favorite things are hydrangeas, roses and lilies, flowers you can get at any grocery store right now and what i really love about them is you can get a variety of colors and customize your arrangement and they all have amazing vase life. >> we've got those in front of us now. i'm sorry. we've got those in front of us so our viewers can see and you're going to put us to work, and we're trying our hand at makes these bouquets. how do you get them in tiptop shape? >> so, the first thing you'll want to do is focus on picking out good blooms. one great tip with roses, when you're picking them out, you're going to want to squeeze the base of your bloom, if it's hard, it's fresh, it's going to last ha lot longer. if it's really soft, it's a little bit older and is not going to last quite as long. another great thing to do is use lilies that are closed. that way you can watch them bloom and when picking out hydrangeas, make sure there's no brown spots or any wilting to get started. once you have your blooms and pick the perfect ones you'll start prepping them. for your roses you will take off all your leaves. this is going to keep any

bacteria out of the water and remove your guard petals, they are these coarser, smaller petals. so take those off. you don't need them anymore. same thing for your lilies, go ahead and remove any of the extra leaves. and then hydrangeas are so thirsty. you want to make sure you remove all of their leaves as well. once you've done that. you will be all ready to start building. >> then comes the fun part. the arranging, what is the best way to arrange flowers because i feel like i'm not that great at it. >> so i love to create. a hand tied design. so what you're going to do is you're going to start with one hydrangea, and we're just going to layer in your other blooms. so add in a lily, i like to add my roses in two at a time, so add in a couple of those, and then one more hydrangea, and we're just going to keep layering. so go ahead and add in your next lily. two more of those roses. >> i broke apart and they're showing me.
8:46 am
>> and then so you should have three hydrangeas for this and add in the last one, your last lily and then you're going to add in two more of your roses, and you should have a very nice, well-rounded arrangement. and now what you're going to want to do is you're going to want to take your floral tape, and you're going to want to tie it. this is really going to make sure that when you change your water and taking care of your arrangement it's easy to do so so this floral tape is heat activated by your hand so may not feel sticky but as you pull it around, it's really going to start to stick. >> wow. okay, let's put the petal to the metal. i didn't write this. with the rapid-fire round. first off, a question i always have about flowers. how often should you change the water? >> so this is actually the most important thing, change your water every other day and when you do that make sure you retrim your stems, and you also add a little fresh flower food to your base. >> what can you feed your flowers? anything from your own pantry?
8:47 am
>> yes, so a great diy is actually to add a scoop of sugar to your water. it gives your flowers like a sugar rush and really keeps them nice and perky. so should we put the whole packet of that flower food in the a third of the packet that comes with the flowers. that way you have plenty to last you every time you change the water. >> i think i'm going to leave this one to the professionals. >> i think your flowers look lovely. >> thanks, anna. check out her tips on tiktok at anna the florist. >> coming up here on layering up the lasagna, food, we'll be right back.

annual sun, wine and food festival in connecticut. rocco, good morning. it's great to have you. >> good morning, what's going on, guys? i have a lasagna ready for you. i understand you have one in the studio. >> yeah, we got it right here. and this is a duck lasagna, tell us about why the duck and the ingredients we need to get started. >> well, you know, it's the 18th year for mohican sun. i wanted to do something super special. duck is a special occasion lasagna even in italy where it's pretty common and you make it the same way you'd make any lasagna bolognese. a white sauce that's made with cheese and milk and a red sauce that's made with the meat. i start with the red sauce at the bottom of the pan, do that because i'm using what's called a no boil lasagna and you just layer it like you would any other lasagna, white sauce, red sauce and in this case i'm using myataki mushrooms which are really good mushrooms that are available locally now.
8:52 am
those are most commonly used in chinese and japanese dishes. what is the advantage of using them here in this lasagna? >> you know, like all great ingredients, the advantage is flavor, tastes really, really good and available local which is awesome and they're no longer like this exotic mushroom you have to go far and wide for. i'm just layering it white sauce, red sauce, mushroom, another layer of pasta, you bake it for about 40 minutes. >> talking about those layers, you said that you start with a layer of your red sauce, your ragout at the bottom of the pan. why is that? yes, so i'm usiing -- these are no boil lasagna sheets. if you don't want to go through the trouble of boiling the noodles, you can use these no boil, but they do need moisture on top and on bottom. that's a great way to do it, use the sauces to provide the moisture that they need.
