building a better bay area moving forward finding solutions. this is abc 7 news. a woman taking out the trash in front of her home was hit and killed by a garbage truck. good evening and thank you for joining us. i'm on a date and i'm dan ashley. you're watching abc 7 news at five live here on abc 7 hulu live in wherever you stream. this morning's accident was san jose's eighth pedestrian fatality this year and keep in mind the years barely a month old abc 7 news reporter. zach fuentes has more on what happened today and what the city says. it's doing to change those tragic statistics. what should have been a routine morning turned tragic when a woman was hit and killed in this neighborhood by a garbage truck. apparently the victim was taking out the garbage cans and entered a blind spot and was struck at that time police. say the drivers stayed at the scene and was cooperative and

investigation is still ongoing but police say there was no indication of drugs or alcohol this afternoon the company the driver worked for california waste solutions sent us a statement that said in part. we are deeply saddened and shocked by the tragic accident. that occurred this morning and are sincerest condolences go out to the individuals loved ones. they go on to say that the safety of its customers and employees is of the utmost priority. this marks the city's tenth fatal collision of 2022 and the eighth victim who was a pedestrian contrast to last year in 2021 the 10th incident incurred april 1st, and the eighth pedestrian killed in the city in 2021 actually happened june 12th since 2015 the city of san. aid declared a vision zero initiative with the goal of eliminating traffic fatalities, the city's investing six million dollars in infrastructure improvements colin haney with the department of transportation says that an incident like today's is relatively rare for the most part local neighborhood

sandy. yeah, it was definitely blowing. no doubt about it, dan and alma. i want to show you a view from our exploratorium camera. you can see how choppy the waters are right now we do have small craft advisories going through tomorrow morning as you take a look at the wind gusts 43 miles an hour on mount diablo 31 on mount tam. so it's still gusty at the higher elevations north bay mountains under a high wind warning until midnight tonight advisory is going until midnight tonight for the rest of the area shaded and yellow except the santa cruz mountains in coast until 9pm and for solano county until 6 pm. it's the combination of the gusty winds that could take down some trees power lines. so so that still concerning as you look at the hour. forecast gusty this evening at 6 o'clock the winds begin to ease quite a bit as we had into 10 pm wasn't like that earlier today. look at the peak gus so far pine flat road up in the north face 73 miles an hour mount diablo over 50 hawkeye 51, los faqueros 57 mile an hour winds. i'll be back to let you know

50 states including california's edd are asking congress not to make workers pay back benefits. they receive by mistake during the pandemic. millions of workers may have been overpaid through no fault of their own as rules kept changing for pandemic unemployment benefits 79 year since michael. finney is here to explain exactly what this means michael. dan i'm here in california about a million workers currently are required to prove they deserved unemployment benefits the past two years now most are independent contractors and part-timers who normally would not receive benefits. well now the national association of state workforce agencies once congress to let workers keep the overpayments if

today's reopening comes after years of demands by the public and after months of study and planning by the rapid transit agency. it's about time bart changed to meet our writers where they are and address the real. concerns when you got to go you got to go. our plans to bart plans to reopen the restrooms at the 19th street station in downtown oakland on february 25th, then follow with other reopenings over the course of the next year commuting change is coming to highway 101 in san mateo county. express lanes from the santa clara county line to whipple avenue in redwood city are set to officially open next friday, february 11th. the express lanes will operate from 5 am until 8 pm on weekdays and are available for drivers who have fast track. carpools with three or more people can use the lanes for free three or more. it's phase one of a project with a goal of creating 22 miles of express lanes up to interstate 380 in south san francisco if

you've ever driven 280 down the peninsula into silicon valley, you've no doubt enjoyed the views of pristine wildland. most of that is a result of a vision a small group of residents had 50 years ago to preserve it from development. their efforts are helping make a better bay area with the expansion of and 65,000 acres of open space abc 7 news reporter david louis shows us why this is special year for the district that acquired those lands from sky 7. you can see how developed the peninsula and silicon valley are that alarms some concerned residents in the early 1970s million people were being added every decade and they saw these green hills and local aglands being eaten up by low slung office buildings and development measure r was passed in 1972 and created the mid peninsula open space district two years later in 1974. the first ninety acres were purchased by his 30 anniversary in 2002. it acquired 47,000 acres creating 25 preserves and this

year as a celebrated its 50th anniversary. it is protected 65,000 acres after. think almost 369 million dollars with cash and financing julie and elder diperno from san jose are among the nearly 4 million visitors each year who visit mid-pence preserves they like to hike at rancho san antonio preserve the district's largest three to four times a week once a week. they do five miles. that's when we go all the way. to the top there. we call it the telephone poles and then we come down and sometimes we bring a picnic lunch here or we have a picnic lunch all the way up. the view is beautiful too even with all the visitors. is a natural habitat and there are mountain lions here, but that is also part of what the open space district does. we are working with on a research study with the puma project on mountain lion interactions with humans and trying to understand better how we can prevent those interactions, which usually don't end well for the mountain lion.

history month, we're highlighting people and organizations working to build a better bay area and return to the south bay tonight with a look at what one group is doing to break the stigma of mental health. in communities of color abc 7 news reporters. zach fuentes has the story. for the last several years mental health has slowly become a less taboo topic but stigma around it still exists particularly in communities of

color. we've been ostracized in a number of ways and this is my one personal theory, but we don't necessarily want to do things that are going to further ostracize us dr. glenna also says that a lot of it may have to do with what it become cultural norms happens in my house stays in my house, but the silicon valley-based african-american community service agency is working to break stigma. we're making it know that therapy as dr. glenna would say therapy is a lifestyle and as opposed to be a part of your lifestyle executive director, milan valentin worked with dr. glenna to help communities. color make that happen black people brown people people of color needed to talk to somebody because of the increase in suicide. just what was happening during the pandemic so speaking to dr. glenn. i saw that she had the ability and skill set to reach people in a particular way, which became our our monday meetings those monday meetings are free virtual therapy sessions open to all that have been happening every
