fire because it started in the palo colorado canyon north of the bixby bridge last night according to the latest update from cal fire that fire has burned 1,050 acres and is now 20% contained and as crews continue to make progress. now the question is should we prepare for more wildfires in the winter abc 7 news reporter loose peña spoke to climate experts about what we should expect and joins us live in the newsroom hilu's hey dion to colorado fires an example of california's year-round fire climate cal fire making a distinction that places like monterey county where in some areas is historically humid can now experience wildfires even in the winter. as it continues to burn. to fire is giving this wildfire policy experts inside into wants to come it's extremely unusual. we had an unusual combination of a long stretch of dry weather in january combined with an offshore wind event. that was pretty substantial. michael warren is a director of

the climate and policy program at sanford university from now on is this what's gonna happen that we should expect for wildfires like this one in january, i think. it's more likely we're gonna see more of them right in the old days. this would have been an incredibly unusual event. maybe a once in a 50-year event, but these days it's going to be more common and we're gonna see it once every couple years california's need to be aware of the weather in a different way than they used to be. you know, the the risk is is real now instead of categorizing the summer months as the beginning of fire season. cal fire is now preparing for a fire year 10 15 years ago. to call it the california fire season we might get fires say in july that would last through maybe september october. so it was just a few months now our fires are extending all the way through december and then

into january as california units gear up for the rest of the year. they're also noticing the california coastal regions are no longer off limits for wildfires the humidity these areas normally have can be expected a scene. colorado fire there should be that heavy marine coastal fog influence that usually brings the humidity levels down or up overnight that didn't happen last night. the humidity levels did not recover and it stayed very dry. michael warren believes a fire prevention strategies will be key moving forward. we need to allow some fires to burn when it's safe to do. so when the weather conditions aren't extreme so that we essentially the time and place of battle as opposed to letting nature choose. califiers now urging the public to stay to stay vigilant for wildfires throughout the year. and not only in the summer in the newsroom loose peña abc 7

across the bay area. overnight downing dozens of trees and knocking out power to thousands abc 7 news reporter cornell bernard shows us some of the damage. oh. how sweet's car smashed awakening for lonifayola saturday when strong winds took down this giant spruce tree on a silimar drive in the oakland hills. so around 4 am we heard a giant bang and saw a really bright flash of white light the tree knocked these power lines down leaving neighbors in the dark abc 7 assistant news director josh hubbard spoke live from his house on 27 mornings as the chaos unfolded here. this is an open firefighter right in front of my house. i'm on the second floor of my house on the other side of the window that i'm looking out. there's just a power line. just dangling removing the tree could take days not far away. this tuple tree was blocking colton boulevard. this is gonna take you know,

lion dance troupe performed ceremony. they haven't been able to do for a while today. what we're gonna do is a traditional eye dot and ceremony where we bring the lion and this year. we have a dragon that we're gonna bring the life. the troop has been performing in san francisco's chinese new year year parade every year since 1988. after covid canceled last year's parade. they're now roaring back to life this year. parade is a goal. i had the honor of waking up one lion. the dragon also also also a significance. it's named after jasper rue the little boy killed by gunfire on 880 in oakland this past november his mother and father dotted the eyes of the jasper dragon as community members burned incense and paid their respects. founder of the group anthony shoe says lion dancing and these traditions run in his blood. i always wanted to do without the little kid and even though i'm 60, i still perform and

francisco, oakland 51 43 at mountain view, san jose 47-45 at santa clara and at half moon bay lovely view from the exploratorium camera looking back at the cityscape in san francisco other temperature readings right now 45 in santa rosa petaluma 43 napa 49 60 in fairfield. that's pretty mild. maybe fairfield didn't actually report at this hour that seems a bit mild for this hour 45 the conquered 42 at livermore and the view from the emeryville camera. looking along the bay bridge. these are our forecast features. we'll see clear skies overnight with the winds continuing to diminish sonny and mild again tomorrow about perhaps a couple of degrees cooler than it was today and this dry pattern. we're in right now dry and mild pattern i should say will continue into the end of next week overnight the forecast animation looks like this. we'll see no clouds just guys, which will allow temperatures to drop of course into the chile range in our inland areas up in the north bay. we'll see lowe's dropping into the upper 30 years that ukiah lakeport santa rosa over in the inland east the east bay

fairfield antioch conquered livermore. flows in the upper 30s down the south bay mainly low 40s 41 in san jose 41 morgan hill and right around the the bay shoreline. we'll see lowe's in the low to man forties high is tomorrow and the south bay under sunny skies 67 at san jose 66 at los gatos, so it'll be quite mild in the south bay and on the peninsula where we'll see mainly mid-60-64 at san mateo and at redwood city on the coast 61 pacifica 63 half moon bay, downtown, san francisco, ohio 62 tomorrow up the north bay 63, petalum. c6 and santa rosa east behind 63 oakland 64 san leandro and the inlet east bay. we'll see highs mainly in the low to mid 60s as well. so pretty mild day now, let's skip ahead with forecast animation starting tomorrow morning. just want to give you a look at where the storm track is right now well to our north and it will remain there for the next several days until about friday late friday. we'll see little frontal system beginning to sweep into the bay area. it may produce some light rain here. it doesn't look like it'll amount to much. so here's the accuweather.

7 day forecast we're talking about sunny mainly sunny and dry days all the way through the forecast period possibly as slight slight chance of a shower on friday or saturday, but otherwise looks like mild to dry all the way through. okay. well i get spencer. thanks. san jose police are investigating a fatal hit-and-run near regional medical center tonight the collision involved a vehicle and a pedestrian on north jackson avenue. the victim was pronounced dead at the hospital investigators say, this is san jose's sixth pedestrian death of 2022 this time last year. there was just one traffic fatality on the streets of san jose so far a total of nine people have died in traffic accidents this year. in fremont tonight a vigil was held in memory of michelle go. she was born in berkeley and grew up in fremont and was pushed in front of a new york city subway train and killed one week ago. group citizens for a better community organized the event at central park pavilion city

better bay area moving forward finding solutions. this is abc 7 news. we are following developments on the dispute over covid safety protocols between the oakland teachers union and the school district the union now tells us they are making progress in discussions with the district they say they expect to have an update tomorrow night and have the issue resolved by monday. the district has agreed to the union's three main demands on-site testing kn95 masks and a plan to address staffing levels even so union officials say the district refuses to put the payment in writing teachers say they will strike if a deal isn't reached. tonight's performance of harry potter and the cursed child at

san francisco's current theater was canceled abruptly because of breakthrough covid cases. the show is expected to resume on january 23rd hundreds of people were turned away from the theater shortly before the curtain was supposed to go up patrons are being asked to contact their ticket seller to exchange their tickets for another performance. in santa clara county today, they began giving out at home antigen covid tests a total of 60,000 tests are being distributed at four drive-through sites reservations were required to pick up the tests. they're available to those who live work or attend the school in the county the county website to book an appointment show slots at marshall cottle park are full through next weekend. as of this morning, we do not have any more appointments available are for the duration of this limited engagement, which is going to end next weekend. the county is trying to make sure people in what they call at-risk communities have access

to the tests for tests per person are being handed out. well, it is hard to believe but it's been two years since the first case of covid was detected in the us abc 7 news spoke to people across the country whose loved ones died of covid and are now taking action to honor them. over 800,000 people have died from the virus in the country tara in arizona lost her dad charles. she's just grate. to showed if i volunteered at a vaccine site, you know, i cried while i was vaccinating like seniors because i was like, oh my god, i wish my dad was here. hmm to her her dad mark had passed away from covid out of pain and grief.

memorial day. well hundreds of pro-life supporters joined walk for life west coast at its 18th annual rally in march in san francisco today. e hi. oh, i love you. as you can see there was a strong police presence as they marched from civic center down market street to the embarcadero before the march the pro-life group gathered at civic center plaza on the anniversary of roe v wade the supreme court decision that legalized abortion almost 50 years ago. they heard testimonials from people involved with abortion and the negative effect. it had on their lives this year the number of marchers rebounded after the pandemic. reduce the crowd to just 3,000 last year. now the same time governor gavin newsom took part in a virtual rally organized by planned parenthood affiliates of california commemorating the 49th anniversary of the supreme court's roe v. wade decision establishing a national right to abortion. today, california stands as a
