motorcycle crash in san jose o 101. this was near the airport just after 1:00 a.m. officials had to close the lanes. and just about 30 minutes ago they reopened. it is not clear what caused of the crash. we'll bring you more information as we get it. kumasi: signs that the omicron surge is a slowing down, several bay area counties are getting ready to relax covid restrictions. amy hollyfield is in the north bay with more. amy: good morning. no word yet on when students can take off their masks while in class, but some schools, like here, are relaxing the rules when it comes to school activities. in san francisco, you can take off your mask starting on tuesday at the gym and in the office as long as everybody is vaccinated and boosted.

sonoma county will allow up to 50 spectators at sporting events and performances. marion county says there will be no limitations for a crowd of 500 or less. school administrators say this is good news for student athletes. >> we know that there are some students who go to school because of sports, that is their driver, so it is important and it is good for the community, to bring the community together. amy: you can go to those high school basketball games again. and doctors say they have no problem with the changes, saying we are approaching a shift from pandemic to endemic because of the high vaccination rates and natural immunity caused by the contagious omicron variant. they agree we have already hit the peak of the omicron search with the case rates and people in the hospital all dropping.

amy hollyfield, abc7. julian: more on the endemic. all first responders will have to prove they have their shots in marion county, by the end of the month. those ineligible for vaccination will have to test weekly. contractors have to be fully vaccinated by april 29, or submit to weekly testing. a booster is not required so far. for oakland public school students, 12 and older, the mandate will be delayed until august. to find the latest news about covid-19, go to our website. kumasi: developing now, a suspect of accused of shooting three police officers has surrendered following a standoff. it started when this man lead investigators on a high-speed chase, then started shooting at police. ktrk

gun battle. officers were hit in the foot, leg and arm, but they are expected to recover. the suspect barricaded himself in an apartment, firing more shots at officers. this all started when the officers responded to a disturbance call and encountered roland --. he has been convicted of several felonies and since 2008 and was wanted for a robbery. >> it shows how dangerous it is for the officers out here and for the general citizens. we have to get intentional on addressing that, everybody, everybody in the criminal justice system. and even the citizens. kumasi: the suspect came out of the apartment last night and surrendered peacefully. he had a gunshot wound in his neck. julian: more information as the president reaffirms to ukraine's president the readiness of the u.s. and its allies if russia

invades. the kremlin has responded to the u.s. regarding demands over ukraine. we have the latest at the live desk with jobina. jobina: the kremlin has responded to a letter sent by president biden, saying it failed to address concerns about ukraine being admitted to the nato military alliance. russia has released a video showing military drills on the baltic sea and tnaks near the eastern ukrainian border. the drills are seen as a sign of final preparations for an invasion. >> all of this activity is what leads to our concern over russian intentions here, which again, as always, remain opaque. jobina: the u.s. has a sunday military -- sent military aid to the region. president biden says that the u.s. and allies will respond decisively if russia invades. the u.s. and announced at un security council will hold an

open meeting on monday aon russia's threatening behavior. julian: oakland unified will release a recommendation for the schools to close permanently. earlier this week, a schoolboard member released a list of 19 schools the district was considering closing. teachers and parents have expressed outrage over the plans, saying the closures are affecting predominantly black schools, but the districts at the list was not finalized and not meant for the public. the board of education will hold a special meeting on monday to discuss final recommendations. it is then scheduled to meet again on february 8 to vote on the proposed school closures. drew: good news in terms of visibility this morning, no fog on the ground. visibility is anywhere from 9-10 miles, so good to go. you need a heavy jacket this morning. we are in the 30's and 40's.

kumasi: san francisco investigators think they are close to breaking a four decade old mystery. there is a $200,000 reward now for any information that leads the doodler the doodler to the arrest of the -- it leads to the arrest of the doodler. this is an age progression of what he might look like now. he targeted gay men. >> he would pick a guy at a bar, he was sketching. he would walk up and say hey, like my doodle? kumasi: san francisco chronicle reporter say they believe they know thede doodler, somebody they brought in years ago but they could not pi anything on him at the timen -- pin anything at the time. we spoke with the sister of a

restrictions. in san francisco, masking will be less strict. julian: two, omicron driven covid cases are dropping in many states, fueling hope that we could be getting over this latest surge. but scientists are watching a sub variant detected in most of the country. three, a russian invasion of ukraine could be imminent. the president says that the u.s. will respond if that does happen. julian: today, oakland unified plans to release a final recommendation of schools to close permanently. the board of education will meet on monday to discuss and it could vote the following week. drew: we are tracking sunshine through the weekend. today, sun and high clouds. another mild day. by sunday it will be a little bit cooler with morning fog that afternoon sunshine. jobina: all lanes back open following a deadly motorcycle crash in san jose.

that happened on southbound 101, near the international airport, just after 1:00 a.m. kumasi: seven, president biden will be visiting pittsburgh today to tout his bipartisan infrastructure law. theopta democrats were invited will not be joining him. julian: a familiar foe will be suiting up for the brooklyn nets tomorrow night and it has a san francisco supervisor upset. kai read irving is barre playing in new york city because he is unvaccinated and it san francisco has a similar vaccination requirement, but it does not apply to visiting players. one supervisore says it should apply to everyone. he says this breeds cynicism over what are clearly double standards. if you are not going to tomorrow night's game, you can want to the nuts and warriors here at

5:30 p.m. kumasi: 49ers and rams will go head-to-head on sunday. i spoke with a ticket expert at stub hub yesterday and he says that 75% of the website's ticket sales for the game are coming from california right now, and more than 40% are from northern california. >> we are on pace to have this be the highest selling non-super bowl game in history. the current average ticket price is about $1200. to put that in perspective, the nfc championship game at levi's was only $674. so demand of the fans, they are super eager to go to another super bowl. kumasi: he says that super bowl ticket prices should break records since the game is in california and we know that one of the teams playing in the super bowl will be from california -- the 49ers.

hurt. we'll bring you the latest as soon as we get it. kumasi: parts of the east coast are bracing for a major winter storm. 35 million americans are said to be impacted. we have the preparations underway for what could be a historic storm. jobina: all eyes are on the east coast ahead of what is expected to be a monster storm. some areas will see several feet of snow, along with hurricane strength winds. boston is bracing for what could be the biggest storm ever for the city. winter storm watches are in place for 35 million people on the coast, something that could complicate the aftermath -- a shortage of snowplow drivers. companies are paying drivers at $300 an hour for them to hit the roads and to clear the snow once the storm passes. >> you need to pay the guys more money, which means you need to make more money. on the backside you have fuel up, insurance up.

it is a combination between money and a combination between where the workforce is. jobina: four inches could fall in north carolina, new jersey and connecticut. they are bracing for 10 inches of snowfall in other areas. presidents are also preparing -- residents are also preparing for flooding. winds could hit up to 70 miles per hour. julian: calfire is predicting the colorado fire burning in monterey county will be fully contained by next wednesday. it has been burning between big sur and carmel for a week. so far, 700 acres have burned, destroying three structures. it started from a pile of burning embers. highway one has reopened. coming up at 7:00 a.m., we are speaking live with a scientist on this unusual january fire activity, whether it could become more common and how climate change plays a role in the drought here.

to watch carefully. kumasi: both pfizer and moderna are working on vaccines to specifically target omicron. there is also ongoing work on the universal coronavirus vaccine, one that targets every variant. that could be several years away. san francisco's mayor says the city is bringing back its mask exemption. it was in place before the omicron surge. starting tuesday, if you are fully vaccinator you can take off your mask at the gym. some gym owners sa they do noty have the staff to check vaccination records. >> it is a step in the right direction to move forward in a mass close environment. and it does provide additional challenges to implement in the short term. kumasi: the mask exemption also applies to offices in the city. julian: two other bay area counties are also relaxing restrictions. amy hollyfield is live for us with the latest. amy: yes, if you want to attend

a basketball game at redwood high school, now you can because they are relaxing rules in marion county. they will not limit how many people can attend sporting events or a performance or an assembly anymore. in sonoma county, they are not going that far, but they will allow up to 50 people to attend a game or another gathering. san francisco is dropping some restrictions. starting on tuesday t to the gym or office without a mask of everybody is vaccinated or boosted. doctors are ok with the changes. >> i think it is time to allow people to have masks optional. i am confident that this is near the end of the pandemic stage of the virus. amy: officials believe the bay area is passed at the peak of the omicron surge.

-- pennsylvania to shore up support for democrats before the midterm elections. he will be talking about his infrastructure plan, which was passed in november. in california, 45 billion dollars will be coming for transportation infrastructure. in pennsylvania, $11 billion for road repairs. despite the money, the president is having a hard time rallying top democrats. the state attorney general but declined his invitation to the event today saying they had scheduling conflicts. there is concern that the president's lower approval ratings could hurt the democrats in the midterms and at some are starting to distance themselves from the president. a big show of support for a mobile vet clinic that had its catalytic converter stolen. the response and what the organization plans to do with a bunch of extra money. julian: capturing the biggest 49ers moments. meet the man behind the camera. before that, the forecast.

julian: the san francisco district attorney is responding to a lawsuit from man who claims the da violated his constitutional rights. he says he was threatened with a glass bottle and beaten with a baseball bat on stockton street by a man and his son. the man was charged in the attack, but the suspect -- but the victim says the suspect got a plea deal with your probation. now he is suing the district attorney. the da's office says that this is not correct. that the victim communicated many times, but for weeks he did not respond to repeated messages from the advocate. kumasi: a mobile vet clinic is

back on the road after somebody stole their catalytic converter. the employees discovered at missing two days ago into the organization uses its vehicle to provide services for families. they reached out a g response. they quickly had the money to pay for the parts and their maintenance employee performed the repairs. >> the story ended up with something really positive and we are very excited to get the vehicle back into the community and get help for that parents who are struggling. kumasi: they raised more than they needed to replace the converter and will use the rest of the money to help those struggling to pay for vaccines for their pets. julian: one of the biggest and brightest attractions at golden gate park will be around for a little bit longer. san francisco parks and recreation has extended the run for entwined, the art installation in peacock menu -- meadow. it's an enchanted forest with

julian: a new study from stanford is focusing on the environmental cost of gas stoves. the concern is the amount of methane they release. the team estimates that a significant fraction of natural gas used by the stoves are released as unburned methane equal to the climate impact of the carbon dioxide released by half a million gasoline powered cars. >> even while you are turning it on and off, when you turn the knob and you can smell the gas, there is gaza being emitted. -- gas being emitted. julian: environmental groups say 50 cities and counties in california are working to phase out gas appliances in new construction. it is estimated more than a third of u.s. households currently cook with gas.
