opening ceremonies tonight and the unusual sights and sounds from beijing today. and later, school lunch goes vegan but are kids really ready to hold the meat and cheese? good friday morning. i'm mona kosar abdi. >> i'm andrea fujii. andrew is off. we begin with that massive storm sweeping across the country now moving into the northeast. >> heavy rain and dangerous ice will make for a treacherous morning commute from texas to here in cleveland. a massive and deadly winter storm is barreling across the country. a winter wallop from mexico to maybe. the wicked weather gripping texas less than one year after a catastrophic freeze buckled the power grid. sleet and snow already triggering thousands of power outages while demand for electricity is expected to peak this morning. >> we are dealing with one of the most significant icing events that we've had in the

state of texas in at least several decades. >> reporter: schools in houston closed today after the city was crippled by ice and snow overnight. at least ten vehicles involved in this crash. in austin icy roads blamed for this 14-vehicle pileup. those crashes among dozens of others plaguing drivers across the state as temperatures dipped into the teens. the conditions so bad officials shut down the dallas-fort worth airport for hours. more than a foot of snow already falling in some cities, and more is on the way. >> as the ice and snow piles up the rain turns to an icy mix in the morning along the big cities, new york to boston. expect over a foot of snow in northern new york and new england but as this thing pushes through the bigger story will be the cold air catching up to moisture and could see a flash freeze. >> reporter: in tennessee, nearly 150,000 power outages reported overnight. trees and power lines toppling as the storm blew through the state, and further south

in alabama at least one person killed after a tornado touched down near tuscaloosa. the twister shredding roofs, downing power lines and tossing these trucks off the road into a pond. we'll take a closer look at your forecast in about five minutes. a new twist in the showdown with russia over ukraine. u.s. officials now say russia is planning to stage a fake attack as propaganda to justify invading ukraine. it comes as russia sends even more troops to belarus just north of ukraine's capital. moscow has denied u.s. allegations that it plans to videotape a fake attack. experts say releasing this kind of intelligence about russia is a big risk for the u.s. abc's ian pannell is in ukraine. >> reporter: disclosing this kind of intelligence is rare, but the aim is to stop russia from carrying out a potential fake attack or to make it harder to spread disinformation afterwards if it does, but it speaks to how serious this crisis really is. >> meanwhile, this morning the first of 1,700 american paratroopers will arrive in europe to bolster nato's presence in the region.

and we are learning more about the u.s. military raid in syria that resulted in the death of isis leader hajji aballah. there are conflicting reports of how many were killed during the raid. abc's ike ejiochi is here with the very latest. ike, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, president biden is calling this mission a success, and now he's getting praise from some republican lawmakers. this morning a successful counterterrorism mission in northwest syria. one of the secret hideouts of hajji aballah is destroyed. the known terrorist dead after the pentagon says he blew himself up along with his wife and children before u.s. forces could capture him. >> they're leaderless today and that's a significant blow. >> reporter: u.s. intelligence had been tracking the isis leader for months. the president and his national security team watching the mission live. helicopters carrying special operations forces swooped in shouting through a bull horn for the people inside the home to come out. >> in a final act of desperate

cowardness with no regard for the lives of his own family or others in the building, he chose to blow himself up. >> reporter: gunfire ringing out from the second floor of the building following the explosion. the pentagon says an isis deputy and his wife started shooting at u.s. forces who quickly fired back killing them. then the pentagon says armed combatants appeared on scene. at least two of the fighters were killed by a u.s. helicopter gunship. another helicopter was destroyed by u.s. forces after experiencing a mechanical problem. the pentagon says u.s. forces protected more than ten women and children in the home because of the choice to go with ground forces rather than a drone strike to limit civilian deaths. >> strong indications are that to the degree there's a loss of innocent life, it's loss caused by mr. abdallah and his lieutenant. >> reporter: no u.s. casualties, but in complex raids like this, there may be a discrepancy in the number of civilian deaths. >> we will continue over the

coming hours and days to gather information including the after-action reports from some of our most experienced professional service members who were sent to conduct this operation. >> reporter: now here in d.c. democratic leadership and members of the republican party are praising president biden and members of the armed forces for targeting a leader of isis. mona. >> ike, thank you. a developing story from minneapolis. police have released body camera video of a deadly officer involved shooting. they say 22-year-old amir locke was killed after hiding under a blanket with a gun. now, warning, some viewers may find this video disturbing. >> police. search warrant. >> hands, hands. >> get on the ground. >> reporter: officers had a warrant from a homicide case. locke was not a suspect, though. critics claim police failed to announce themselves, but the acting police chief says the video proves otherwise. also at issue, whether locke was pointing the gun at police officers.

civil rights advocates claim he was pointing the gun at the floor. locke's family is holding a news conference to respond later today. at this time yesterday we told you facebook's stock was tanking. but then it got worse. facebook's parent company meta suffered the largest single day drop in value in the history of the stock market. shares plunged 26% wiping out a total of $250 billion of value because of concern about revenue and a lack of growth. we turn now to the winter olympics kicking off in beijing today. it'll be an olympics like no other. here's will ganss. >> reporter: just hours away from the start of the winter games and inside the olympic bubble another world entirely. cocktails served by walking hazmat suits and robots roaming the hallways spraying disinfect tant. this morning's opening ceremony a much more subdued celebration set to last only 100 minutes compared to tokyo's four-hour opener last summer. and while beijing's 2008

ceremony had 15,000 performers in the spotlight, today only 3,000 will be included. 95% are teenagers marking the first time in olympic history teens are invited on such a large scale. as far as spectators go, vladimir putin will be in attendance. when he attended the opening ceremony in beijing back in 2008, russia invaded georgia on the same day making many uneasy in light of current tensions in ukraine. meanwhile, athletes on edge too from covid to injury. the u.s. women's hockey team's hopes of back-to-back gold medals crumbling after brianna decker was injured in a game against finland. the ioc president says he plans to meet with peng shuai after making sexual abuse allegations against a political official last year. >> the answer is, yes. >> reporter: adding he doesn't plan to request a formal investigation unless she asks for one.

>> it's her life. it's her allegations. >> reporter: while no american leadership plans to attend the games in person, the white house lit up in red, white and blue in support of team usa. these winter games will include a record 109 sporting events this year with seven new events including women's mono bob, mixed team ski jumping and men's and women's big air skiing. mona, andrea. >> will ganss, thank you. time now for a look at your friday weather. good morning. this marathon storm continues in the northeast heading into the friday. we have winter storm warnings. we have an ice storm warning in kentucky. very dangerous roads to finish off the workweek. the ice storm threat will be at it's worst through friday from southern new york state down into the ohio river valley. snowfall forecast. the major cities won't get much but northern new england, eastern great lakes could see up to a foot and cold in texas friday into the weekend could see some record lows. i'm accuweather meteorologist kevin coskren.

back now with video of a union pacific train derailing at the busy santa fe junction in kansas city. six cars piled into each other. one slamming into the bridge support beam. no word yet on why the train went off the rails. rescue workers in morocco are desperately trying to reach a little boy trapped in a well since tuesday. the 5-year-old fell more than 100 feet down a narrow opening.

crews managed to lower an oxygen tube, water and a camera to monitor the boy who is conscious and responding to them. they're frantically digging a wider hole next to the well hoping to pull him to safety today. >> hopefully they can get him out. and back in this country with covid cases on the decline, there is a growing push to unmask children in school, but others say not just yet. here's abc's rhiannon ally. >> reporter: this morning, new clashes in classrooms across the country. >> how can a little superintendent feel that they can supersede an executive order? >> at the end of the day it's about parental rights. >> they're depriving those kids of equal access to our public education system. >> reporter: the debate over school mask mandates heating up with protests coast to coast. in virginia, dozens of students have been suspended despite the governor's executive order making masks optional. >> this is about parents having the rights to make the best decisions for their kids regarding their health, regarding their education. >> reporter: while in

california, these students were sent to the gym after refusing to cover their faces. >> i have to abide by the mandate. that's what i'll continue to do. >> reporter: with 400,000 new covid cases per day, the american academy of pediatrics says masking in school is still needed to protect kids. 15 states and washington, d.c. currently require masks in school. but other states have banned mandates arguing it should be up to parents. >> if my daughter is wearing a mask to prevent them from spreading covid to another student or even a teacher. >> reporter: even though health experts say mask mandates are needed right now, that may not be the case for long. >> we have to start having the conversation about when we can lift masks. if you look at a map of the country, 99.75% of counties are still in the red, so once they get the numbers a little lower i can expect states to start saying, hey, time to lift those masks. >> reporter: with the fda and

an suv caught fire in suburban denver with a dog trapped in the back. he broke the window and pulled the frightened dog to safety. he's okay, though. police are investigating a fight during the nfl game in los angeles that left a man in a coma. they say video from outside sofi stadium shows a 49ers fan being punched and falling to the ground. police say the suspect may have been wearing a rams jersey. they are now searching the vehicle associated with the suspect. a controversial nfl team owner is facing new allegations of sexual harassment. and this morning, he's responding to the claims made in front of congress yesterday. just hours after the nfl's washington commanders announced their new name, owner dan snyder is facing new allegations of sexual harassment. >> he left his hand on the middle of my thigh until i physically removed it. >> reporter: tiffany johnston, a former cheerleader and marketing manager for the team says snyder harassed her at dinner, touching her and pushing her towards his limo. >> the only reason dan snyder

removed his hand from my back and stopped pushing me towards his limo is because his attorney intervened and said, dan, dan, this is a bad idea, a very bad idea. >> reporter: other former employees claim team executives hired prostitutes on a business trip. >> under dan snyder's leadership women were used as sex objects and tools to increase sales. >> reporter: in a statement last night, snyder apologized for those mistreated saying, these issues have all been thoroughly investigated, reported to the league and remediated by the firing of the responsible individuals, and as to the new allegation against me personally from over 15 years ago, i deny it categorically. "the washington post" previously reported more than 40 former female employees of the team claimed they were sexually harassed by snyder and other male employees dating back to at least 2006. the nfl fined the team 10 million and snyder stepped down from day-to-day operations after an independent investigation found many of the allegations

were accurate, but the nfl refused to release details of that investigation citing privacy concerns for those involved. now, new calls for the nfl to release that report. >> when the investigation of the air pressure of tom brady's football concludes with 200 plus pages of a written report but two decades of sexual harassment concludes with nothing, the nfl is showing us their complete lack of respect for women. >> reporter: the nfl says it will review the new allegations. it seems like everything is getting more expensive. and now you can add flowers to that list thanks to pandemic-related supply chain issues and poor growing conditions. there is a global shortage with valentine's day approaching fast. as a result, you can expect to pay more and get less. >> uh-oh. a price hike for amazon customers, the company is raising annual costs of its prime membership to $139, a $20 increase. and the monthly rate will rise from $13 to $15. coming up, school lunches go vegan. also ahead, the queen marks a major milestone.
