department is urging americans not to travel to the region warning military action by russia could come at any time. this morning the u.s. embassy in ukraine on high alert. the state department ordering diplomats' families to leave the region while authorizing nonessential staffers to depart, the latest sign that american officials believe russia could soon invade ukraine. secretary of state antony blinken reaffirming u.s. support for the ukrainian government. >> if a single russian troop goes into ukraine, that would trigger a shift and severe response from us and europe. >> reporter: abc news confirming the biden administration is now considering sending more troops to the region. it would be on top of severe financial and trade sanctions against russia, including the possible restriction of russia's access to u.s. technology in

particular parts that enable computer and smartphone technology. making it more difficult for every day russians to get consumer electronics. in california this weekend the u.s. military shipping out additional supplies to ukraine following the administration's approval of $200 million in defensive security assistance. this comes as russia has amassed at least 100,000 troops at the border of ukraine prompting bipartisan support. >> let's make sure we are pushing back right now with stiff sanctions. >> the very sort of a sanctions, the type we use to bring iran to the table is the type we should hold out as a deterrent to prevent putin from taking the last step of invading ukraine. >> reporter: the u.s. says there would be serious consequences after a new british report accused russia of plotting to install a russian leader in ukraine. russia is dismissing the comments as disinformation. andrew?

>> em, thank you. now to the days' long siege at a prison where thousand of suspected isis members are being held. isis fighters attacking the facility in syria last thursday in an attempt to free isis deta detainees. a coalition said the attack has been contained after the u.s. called in air strikes to help an american-backed militia regain control. some militants are reportedly using detained children as human shields. it is not clear how many prisoners were able to escape. now to pandemic and chinese officials confirming covid-19 cases in the run-up to the winter olympics. the games start in under two weeks. officials say there's been at least 72 covid infections among olympic personnel, but none among athletes. in california millions of tests are waiting to move out of a warehouse that's been hit with covid cases and supply chain issues. dr. anthony fauci says most states should be over the omicron peak by mid february. >> things are looking good.

we don't want to get overconfident. they look like they're going in the right direction. >> fauci's comments came as thousands of anti-vaccine mandate protesters gathered on washington's mall. in brussels protests turned violent. there was an estimated 150,000 people taking to the street in brussels. now to the rising cases of violence against police officers. overnight another officer was shot. this time in the nation's capital. it comes after two other officers were killed over the weekend. now several states are stepping up efforts to go after illegal guns. overnight an ambush attack on police leading to a dangerous standoff in washington, d.c. at least one officer rushed to the hospital after an armed suspect opened fire before barricading himself in a house. >> he started firing shots at the officers.

>> reporter: this after a shooting in houston, texas, that left corporal charles galloway dead. another shooting in new york city killed rookie officer rivera. >> he tried to take care of everybody in the street. everybody. he was 22 years old. >> reporter: rivera's mother wracked with grief as the nypd escorted her son's body to the funeral home in manhattan. rivera one of at least 18 police officers killed in the line of duty since january 1st. >> two mos shot. cop shot. >> reporter: experts say the gun used to kill rivera was a glock with a high capacity magazine, allegedly reported stolen in baltimore in 2017. >> that gun, no other reason to have one than to commit a crime. >> reporter: local officials are

demanding the federal government take action to stem the illegal firearms going between states. >> if we don't coordinate to go after those gun dealers that are supplying the large cities in america, such as new york, we're losing the battle and the federal government must step in and play a role. >> reporter: in new york governor kathy hochul says states are coming together to launch a new task force to curb gun violence. the group is comprised of more than 50 agencies across nine states, set to meet later this week. >> we have to do more to fight the scourge of illegal guns on our streets. we need washington teaming up with locals to get it done. >> reporter: governor hoke plans to work with others to stop the

stem of gun violence. nypd says they're bringing back a plain clothes anti-gun task force. eight years ago today there was a shooting at a high school in michigan. now students return and the principal offered up a youtube video to lend support. >> stuntds, we love you. we can't wait to see you monday. it's a great day to be a wildcat. we're oxford strong. >> four students were killed. a fellow student and his parents all face charges. former attorney general william barr has spoken with the house committee investigating the attack on the capital. the chairman of the january 6th panel confirmed the conversations with barr without revealing what was discussed. barr was a close ally of former president trump, but resigned weeks before trump left office after rejecting claims of widespread voter fraud. crews are making progress against a winter wildfire on the california central coast. fire in the big sur area burned

back now with a violent end to a police chase in delaware. three people were hurt when a pickup truck slammed into a work van. the driver of the pickup had been trying to get away from officers. no details have been released on what prompted the chase. the family of a connecticut college student is demanding an independent investigation after she was found dead in her apartment after meeting up with a man she met on a dating app. they held a rally yesterday on what would have been lauren smith-fields 24th birthday. accusing bridgeport police of mishandling the investigation. officers say an older white man who called 911 said he met

to seize the vessel if it entered u.s. waters because of unpaid fuel bills. passengers onboard finding themselves trapped in bimny in the bahamas before being ferried back to ft. lauderdale on sunday. >> we were all very scared. we didn't know what was going to happen. until this morning, we did not know if we were going to get off the ship. >> reporter: crystal symphony is owned by crystal cruises. the ship treading on hot waters after a fuel company filed a complaint in court, claiming crystal cruises and one of its sister lines owes them more than $4.5 million in fuel bills. >> we started reading on our phones about news, "usa today," "wall street journal," about what was happening with the parent company, and then of course the petroleum company. >> reporter: crystal cruises struggling to stay afloat after recently announcing it expects to run out of money by the end of the month. the company says it will provide refunds to passengers, adding, quote, this was an extremely
