we will get to the top stories. let's get a look at the weather. a lot of people waking up happy. lisa: we have tamped down the wind. it is cold. highlight the temperatures much colder than we work yesterday with all of that wind. live doppler 7 showing a big dome of high-pressure over the bay area and california. we are high and dry. 46 in berkeley. closer to the bay, it is 50 in san francisco. 50's down toward san jose and santa rosa. we are anywhere from 24 to 28 degrees cooler this morning without the wind and clear sky. emeryville, air quality will be moderate as high pressure keeps a lid on things. plenty of sun. temperatures climbing through

ryan: for many fans it was a welcome sight and city officials say it is exactly what the city needs. >> there is nothing like sports to bring people together, especially at this time when we have had a rough couple of years. us to come together like this provides a lot of hope. liz: now to the latest on the rare winter wildfire burning north of big sur. it has been called the colorado fire because it started in the canyon north of the bixby bridge. the fire has burned 1050 acres and it is now 20% contained. and as crews continue to make progress, should we prepare for more wildfires in the winter. our reporter spoke to a climate expert about what we should expect. >> the colorado fire giving this expert insights into what is to come. >> it is extremely unusual.

we had a long stretch of dry weather combined with a wind event that was substantial. luz: he is the director of the climate and policy program at stanford university. >> will we should expect for wildfires like this one in january? >> i think it is more likely we will see more of them. in the old days, this would have been an incredibly unusual event, once in a 50 year event. but these days it is going to be more common and we are going to see it once every couple of years. californians need to be aware of the weather in a different way than they used to be. the risk is real now. luz: instead of categorizing summer months as the beginning of fire season, calfire preparing for a fire year. >> we used to call it the

california fire season where we might get fires in july that would last through september, october, just a few months. now the fires are extending all the way through december and into january. luz: as units gear up for the rest of the year, they are noticing california coastal regions no longer off-limits for wildfires. the hum have -- >> there should be the heavy coastal marine fog influence that brings the humidity levels up overnight, that didn't happen last night. the humidity levels did not recover and it stayed very dry. luz: he believes fire prevention strategies will be keep moving forward. >> we need to allow some fires to burn when it is safe to do so when weather conditions aren't extreme so we essentially pick the time and place of battle as opposed to letting nature

choose. luz: calfire urging the public to say vigilant for fires throughout the year and not only in the summer. liz: the high winds because chaos, downing trees and knocking out power to thousands. we are looking at the pg&e power outage map, most are still in the east bay and a few in the north bay but thankfully many people have gotten power turned back on since yesterday morning. our reporter shows of some of the damage. >> oh, >> strong winds took down this spruce tree. >> it was around 4:00 a.m. and we heard a giant bang and saw a bright flash of white light. >> it not the power lines down

liz: san jose police investigating a hit and run. it was on north jackson avenue. the victim died at the hospital. investigators say this is san jose's six pedestrian death -- sixth pedestrian year. nine people have died in accidents in 2022. in fremont, a vigil was held for michelle go. last weekend she was pushed in front of a new york city subway train and was killed. the group citizens for a better community organize the event. city leaders such as the mayor, urged the community to

stop the hate. a signed photo poster photo pose to michelle's friends to give to the family. her suspected killer, marshall simon, arrested shortly after the incident. hundreds of antiabortion advocates joined at the 18th rally and march in san francisco. >>[chanting] liz: there was a strong police presence. the group gathered at civic center plaza on the anniversary of roe v. wade. they heard testimonials from people involved with abortion and the negative effect it had on their lives. the number of mergers rebounded after the pandemic reduced it to 3000 last year. san francisco's chinese new year parade is back and preparations in full swing.

spark and the offshore winds can carry that and we are certainly in a situation now that is unlike anything we've seen with just the wind shifts and dry spells that we have had for like every other month. hopefully february will usher in wet or conditions -- wetter conditions. our beach hazard statement until monday, you can see three to six feet and this brings the risk of waves and strong rip currents down through monterey. certainly use caution if you're headed to the beach. in the south bay, look at the highs from santa clara and san jose, we should be around 60 degrees. 67 in san jose. looking at temperatures a few degrees cooler. by wednesday and thursday, should c70 -- you should see a
