz kreutz is live for us. liz: it really is very fascinating. we are here in pacifica, 48 hours after that tsunami advisory. check out how strong these waves are, how high this surf is. loofeople might be thinking of coming to the coast today and it is certainly something to be conscious of. even though we are seeing these strong waves right now, it is a much different picture than we saw on saturday. we have video from a woman who lives in pacifica, showing the water coming over the boardwalk,

even coming close to the front of her home. again, this was triggered by an underground volcano iraq and near the island nation of tonga -- underground volcano iraq and near the island nation of -- aquino iraq she and -- volcano eruption near the island nation of tonga. >> there must have been a very large amount of magma that was exposed, somehow from an underwater landslide, that then encountered the seawater and exploded really violently. liz: that is what prompted the tsunami advisory across the entire west coast. locally we saw flooding in santa cruz, impacts in tiburon and capitola. a question many people had this morning was could this happen again and maybe on a grander scale? the short answer is yes,

although experts tell us it is rare to see a tsunami triggered by an underground volcano eruption, compared to a tsunami from an earthquake. there are about 60 underground volcanoes about 100 miles off the coast of california. there is no immediate threat but it is something the usgs and national weather service continue to monitor. reggie: we are keeping an eye on the wave heights right now along our coast line. you can see heights all the way down to monterey bay, currently at six feet. that is pretty normal for this time in our tight cycle -- tide cycle. wave height along the west coast anywhere from four to six feet over the next 24 hours. over this weekend, that was a pretty violent volcano that did make some ripples along our current surf.

french bulldog stolen at gunpoint. the thieves in this case did not only take the dog, they stole the owner's purse and car. megan was walking her family's 15 month old dog on saturday. she told police four to five people with guns rushed up and stole her purse and her dog. about four hours later, the suspects used the keys inside the purse to drive off with her car. her family is raising money for a reward. >> it makes me nervous for other people but also makes me nervous that this is happening in our society right now. people think this is ok, and think of this is a quick way to make a dollar when in reality, this is like you are stealing somebody's child. we do everything with him, we take him everywhere. he is a member of our family. jobina: the alamedalamedalamedaa sheriffs office is working the investigation and is asking anyone with information to come forward. reggie: early voting starts this

week for san francisco's special election next month. some residents will vote in ides primary to fill the district 17 assembly seat. voters can send ballots back or start early voting tomorrow. election day is february 15. jobina: president biden is urging congressional lawmakers to champion access to the ballot box like dr. king did. democrats are struggling to advance voting rights bills in congress and they are facing tough opposition from republicans and some members of their own party. here is faith abubey with the debate about the path forward. faith: across the country, the covid-19 pandemic and artisan politics causing a major showdown over voting rights. an unprecedented wave of state laws critics say are restricting access to the polls, putting immense pressure on president biden to protect motor access to the ballot box before the november midterm elections.

police in england detained two teenagers in relation to the incident. it comes after u.s. authorities identified the hostage taker as a british man named malik faisal akram. our affiliate, captured the dramatic ending. it all unfolded saturday at convocation beth israel. akram interrupted a service, taking a rabbi and three others hostage. he could be heard on a livestream of the service. >> he was talking about israel and palestine. he had a gun. he implied he had a bomb in his backpack. liz: nearly 11 -- elizabeth: nearly 11 hours later, a frantic dash for freedom. the hostages escaping unscathed. akram was later found dead in the synagogue. the initial indication was that

he was shot by the hostage rescue team. the rabbi credited recent training, sing without the instruction they received, they would not have been prepared to act and flee. >> anytime you have an islamic type extremist or someone who purports to be that supposedly, that can end really badly. elizabeth: as the standoff unfolded, akram emitted the release of a convicted terrorist -- demanded the release of a convicted terrorist, convicted of plotting to kill u.s. soldiers in afghanistan. she is serving at 86 year sentence at a prison in fort worth, not far from the synagogue. a gun was recovered at the scene. akram also claimed to have explosives in his bag but no explosives were found. jobina: a heads up if you are heading to kaiser's oakland or richland medical centers. workers are planning to strike.

they say kaiser executives promised to make mlk day a paid holiday but recently delayed the agreement. health clinicians plan to picket outside the medical center at 8:00 this morning and they will march down to the headquarters and rally with community allies. reggie: covid case rates among teenagers are soaring according to the most recent city data. as cases go up, experts are seeing that teenagers continue to have a robust immune response against the virus. here is luz pena. luz: over 1500 san franciscans are pet -- testing positive for covid-19 every day. now the age group at the highest number of infections are 12 to 17-year-olds. >> i think a bunch of kids are now going to outdoor parties, because nothing has changed in school other than the fact that omicron started. luz: 12-year-old benjamin is about -- is right about one of the main can been factors to this increase.
