>> building a better bay area, moving forward, finding solutions, this is abc 7 news. >> a wind fueled fire is forcing mandatory effect rations. the colorado wildfire and monterey county propping the closure of highway one near big sur. any have flashbacks of multiple fires hitting the area two years ago. morning. this is saturday january to a second. this is abc seven at 5 a.m.. who live, and wherever you stream. thank you for joining us this morning. officials are warning about power outages because of the strong winds. this map shows the current outages. there are several pockets in oakland and berkeley areas in

the east bay. they are without power right now. these outages are protected -- affecting thousands of customers. they remind people that if you see down power lines, stay away and call emergency crews. we are tracking these conditions right now. there a lot of people in oakland. they cannot sleep because the winds are so loud. they are cranking up, and the wind advisory will take us through the next few hours. we have stronger winds, and in the north bay, that will be with us until about 11:00. that is highlighted in the orange, and it will have gus anywhere from 50 to 60 miles per hour. it will take down power lines to make things difficult. on mount diablo, 65 miles an hour. 42 mile-per-hour wind gusts, as well as north bay.

hundred 30 acres have burned in the colorado canyon. that is north of the bixby bridge. near highway one. abc 7 news reporter lisa paying as the latest on the fire. >> the colorado fire is fueled by high winds. it is intensifying by the hour. it issued evacuation orders on the big sur coast. flames have now reached a high rate. it started burning, and so far it has been ingram bell. several minutes go, we spoke to a supervisor who said that in 2020, approximately 20% of the population had to evacuate. fires to the region, and we have flashbacks. >> we are working to get out of the area, and we know that fires are predictable. many of the roads leading up to highway one are narrow.

three lines. we want everyone to be safe, and if you're your fire, and you vaccination orders, we have hope that you are all yours. >> there was an evacuation order west of the colorado code private one. evacuation orders are mandatory. >> abc 7 news. >> the red cross has opened a shelter for residents under the mandatory evacuation. it is in the middle school. the spca will have pet supplies at the shelter. we will come back to the wind event in just a moment. in the meantime, a mother of a man shot and killed in oakland is calling for a and gun violence. the suspect went and shot a firefighter. and abc news reporter has new details. >> i'm still in shock. i faith in god. >> denise carter was wiping

tears away as she mourned the loss of her son. going to his mother, he had just finished things up and went see his cousin. that was when a man came up and shot him multiple times. >> they were happy, and they got along with everyone. use a good guy. the gunman continued walking down the street towards west oakland. the firefighter, in an unmarked car, saw the gunman and went to grab his colleague who was outside, taking out trash. the gunman fired four rounds into the car is a try to drive to safety. no firefighters were injured, but the firefighters showed damage the car. >> we're just not sure why he targeted them. they did not confront him. >> suspected not know the firefighter's bid was a senseless act of violence. they say he was walking down the street saying he was going to shoot someone. he had been convicted of manslaughter in the 90's.

the president of the oakland firefighters union said that the violence is just another obstacle that firefighters deal with. it is not or the coronavirus. they are routinely dealing with violence at placer streets. they said they arrested the suspect. this shooter had an ankle brace on. they face charges of first-degree homicide. carter once gun violence to stop now. >> we have people killing our people. stop the violence. >> in oakland, ryan curry, abc 7 news. >> oakland police are investigating another shooting that happened just on the street from that homicide. a 45 euros woman was found shot inside of an rv yesterday. it was parked next to a homeless camp on 13th street, near the parkway. she was taken to hospital with a head wound. she is stable.

police believe the woman was shot on thursday night, but they didn't learn about until yesterday when residents alerted them. starting today, 48 police officers will be reassigned to oakland following a surge in crime. it comes on the heel of one of the worst years of crime in a decade. oakland police say that in 2021, there was an uptick in violent crime, robbery, and property crimes. councilmember say there's been a backlog of colson east oakland in particular. people who live there are understandably quite worried. >> residents will say that we just don't feel safe. we don't feel it will voice. we don't feel like the department really cares about the people in east oakland. >> we are building trust among communities of colors. it is part of the strategy. the captain says he encourages officers to make it part of their day by reaching out lease -- by doing outreach to get to know people in the committee. >> to build a better bay area in

that pandemic, education is a key topic we are focused on. omicron searches have various surges working to balance school with health concerns. the teachers union in oakland says that a strike is possible, but in their dispute with the school district over safety protocols, the district has agreed to three main demands for on-site testing, supply of kennedy five mass, and a plan to address staffing levels. unit officials in the district refuses to put the agreement in writing, so the two sites are still negotiating. union is trying to iron out testing site rules, saying the hours of operation are not practical. >> they may not have a vehicle to access that. when they close at 4:00, many families are still working at six. many teachers are still working. >> a strike vote could happen as early as monday. district officials refused to comment, but on thursday, they

>> stanford university is being named in a round that policy following the january 2020 death of a sophomore student. 19-year-old died of an active dental -- accidental fentanyl overdose. the family told us that this was the last resort for justice. >> this year marks the second anniversary for the family. in january, 2020 -- 20-year-old frat house brother died on campus. it was from an overdose after taking her except pills made a fat no. >> on janie reed 15th, there was a clear sign of opioid

overdoses. they called 911, and there was no follow-up in the 36 hours leading up to his death on janie reed 17th. x's family filed a wrongful death lawsuit, naming the university, and inactive fraternity, and others. this was a last resort for the family. california statute of liver -- limitations is two years. >> they knew they were going to get to a point where they will not be compelled by any means to do anything. this was our last option. >> a difficult decision, considering they have dedicated nearly three decades to stanford. both parents are longtime employees. and between 18 graduate. >> anything that challenges the emotional toll that it takes to see any institution that you have invested so much time and turn its back when you pray >> the lawsuit says that stanford failed to follow its own policies to protections. the university ignored local warnings about counterfeit percocet pills made of fentanyl, and more. >> stanford published a response saying that we have great family and those affected by the death.

they added that the university disagrees with many of the allegations in the complaint, and it will defend itself against the lawsuit. >> it failed to follow its own policies, it failed to do what was right, and it could be any institution that does not matter. what hurts is that this is a stanford family. >> the lawsuit also names it childhood friend who sold the drugs. they say they were room is the time. >> the compromise of criminal investigation for they conceal evidence. they've gone on to live their lives without any accountability. they're going to graduate with degrees. he doesn't get to graduate. >> in the south bay, abc 7 news. >> tonight, the east bay community hold an event to honor one of their owns. it was pushed into the path of a new york subway train let's begin. last week, family, friends, and local leaders gathered to hold a vigil in honor of michelle go. she called in your city home for more than a decade, but she a bay area native. she was raised in fremont.

winds in the hills. the north and east bay hills. after sunrise, about 730, 8:00, we will begin to see winds ease up a bit. we will still have a lot of wind to contend with throughout the morning. it will be in the afternoon when things really begin to settle down. here's a look at the doppler seven. we are putting wind warnings in the north bay. at 11:00, the wind advisory is elsewhere. base color, and you can see, it encompasses much of the bay area, except for the santa clara region. definitely conditions have been getting stronger overnight. we just had a reading of over 55 miles per hour. take a look at mount diablo. 60 miles an hour. north and northeast winds. entities are dry when. more wins, temperatures are in the 60's. right above half moon bay. we are 30 miles per hour. it is in the north bay. 20 miles an hour. with all of that mixed

atmosphere, it is 60 in san leander, and 63 in alameda. berkeley is at 60 as well with upper 60's in san francisco. 51 in los gatos, and with all of that, we'll be looking at the surface winds to continue to be a little bit more breezy. go through the 9:00 hour. by the afternoon, it will begin to feel a little palmer out there, for sure. the wind advisory will have expired by about 7:00 this morning, and the wind warning in the north bay by about 11:00, but with all that wind, we have temperatures that are way up. 20 to 22 degrees warmer. 50 degrees milder to start out, and san jose. high pressure off the coast, and low pressure to the south. we are getting a tight pressure gradient in between. it allows for gusty winds. with that, air quality is better today with all of that era be mixed, but as we get the sunday, winds will relax and temperatures will come down

again. we will get back into some moderate air quality is high-pressure remains in control. thus doing throughout the afternoon, mild to warm again today, and looking less warm on sunday. the dry pattern will last through the week again. as we look at the next several hours, high clouds. remember, we are still windy to breezy. certainly into the north bay. when you sunshine, and cooler through sunday. then, we'll be looking at dry patterns, but not as warm. continuing throughout the rest of the week. here is a look at saturday. sunday, monday, tuesday, and the storm track continues to state to the north, but by the end of the week, looks like friday, and then into sunday, look at that. even into the next week. as we get into february, we will see a big pattern change. there will be wet weather. highs underneath the breezy conditions, and sunny skies. very mild. above average. we can look at 60's today, from

moving forward, finding solutions. this is abc 7 news. >> can morning. thank you for joining us here. for this half-hour. we are going to start with another look at the weather. his high strong winds that we are tracking. >> this is just from the last hour. 62 miles an hour, and to see five miles an hour. they have been howling all night long. this is just above a thousand feet. at the surface, we have been breezy as well. that is why we have wind advisory. it should be expiring around sunrise. parts of the east bay, the north bay will take us through 11:00. awfully gusty right now, and in parts of the neighborhood, it is towards the oakland hills. it is over 60 miles per hour. look at diablo. 60 miles an hour. 41 miles an hour in the north bay. it is been consistent at 20 miles per hour. and half moon bay, we are at 32 miles per hour. these foothills are 24 miles an

hour. up to 45 miles an hour. temperatures are in the 50's, and they are mild. when sheltered areas, maybe not as mild it otherwise 60 in napa, and in santa rosa, anything from eight to 25 degrees milder with all that wind. moving things around, 8:00, and 40's and 50's. it is still breezy and windy out there. north bay will hold onto the winds from the afternoon, be milder again. sunshine, mid to upper 60's, and then by sunset, the winds of really calm down. our wind advisory is up for the next few hours, and it will still be breezy beyond that. hopefully, you have tied down some of those loose objects, and with the upper elevations getting the worst of it, over 60 miles an hour right now. >> thank you. developing news this morning. aware winter wildfire. north date is forcing mandatory evacuation. at least a hundred 50 acres have burned in colorado.

anthony fauci gave a best and worst case scenario for the next six months. the best case -- covid comes under control. worst, another variant popped up. >> we have to be prepared for. so we hope for the best, we prepare for the worst. >> for now, hospitals are buckling under the crush of patients. >> currently, we are seeing an overwhelming number of patients presenting in the emergency department with covid. covid like symptoms. it is just beyond our to be able to care for these patients. >> meantime, the biden administration says it will appeal if at all judge ruling striking down vaccine mandate for federal workers. the biden that it will buy mass for the federal government. pharmacies and local community health centers will deal with that in the coming days. the government has at home covid test which of start to shift. karina mitchell, abc news, new york. the fda has expanded

eligibility for the antiviral. the fda announced treatment can be used for anyone who tested positive for covid. but they are not hospitalized. mild to moderate symptoms are at high risk for severe illness. patients can get the drug through iv. it was approved back in may 2020. it was originally only authorize for people who were hospitalized with severe covid. in the east bay, an effort to provide the n95 in k 95 masks are not available from school this risk, so one teacher is trying to set things up with generous donations. an abc reporter has that from pernell. >> lunchtime attt high school, and this student group is passing out free n95 and kn95 mask to fellow students who need them. there is even nomadic and --

the oakland hills or the surrounding areas. let's get another check of the or cast with lisa. i know that you are tracking these high winds we are seeing across the bay area. >> you're seeing a lot of strong winds coming in this morning. they have peaked for some of these areas, but as you look at the map, you can see a highlighted area for the hot wind in the morning. through 11:00, you can look at the wind advisory for the rest of the bay area, and except for that, through 7:00 it is our a 6:00, and we have wins. it is already 50 winds -- 50 miles an hour and mount diablo. in the east foothills, it is 20 miles per hour. straight out of the north, it is rain, and relative humidity to lower levels as the atmosphere continues to bring a dryer air to the surface. even with our recent rains, we are watching the numbers drop here to 26% in the oakland hills create 29% in the east foothills, and only 19% moisture
