its omicron based vaccine in a clinical trial. this will be tested as a booster shot for people who have been vaccinated and as a three dose series for previously unvaccinated people. the trials are being done as a precaution just in case an omicron specific vaccine is necessary in the future. dharna expected to start -- moderna expected to start similar trial soon. reggie: expected to be treating everyone as if they were exposed. mark said free masks -- walmart said free masks will start being available. kumasi: we are learning about a proposed bill that could require all children to get a vaccine.

amy hollyfield is joining us for more. amy: it is called to keep schools open and safe act and its mission is to make sure all kids have the covid vaccine that they are required to have it before they come to school. it goes a little farther than governor newsom's mandate it it eliminates the personal beliefs exemption, the only way to skip the shot would be a medical exemption. we talked to parents on both sides of the issue. >> we all know that with omicron going on that it is evading vaccines. i think we need a choice. >> i think back to 200 years ago when we didn't have life-saving vaccines and children died of what are now entirely preventable diseases. i am all for eradicating these things from circulation by vaccinating everyone.

amy: some republican lawmakers have come out against the bill saying it undermines parents' rights. the bill is being proposed by states representative. they argue this would protect other children in school who they say have rights too. they also sponsored a bill that would allow teenagers to get vaccinated without a parents's permission. reporting live, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. kumasi: a major new ruling from the supreme court of new york on the polarizing issue of masked mandates in schools. jobina: a judge struck down t jj new york mandate for all public schools. she said her administration strongly disagrees with the ruling and the new york state

education department has told superintendents across the state that schools must continue to follow the mask rule while they appeal. the debate over masks in school is playing out in virginia, were seven districts are suing the new republican governor over his executive order which allows parents to opt their children out of school mask requirements. in southern california, schools in los angeles tightening requirements, telling students they must wear a non-cloth mask with a nose wire at all times, including during sporting events. >> children are getting covid at record numbers, which means classes and schools are shutting down because of it and also they are spreading it to their parents and grandparents and other family members. jobina: 1.1 million children tested positive for covid. it all comes as

investigating a shooting outside a liquor store. officers received multiple reports of gunshots in the parking lot not far from highway four. when they got there, they found a man on the ground. witnesses report seeing a car speeding from the scene. no arrest seven made and the victim's name has not been released. kumasi: oakland police a.k.a. -- make an arrest in the assault of an elderly woman. cameras captured her being thrown to the ground. police have not identified the person but said the person is facing charges of assault and cruelty to an elder or dependent adult. the 66-year-old woman told our anchor that the arrest makes her feel the community is a bit safer. a contentious comment caught on a hot microphone. reggie: progress in the fight against the fire in big sur. drew: a live look from the rooftop camera.

getting rid of the personal beliefs exemption. amy: the bill takes the governor's mandate for vaccines in schools one step further. this bill is called the keep schools open and safe act, and the mission is to get all california kids vaccinated against covid as a requirement to come to school and different from the governor's mandate. that allows for a personal belief exemption and this bill does not. it is being introduced by state senators allow for medical exemptions but they say they would not allow kids to skip the shot because of the personal beliefs exemption. >> it is a gigantic loophole, because it allows people for no reason other than their point of view or politics to not have their kid get vaccinated.

lawmakers have spoken out against the bill and they believe it undermines parents' rights and appearance should have a choice. governor newsom has not said whether he supports this bill. if passes, it will go into effect january 2023. reggie: happening today, south bay congressman ro khanna will host a town hall on the pandemic and his efforts of congress to expand access for kn95 masks. it will be joined by the health director to answer questions. the townhall will be streamed on facebook live. kumasi: there have been concerns from some people that getting a covid-19 vaccine could affect fertility. it is catching covid that could impact fertility.

reggie:reggie: today could be the last day of pg&e's criminal --. our reporter has been covering them for years and spoke with some survivors who are are reached. >> they went on federal probation because of this disaster 11 years ago, the gas explosion. a jury convicted pg&e of six federal felonies, including obstructing the investigation. eight people died. she lost three, her teenaged son, husband, and her mother-in-law. you are wearing this decision will cost lives. >> i don't think i'm alone here. >> she's not alone, a whole group of pg&e survivors called on the judge to keep the company on probation after they told their stories last year. the district judge said he would
