discussed with our details and laid out very clearly for president putin. >> reporter: so it's clear there is still no commitment from moscow to de-escalate. russia, of course, is looking for nato to promise never to admit ukraine as a member. the alliance has rejected that, but blinken is leaving open the door to future diplomatic talks including the possibility of another conversation between russian president putin and president biden. george? >> that is the hope. okay, mary. thanks very much. let's go to ukraine now. senior foreign correspondent ian pannell is on the scene. good morning, ian. >> reporter: yeah, good morning, george. this is, in fact, the front line between ukrainian troops and russian-backed rebels in the east of the country. since we were here last december the tension between russia and america over ukraine has only escalated dramatically. with both sides saying they didn't expect to break through today's talks, the pressure is as great as ever. there are now even more heavily armed russian troops massing east of here at the border and if vladimir putin orders his army to invade as president biden said he thinks he might, well, this is where his tanks

are most likely to roll into first. the kremlin repeatedly, of course, saying it doesn't intend to invade or attack but now there's draft legislation being discussed in the russian parliament to recognize these rebel-held areas as independent of ukraine. that's something that could lead to annexation, that's something that happened, of course, with crimea eight years ago. the general in command has been talking to us here. he's contradicting biden saying, i don't know what a small invasion could be. he wants to see even more military support from america arguing it could deter putin and he's warning that if russia isn't stopped here in ukraine, then no country is safe. george. >> ian pannell, thanks very much. coming up in our next hour, i'll have an exclusive interview with secretary of state antony blinken. he will join us live following the meeting and press conference with the russian foreign minister. michael. now to that winter emergency. the carolinas bracing for a dangerous ice storm. eth motois iwilm,

north carolina where they are bracing for the worst. good morning, kenneth. >> reporter: hey, michael. good morning. reinforcements are here and ready to go because north carolina is expecting to get hit hard by this storm with ice storm warnings in effect. duke energy has roughly 25 -- 2,500 contractors staged in and around wilmington and other parts of the coastline ready to go to help restore power. the governor of north carolina has declared a state of emergency, schools have canceled classes, and we also know drivers are being urged to stay off potentially icy roads. this is a one-two punch from north carolina, the second storm in several days, governor roy cooper has activated the national guard saying that at least a quarter inch of ice is expected to build leading to dangerous situations and significant power outages. michael. >> definitely some challenging weather there. kenneth, ginger is tracking that storm, plus the frigid cold millions are waking up to this morning. good morning, ginger. >> reporter: good morning, michael. this is merciless cold. we were out here for 20 minutes earlier when i was doing promos and inside ski gloves my fingers

>> reporter: this morning, a tale of two countries. as the omicron surge appears to be plateauing in some states, in other areas, the highly contagious variant is tightening its grip. >> the demands are outweighing the resources and puts a lot on healthcare workers who try to help every day. >> reporter: in illinois, hospitals continue to be overwhelmed. across the country more than 160,000 americans are now hospitalized with covid, a new pandemic high. double the number from about three weeks ago. >> we have to remember that even on the downslope of the wave, that can generate the same number of infections as when you're going up in cases. hospitals still can be overwhelmed for the next several weeks and unfortunately we will have many unnecessary deaths. >> reporter: in new york city, cases have dropped 46% in the last week, but the city maintains the nation's highest death rate, and the omicron wave is devastating the u.s. workforce.

in the southeast, more than 750 employees out this week after testing positive at ballad health which covers parts of tennessee, north carolina and kentucky. teacher shortages in oklahoma forcing some schools to bring in police officers to help teach classes. and in new mexico, the national guard called in to assist struggling schools. >> it's a very different way for us to utilize every state resource and public education is a priority. >> reporter: and the cdc is out with new data indicating that breakthrough infections among the vaccinated grew fourfold as omicron became the dominant variant. the unvaccinated were 16 times more likely to be hospitalized. george. >> whit johnson, thanks. we're going to go back to washington now where ivanka trump is in the sights of the hois january 6th committee. they're asking her questions about what was happening behind the scenes the day of the insurrection. our congressional correspondent rachel scott has the latest. >> reporter: this morning, the january 6th committee closing in on trump's inner circle asking to speak with the former

president's daughter and top adviser ivanka trump. on january 6th, she was seen here from a live stream by donald trump jr. backstage at that rally near the white house where trump repeatedly urged his vice president to reject the election results. that morning, the committee says ivanka trump was in the oval office and overheard a heated phone call with her father and vice president mike pence. our jon karl asking trump about that conversation for his book "betrayal." >> there was a report, and excuse my language, not mine, was in the report, and you talked to him that morning and you said, you could be a patriot, or you can be a [ bleep ]. did you really say that, or is that an -- >> i wouldn't dispute it. >> really? >> reporter: as the chaos unfolded at the capitol, lawmakers say they have specific evidence that white house officials repeatedly turned to ivanka trump to intervene and persuade president trump to address the ongoing lawlessness and violence on capitol hill.

>> we have firsthand testimony that his daughter, ivanka, went in at least twice to ask him to please stop this violence. >> reporter: during the attack, she posted this now-deleted tweet calling the rioters american patriots. in a statement her spokesperson pointing to that post saying she asked the violence to stop immediately. but declined to say whether she would cooperate with the investigation. and all of this comes just one day after the supreme court ruled against former president donald trump clearing the way for the house select committee to obtain hundreds of pages of white house records. we are told they have already started reviewing some of those and are expected to get more in the coming days, george. >> rachel scott, thanks very much. we know so many trump aides have not wanted to appear before that committee. we will see what ivanka trump decides. thanks. michael. going to turn now to peloton, stock is sinking and there are questions about if the company is halting production of its popular fitness equipment. our chief business correspondent rebecca jarvis has the latest for us this morning. good morning, rebecca. >> reporter: good morning, michael.

elementary assistant principal and emily grover, her daughter, accused of illegally accessing a computer in order to rig the results of her high school homecoming vote in her favor. carroll turning down a plea deal for a second time. her attorneys saying they haven't seen key evidence from prosecutors. >> verizon records, transcripts of hearings and meetings which were done in this particular case have not been provided to us. >> reporter: the judge rebuffing that request and announcing that carroll's case would go to trial at the end of the month. florida officials began investigating the duo's alleged scheme in november 2020 after the school district reported hundreds of students' accounts at j.m. tate high school have been hacked containing sensitive information about students including medical history, test scores and personal information. authorities say they found 246 votes cast for the homecoming court linked to carroll's cell phone and computers at her home. in november, the mother/daughter

duo spoke to abc news in an exclusive interview. how are we at the point where you're facing felony charges? >> we don't know. we don't know. >> reporter: when pressed on why they didn't take a plea deal, mother and daughter were defiant. >> we didn't do it and we have evidence that proves that we didn't. >> that's a big bet to make. >> but we did not do what they say we did and i'm not willing to plea out to something that i didn't do. >> reporter: last week emily pled no contest on all charges. agreeing to enter a pretrial diversion program that includes 100 hours of community service and paying court fees. if she completes it, the charges would be dismissed and her record wiped clean. meanwhile, her mother saying in a statement to abc news, we were disappointed that the case was not continued but are hopeful that means the evidence we've requested is coming. adding, i look forward to closure. because she refused to take that plea deal, laura carroll is set to stand trial on january 31st. if she is convicted, she faces 16 years in prison, guys.

on "gma." we have a lot of news to get to as well. the latest on the meeting to head off a russian invasion of ukraine. secretary of state antony blinken met with russia's foreign minister this morning as russian troops massed at the ukrainian border and back to mary bruce. good morning, mary. >> reporter: good morning again, george. this certainly is a critical moment with those tens of thousands of russian troops amassed along the ukraine border, and president biden saying a russian invasion is looking likely. the u.s. secretary of state and russian foreign minister met this morning to see if they can try and avert this crisis. now secretary blinken just emerged from that sitdown moments ago describing their conversation adds frank and substantive saying this was not a negotiation, but a candid exchange of concerns and ideas, and he is promising a swift and severe united response if russia invades. look. he said they didn't expect any major breakthroughs here. russia, of course, is demanding that knnato promise to never adt ukraine as a member and pull back troops from eastern europe.

you. and that's our approach this year. movies bring us together and they enlist a multiplicity of emotions and they make us dream and aspire, so if you love the movies, this is the show for you this year. we're centering the audience in this show. that is one thing i will tell you and you'll see that in everything that we're doing leading up to the show. >> and like you said you just got to love movies. your movies inspire and they make us laugh, they do all that stuff and we know "ready to love" is a hit. season 4 wraps up tonight. season 5 starts next friday, so why was it important to help you create these dating shows that showcase black love? >> you know, what's interesting, first of all, we can't get enough of love, right? i mean, love is always a good thing and this was actually my first foray into the unscripted space. i've had a chance to do a few other shows but this was my first one and it's the number one show on friday nights in the demo. people are really loving it and

i remember first going on this journey and saying, how could we make it different? and i love the fact that it is african americans that are all over 30, right? they're of a certain age so some have been married. some of them have kids. at that point of your life you kind of know what you want and so it actually kind of helps to focus the attention on that other person in a different way. these are very intentional people. it doesn't mean there's not a lot of drama because i remember when i first pitched this show to miss oprah winfrey and she said, listen, i love the idea of a dating show, but, will, don't have no mess on my network and i said, lady o., i got you. that's a lie, michael, i did not call her lady o., i said, yes, ma'am. i did not say that. >> i kind of figured. you know -- >> so it's not any mess but it is a little messy, go ahead. >> i know you also have five years since your big hit "girls trip" came out. we got to ask, what is happening with a sequel, because i'm sure the ladies could use a little

post-pandemic trip. what's up? >> can't we all use a post-pandemic trip, my friend? i think that the time is actually right and this is something that i will tell you and break right now on "gma," the "girls trip 2" sequel, we are under way. we are absolutely in the stages, the ladies are in, i just talked to the director. we are under way with "girls trip 2" and now it's just about what kind of trip do we take, right? post-pandemic with all our favorite crazy ladies, what do we do with them? that's what we got to figure out. i'm open to suggestions on that too. ask george's daughter. that's what i want. she is my new creative muse. i think she has some good ideas. have her people call my people. we'll set up a meeting. >> all right, and we know you're so busy, man, you have so much other stuff coming up, i'm sure, and we ran out of time. we ran out of time. could talk to you all day but we just want people to know that you are hosting the oscars -- i

mean producing the oscars, so proud of you, will. >> producing, yes. thank you, michael. >> couldn't be a better guy to do it. everyone at home, see "ready to love" fridays on own and the 94th oscars will air sunday, march 27th, right here on abc, now, back to the man who can make the decision on who's going to host, george, over here. we're going to switch gears to the crisis with russia over ukraine. secretary of state antony blinken just met with the russian foreign minister and he joins us live. mr. secretary, thank you for joining us. i know you said there were no breakthroughs -- >> good morning, george. >> i know you said there were no breakthroughs this morning. what did you achieve specifically? >> george, we didn't anticipate there would be any breakthroughs but what we were doing was testing whether there's still a path forward for diplomacy for dialogue to resolve a crisis that russia has created by massing 100,000 forces on ukraine's border and threatening to renew its aggression against ukraine. and so in the last couple of weeks we've been engaged in intense diplomacy including conversations with russia,

directly with the united states at nato, at the organization for security and cooperation in europe, among allies and partners and based on that, president biden asked me to meet today with my russian counterpart, foreign minister lavrov, to see if there is a path forward for diplomacy and dialogue to resolve this potential crisis and to see where we were, and that's exactly what we did today. we had an opportunity to look at where we can go next in this, and i think we at least have some opportunity to continue to work to resolve this diplomatically. >> bottom line, are we closer or further away from war? >> you have to ask president putin. it's ultimately going to be president putin who decides what russia will do. here's where we are. based on what we've heard in the

last couple of weeks, we will put in writing both some deep concerns that we and other allies and partners have about russia's actions, not just with regard to ukraine but more broadly when it comes to things that it does to threaten security, we'll address some of the concerns that russia has raised with us, and we'll put some ideas on the table for how we might actually strengthen each other's sense of security going forward and then based on that and based on russia's response, we anticipate that we'll get together again across the table and see if we continue to advance this through diplomacy. but, george, at the same time that we're doing that, we're also very conscious that russia continues to have these forces on ukraine's border. continues to strengthen them, it continues to take steps that are escalatory, not de-escalatory and we will continue to do what we've been doing, which is building a strong, united response from allies and

partners to any renewed russian aggression. it's very clear, and i made that clear again today to minister lavrov, that any renewed aggression will face massive consequences and coming from us, from europe and other allies and partners and so two paths ahead, one is through diplomacy and dialogue and the other is russian aggression that will have serious consequences. >> even if it's, to use president biden's words, a minor incursion into ukraine? >> we've been very clear with russia that any russian forces going into ukraine constitute an invasion that will be receiving a very swift, united and severe response. at the same time, based on history, we're acutely of aware of other things that russia does, short of actually sending uniforms into another country to try to destabilize it, topple its government, hybrid actions, cyberattacks, et cetera, i made

equally clear to minister lavrov that we will respond to those too in a swift, severe and united way, but that is proportionate to what russia does. >> we only have about 15 seconds left. is this going to take a summit between the president and president putin to solve? >> as you know right here in geneva they met some months ago. they've talked on the phone since then and they've been on video conferences. if it proves productive, useful to try to resolve things through direct conversation between the presidents, that's certainly something we're prepared to do. right now, the plan is to take stock of where we are next week after we share some ideas with russia. >> secretary blinken, thank you very much. >> thank you, george. ank you very much.

to watch it kind of grow and grow and grow. you know, we made most of this movie during the pandemic and i don't think it's an accident that a movie about an intergenerational family all under one roof since we've all been under one roof together is resonating so much with audiences. >> since you were all under one roof, welcome back, lin. you tested out some of the songs on your kids. what was their first impression? >> yeah, it's funny. the "we don't talk about bruno" phase happened in may of 2020 which is when i was writing it and they were listening to me singing it. we were in lockdown with my in-laws and my father-in-law who never chimes in about my work was like i can't stop singing that one bruno tune that i keep hearing coming from your room. that should have been the first tip-off but my son sebastian came home from second grade the other day and he said, daddy, everyone is singing it. [ laughter ]

>> that's a great sign. that is a great sign. you're a busy man. this is not your only new project that you have coming out. your directorial debut "tick, tick, boom" is getting rave reviews, getting oscar buzz, an adaptation of an off-broadway play. it's a short story, but it means so much to you, so can you tell us why? >> yeah, absolutely. i'm here talking to you because i saw jonathan larson's work when i was 17 years old. that was his show "rent" was the show that made me feel like i could write a musical someday and so, you know, this movie is really kind of telling an earlier chapter of his story and the incredible andrew garfield is just -- did the most amazing job playing jonathan and i'm just really thrilled that it's resonating with people who are theater makers, who are artists and also just people who have a passion for something. it's just been amazing to see it spread. >> resonating bruno, your son

sebastian really hit the nail on the head with this. everybody is singing it. it is the earworm from the movie. i know you know this. the highest charting song from a disney-animated film in 26 years. did you think that this was going to be this hit that it is? >> no, i'm really surprised, honestly, but i also -- it's been such a joy to watch, you know, to watch families embrace it, to watch people make videos of themselves in dolores cosplay. the fun of writing that song was i got to figure out how all these characters who don't necessarily get solos in the movie sing like finding dolores' voice and then something we do in musical theater which is smashing them all together and letting them sing at the same time so it's been amazing to watch this, you know, watch this ensemble song really resonate with families. >> we're talking so much about bruno. so let's actually talk to him.

joining us is the man himself. >> yes. >> john leguizamo, the voice of bruno. john, good morning. how are you doing? >> good morning. what's up? so good to see y'all. you know, i tried to be there in person. i wanted to be there. i drove to "gma." i was banging on the door. they wouldn't let me in. i was thrown out, but i tried to get there. >> literally. >> you literally did try to come here. we were wondering what all that noise was outside, the security rushed to the door. it was you. there you go. >> i wanted to be with you. i wanted to be in person with you. >> we wish you both could be here in person with us. we did speak to you back in november, john, before the movie came out and since then the soundtrack has become a smash. it has literally surpassed adele to hit number one. how does this feel to you? >> oh, my god, it is such an incredible feeling. it's almost like falling in love. you know, it's like almost, but close, you know, like you feel that rush, you feel that -- you feel good about yourself. everything that happens to you

is like being in heaven, i don't know. it's a great feeling. >> we can see it on your face. lin, i know you wrote this part for john. what was it about him that you were trying to capture? >> oh, i've been -- i wanted to work -- john has been my hero since i was taping his one-man off-broadway shows off hbo and memorizing his monologues, so his voice i have very firmly in my head and it was really fun sort of texting with him as i was writing stuff and, you know, i remember when he has like a little kind of rap patter section in the last song and i texted him, it's coming. your rap solo is coming. he just totally delivered. >> you're not the only one who taped the hbo specials, lin. john, why do you think everybody is so connected to bruno? there is just something about that character that people have fallen in love with. >> yeah, i think the character that we created with lin and jared and byron, the directors of the piece, he's a vulnerable

man. he is a sensitive man and i'm so glad that people are connecting with that. you know, the pandemic obviously made us all feel like a little awkward, a little odd, a little socially awkward and this guy embodies that, you know. he's, like, rejected because he says what he really thinks, and he's had to pay the price, but he's selfless. he is a selfless man and we all admire that. i've been working on that my whole life to be that kind of guy and i'm in therapy, but i'm also close to bruno. >> bruno is a free man now as well so, guys, what do you think? will we be getting an "encanto" sequel? >> i don't know. i mean, i'm thrilled that it's resonating and there is, obviously because there's so many characters, there's a lot of stories we could tell inside that house so, you know, that's -- ask the good folks at disney. [ laughter ] >> we have a little in. we'll sneak a little question in there about that. the movie is about magical powers within so, lin, if john

had magical powers, what do you think they'd be? >> oh, shape shifter, no question. he's had the camillo powers and i've seen him play all the members of one family in a one-man show. he's already got that power. >> that is the truth. i've seen that show "freak." one of my favorite shows i've ever seen on broadway. what powers would lin have? >> well, lin is like gershwin, cole porter and jay-z all together, you know. but i think his power -- i think his power would be like creating music that cures the ills of the world. i think that he already kind of possesses it. >> you two are two of the most talented people on the planet and also two of the nicest and two of our favorite here at success of "encanto." you both deserve it. >> thank you so much. >> thanks, everybody. >> i was waiting for the thank you. thank you, guys.

a quick break and walk into a walk-in freezer in order to cool down. i was absolutely mortified. often the best thing you can do in a tough moment is take a breath. i mean literally take a breath. that will help you battle those nerves. >> reporter: to asking the right questions. >> one of the most effective questions i ever asked was a single simple word, the word and. this was the first interview with president biden after the chaotic withdrawal from afghanistan. >> so americans should understand that troops might have to be there beyond august 31st. >> no, americans should understand we'll try to get it done before august 31st. >> but if we don't. >> we'll determine at the time who is left. >> and? >> and if there are american forces -- if there's american citizens left we're going to stay to get them all out. >> watching him, watching his

body language and being patient, i realized that that one word might do the trick. >> reporter: and getting a little out of your comfort zone. >> i don't think viewers will ever see me dance on national ptelevision. >> come on, big daddy. >> that doesn't stop either robin or michael or amy from making a point of asking me if i'm going to dance. >> come on, george. get up here. >> it's one of the things you have to learn to be an effective communicator. you have to be willing to show different sides to yourself depending on who you're talking to and what the occasion is. >> so keep trying, michael. >> i was going to say and now we're going to dance. >> i didn't expect that. that would make it into a masterclass. but i will say to you, watching that, george, and seeing you here every day and the way that you are here, to see the fact that you open up about having every symptom of what we call a panic attack and being vulnerable enough to talk about that was something different. >> that was a crazy day.

it was down in north carolina, super hot day at a racetrack, but it wasn't just that. it was hot and interviewing a president is pretty big deal, it was a while ago, i was nervous and i just was in complete -- remember the movie "broadcast news," albert brooks, it was like that. complete flop sweat but i've had to say president bush was so gracious about it. took that quick break. >> he noticed. >> yeah, he could tell. everybody could tell. [ laughter ] so i took that break and literally there was a freezer on site. went and sat there for a second and came out and finished the interview. >> i love that you say you can use these interview skills in the real world, at work, not just -- it's not just for doing television. >> oh, that's -- and that's the idea of these masterclasses which i had not been acquainted with before i started working on this and so much fun to work with all of them but, sure, think -- you know from interviewing as well, the most important skill we have is listening and being -- and that's key to every kind of communication in every facet of life.
