44 in oakland, 41 in san jose. the winter jacket is needed as you step out the door. here is the exploratorium camera you can see that cloud cover right now with partly sunny skies first thing this morning but sunshine moves and quickly. it does turn breezy in our hills but otherwise, temperatures in the upper 50's to mid 60's. reggie: knew this morning, pfizer says it has a minister the first doses of its omicron based vaccine in a clinical trial. the shot will be tested as a booster shot for already vaccinated patients. pfizer has said the trials are being done as a precaution in case a number conspecifics vaccine becomes necessary in the future. they expect to have initial findings later this year. moderna is expected to start

their clinical trials in the coming days. in other covid headlines, a change in some seneca -- santa cruz county schools treating the entire student body as if they were exposed to new covid cases, as a way to cut down on individual exposure notices. walgreens says people can expect to find and 95 masks in their stores on friday and those three tests offered by the government will ship this week. >> this morning we are learning more about a proposed bill that could require all california school children to get the covid-19 vaccine. amy hollyfield is joining us live with more on the bill and what parents think about it. amy: it is called the keep schools open and safe act and the mission is to require all kids who come to school to have the covid vaccine in this bill would take away the personal belief exemption. the only way to skip the shot would be a medical exemption.

we talked to parents on both sides of the issue. >> we all know that with omicron going on, i just think we need a choice. >> 200 years ago, we didn't have life-saving vaccines and children died of what are now entirely preventable diseases, so i'm all for eradicating these things from circulation by vaccinating everyone. amy: there are some republican lawmakers who have already come out against this bill, saying it undermines parents rights. the bills being proposed by scott weiner of san francisco and richard pan of sacramento. they also sponsored the bill that would allow teenagers to get vaccinated without parent permission. if this passes, it would go into effect in 2023. reggie: a pioneering bay area brewery is calling it quits after three decades in business. the economy is something we are focused on, and the owners of

the brewing company say rising rent in the pandemic have left them no choice. cornell barnard spoke with some loyal customers who are now saying a final goodbye. >> to the brewing company. cornell: friends are raising a final glass to one of their favorite places ever. >> we've been coming here for years. >> this place is just the best. it is very sad. cornell: it is where pictures of loyal customers hang on the wall. after serving thousands of brews for three decades, they are closing their doors for good. >> ■it is kind of breaking my heart. we've been coming here for a very long time. family, friends. it has just been home. >> we have to pack it up and move it out. cornell: the founders says rising rent, staffing shortages brought on by covid-19 made it tough to stay open.

kumasi: this morning, a major new ruling from the supreme court on new york, on the polarizing issue of masked mandates in schools. this comes as parents and teachers across the country are asking whether kids should be required to wear them in masks. jobina: a judge struck down new york's mask mandate for all public schools and locations. the new york state education department has told superintendents across the state that schools must continue to follow the mask rule while they appeal. the debate is also playing out in virginia where seven district are suing the new republican governor over his executive order which allows parents to opt their children out of school mask requirements. in southern california, schools and los angeles are now tightening requirements, telling students they must wear a non-cloth mask with a nose wire at all times, including during sports. >> children are getting covid at

record numbers which means classes and schools are shutting down because of it and spreading it to their parents and grandparents and other family members. jobina: more than 1.1 million children in the u.s. tested positive for covid last week but pediatric hospitals -- pediatric hospitalization fell 30% during the same period. it comes a states report a plateau or decrease in new cases. kumasi: to find the latest news about covid-19, you can head to our website, abc7news.com /coronavirus. reggie: the city council is set to vote on a new law requiring gunowners to buy liability insurance and pay $25 annual fee. the council draft of the ordinance last june, just a month after the bta shooting. if passed, san jose would be the first city in the nation to impose such requirements. the national foundation for gun rights is already threatening a lawsuit. they said the ordinance would violate the constitution and punish citizens who have not committed a crime. >> no good deed goes on

litigated when it comes to gun regulation. we expect there will be lawsuits. that should not deter us. the good news is we've got a great law firm. reggie: the money that comes from the fees would be funneled into programs that work to reduce gun violence. kumasi: firefighters are continuing to make progress against a wildfire that is burning in monterey county. the so-called colorado fire is 40% contained. 700 acres have burned near big sur since friday night. evacuation orders are still in effect for some residents and a section of highway 101 is also closed. drew: we are tracking breezy wind in the hills today, nothing like we experienced last weekend. but we will notice throughout the afternoon, the wind does pick up in the hills. it is not as noticeable for us close to the valley floor but in the north bay we will find the wind gusting to 24 miles per hour. offshore wind does relax later

outside a liquor store at a shopping center. officers received multiple reports yesterday afternoon, gunshots in the parking lot off of delta fair boulevard not far from highway four. they found a man on the ground. witnesses reported seeing a car speeding away from the shooting scene. no arrests have been made and the victim's name was not released. kumasi: oakland police have made an arrest in connection with an assault of an elderly woman in oakland. surveillance cameras caught the woman being shoved to the ground earlier in the month. police have not identify the person they arrested but they say the individual is facing charges of assault and cruelty to an older or dependent adult. the 66-year-old woman told abc 7 news that the arrest makes her feel the community is a bit safer. reggie: wall street has been pretty volatile recently. we will be watching it closely when the markets open in about an hour. it ended up being a positive day for stocks yesterday after a

schools with vaccines, but now there is a question about whether the children are going to have to go to school without getting an exception if they have a personal belief against vaccines. amy hollyfield is live this morning with the details on that. amy: there there there there the proposed that goes further than what the governor has mandated. he mandated schools would need to require kids to have the covid vaccine, but this new bill goes further, it is called the keep schools open and safe act and the mission is to get all kids vaccinated as a requirement to come to school. the governor's mandate allows for personal belief exemptions this bill does not. it is being introduced by scott weiner of san francisco and richard pan of sacramento. the bill would allow for medical exemptions but not personal beliefs. >> it is a gigantic loophole because it allows people for no reason other than their point of view or their politics to not

urged the judge to keep the company on probation. after they told their stories last year, a u.s. district judge said he would consider extending the probation if avril prosecutors asked him to, but their office led by u.s. attorney stephanie heinz, declined saying it was unnecessary. >> shame on them. shame on them. >> they are continuing to kill people. >> woody is on the town council in paradise. he had to rebuild after pg&e's crimes burned his house down. >> if i was on probation, and i have been in my distant past. if i was on probation and violated that probation, i would be locked up. >> while on probation, pg&e pled guilty to a felony for starting the camp fire and to 84 felony counts of involuntary manslaughter. >> the fact that the federal prosecutor will not take the judge's lead and keep these

people on probation, so they are scrutinized, so they cannot kill another person is a slap in the face to me personally and every survivor whose life is different because of pg&e's irresponsible actions. >> the judge says pg&e has gone on a crime spree during probation and will be a menace to california. pg&e is accused of felonies in the 2019 ire which killed four people, leading to new manslaughter charges. instead of extending probation, the u.s. attorney's office wrote at this juncture, it appears the state courts are the proper forum. >> it is going to take years for those to come to a judgment. it did for us. >> who is getting paid off? somebody is getting paid off. >> obviously they need a new prosecutor. >> two of the more than 70,000 people hurt in pg&e disasters. if the judge doesn't keep pg&e

on a leash, they worry they will have more company soon. >> it hurts my heart. >> if nothing changes, the one day left on pg&e's probation will be its last. reggie: we reached out to the justice department and u.s. attorneys office for comment on this story, but they declined. they pointed out in the past there is no legal precedent for extending probation. the judge declined to comment on the story citing judicial ethics rules. kumasi: at&t says it has launched its first multi-gig fiber internet service, making it the fastest internet provider. san francisco is one of the cities getting the superfast neighborhood in -- superfast internet in some neighborhoods. it can reach up to five to get bits per second but the plan is not cheap, starting at $110 a month. at&t says they plan to have the service available to 30 lien customers by 2025 -- 30 million customers by 2025. reggie: leaked video shows a single giant windshield wiper on the front of the new tesla cyber truck.
