rena roy abc news, new york. let's bring in mike nico for more on that storm. i'm looking over your left shoulder there the haze behind you looks. like stuff i don't want to breathe actually. yeah, it's getting close in some areas modesto and also well, what else is out there stockton had unhealthy air for those most sensitive today did quite make its way into our neighborhoods, but it was really close. all right, let's take a look at what's going on as far as our temperatures. it's not gorgeous afternoon. so yeah, the air is good get on out there this late afternoon and enjoy temperatures mainly in the low to mid 60s from 60 in mill valley to american canyon at 63. same thing in napa 64 in rosa ukiah look at that 68 degrees. five of bodega bay in sausalito about 57 elsewhere. we have 57 in colma. look at cupertino about 59, but just down the road san jose 64, san ramon 67, alameda 61, san carlos 62 el sobrante lafayette of about 60. if you're heading out this evening temperatures will drop after the sun sets at 5:36.

to the mid 50s and then some high clouds are rolling and that will slow the cooling down just a touch. i would still dress warmly as temperatures by nine o'clock. we'll hang out around 47 to 49 degrees. here's a look at that haze that larry was talking about and this is going to be around for the better part of the seven day forecast is there's no rain in the forecast. we'll have a light offshore win with high pressure sitting on top of us, which will bring us a warming trip that begins this weekend with near record highs next week. i think we need to start putting wanted posters out. any chance of rain because we're just not seeing anything through at least valent. day, here's a look at our current air quality and you can see yellow just about everywhere and green around santa rosa moving forward. yeah. it doesn't look good if you're hiking in the hills, but it looks like we'll stay moderate. if not, get some good. as we head into sunday monday and not a lot, but at least we'll stay below anything that would harm us especially those most sensitive a few high clouds roam in tonight's the temperatures. maybe a couple degrees.
4:20 pm
than this morning with mid-30s to mid 40s from our inland valleys to san francisco. francisco. tomorrow high clouds will decrease from the south and that will open us into low 60s around places like richmond to upper 60 67 in santa rosa and san jose 64 in concord 63 in oakland, fremont, palo alto, san mateo and also san francisco. here's a look at our future cast and you can see those clouds coming in during the overnight hours and then look just as quickly they move out now sunday if you think about going to the beaches there is the threat of a few low clouds so something to think about right now. look how gorgeous and calm and serena is in santa cruz where 6 tomorrow 59 in stinson beach 60 in pacifica potentially even warmer sunday if you're heading to the beach low to mid 60s until you get to santa cruz at about 68 degrees now later next week. we talked about the potential for record highs and here's a look at the forecast seventy to eighty percent above average temperatures. that's the likelihood. so tomorrow 60 to 66 62 to 68

4:25 pm
here wine and liquor sales will resume february 16th more news for you. southwest says customers can use their 20 and 2021 drink coupons through this year. so my question is do those drink coupons apply to booze. they do right? yeah. oh i see. yes. yeah, so we're getting back to normal if the alcohol is back. it must be we're getting back to normal. maybe the middle of winter but many of us are ready for summer vacation. well always kind of yes always now might be the best time to book airfare for the summer months if you're looking to score. deal, here's abc news reporter rena roy with a look at how you can get those deals. thinking about your summer vacation time time time time tie and start booking think about booking your flights the same way you think about buying swimwear? it's gonna be most expensive if you buy it during the summer, but you're gonna get the best deals on swimsuits if you buy it during the winter. it's the exact same with flights
4:26 pm
by searching in the opposite season. you can find major flight bargains if you wait until the last minute you'll pay the price. i think the cheap last-minute flights is something that was a bit of a pandemic anomaly and in 2022 is going to start to revert back to how it was pre-pandemic. tuesdaytuesdaytuesdaytuesdaytuey explains that airfares are changing. by the day hour and sometimes the minute the best way to think about it is to think in terms of what i call goldilocks windows booking not too early, but also not too. i just right in the middle. kai's recommends booking domestic flights 1 to 3 months in advance of travel and for international flights two to eight months ahead. and so that's why right now in the middle of winter the goldilocks window for summer travel is actually upon us. their benefit

its endorsement for moderna's vaccine for adults following approval earlier in the week by the fda up until then it had emergency use authorization. so now it's full authorization more than 900,000 people in the us have died from covid since the start of the pandemic the country hit 800,000 less than two months ago, california hit its own milestones today. the state has topped 80,000 deaths and eight million confirmed cases. dr. relok patel part of the abc 7 news vaccine team joining us now live as always. thanks doc for the time. we talked about the cdc recommendation of moderna. do you really think this is going to have more people going to get vaccinated? i mean, it seems like you've had the opportunity for months and months and months to get a shot. you have larry that's why i don't think we're gonna see some big exodus for people who are hesitant to go get the shot now, but there's a couple positives out here anyone out there who has called the modernist shot experimental that can be put because you've now had two independent review committees
4:31 pm
the fj and the cdc give it full authorization. also, there was some concern about the myocarditis and it was confirmed again that it is extremely rare in your far more likely to get that heart inflammation from covid itself then from the vaccine and last but not least a full fta approval means that moderna can go start marketing their product. that sounds very counterintuitive that i'm happy about that. but hopefully that means some targeted education and educating people about mrna vac. and squashing some of that misinformation or there's plenty of that out there. we talked about san jose and their new booster requirement at city-owned venue. so if you want to go to a sharks game the warriors have the same thing at chase center in san francisco. how important do you think it is that people have boosters, especially in larger venues. i think it would have been more important a few months ago. it does feel a little bit interesting that this is happening right now when we're seeing a downtrend in cases and larry this might work here in the bay area but in the group broader landscape only about 40% of eligible americans have gotten boosted so it's gonna be
4:32 pm
interesting to see how this impacts attendance if there's gonna be pushback and how that goes, but in terms of controlling the spread and protecting illness yes boosters are the way to go and it's about time. we just fully immunized including the primary. series plus the extra shot if you got j&j or two if you had one of the mrna vaccines, all right, let's continue down that road because some countries in europe denmark england, ireland. they're lifting masked mandates as well as vaccination checks. they're saying this pandemic has entered a whole new phase. do you agree with that? larry it is so hard to compare the e with our country here. i want to put this to rest right now because a lot of people out there are saying hey look at denmark. they lifted everything. why can't we do that here? denmark is nine times smaller than california. you can't compare the two countries denmark also has an 80% vaccination rate 60% of people in denmark. on their booster denmark has had about 3,800 covid deaths. so the start of pandemic we've had more than that since
4:33 pm
tuesday. it is very difficult to compare our country to just denmark. i think that regionally we need to start revisiting restrictions and slowly lifting them based on metrics. absolutely, but we can't collectively all 50 states say we're going to lift everything because the eu did our numbers are astronomically different. all right a new study from the california department of public health found people who wear the n95. respirators indoors about 80% less likely to test positive for covid than those who do not wear mask. well this changed some of the recommendations. i kind of feel i know the answer, but i'll ask the question anyway. you know, i think this changes anyone's mind who is doubting the effectiveness of n95 to study showed that you know a cloth mask was better than no mask and a surgical mask is better than that and 95 being the best but there's a couple limitations in the study. there was only 520 people they looked at the study also didn't account for things like physical distancing ventilation. how long people stayed in those settings? so i do see a future
4:34 pm
potentially. god forbid. there's another but in a high-risk setting such as in the hospital there might be recommendation to work at 95's, but i don't necessarily see this changing general recommendations, but anyone out there who wants the best level of protection? is it just more evidence that n95 is the top of the line? best way to kind of look for a mask in terms of form and fit this study just proves it even further if we do not see some other variant pop up and spread like wildfire. what do you think the next couple of months look like? the next couple of months larry looked like us talking about life with this moving towards and endemic place. we brought up denmark earlier. you saw me get heated denmark also does not have surging hospital capacities. that's what we want to see in the next few months. we want to see a place where we no longer have those long er wait times. we don't have any more full icus and any localized outbreaks are not going to disrupt our normal way of life. that's when we can start talking about letting this virus live in the background and we can finally say we don't have to call it a pandemic anymore. you know what? i want to see doc. me in person
4:35 pm
in studio you in person? yes nailed it with baby laura yes. actually i was not refers ladies and gentlemen, that was spontaneous. that was spontaneous. i want to see her more than actually, but you have she's ready. she's ready uncle larry. she's coming. all right. thanks, doc you too, sir? thank you. all right our abc 7 news vaccine team is here to answer your questions head to abc 7 news.com slash vaccine. click on the giant blue box and submit your question baby. elora gets ratings larry. yes. well, that's what we're looking for here. valentine's day is just around the corner, but you might already be too late for one
4:38 pm
it's time now for the four at four a little advice for you if you plan on ordering flowers for valentine's day place your order now because hours across the country are facing supply chain issues that are threatening to leave them short of flowers. february is always a big month for flower sales largely because of valentine's day, but because of the pandemic this is the second year in a row that many shipments of flowers some of which come from the country may not make it to their destination on time 10 days. dan ten days. i know don't blow it right place your orders now. i wish we could buy them now because there's so much cheaper, but they won't keep until that time. yeah, dan, they'll go bad if you buy now. yeah, i know here, you know, the old the rolling stones song dead
4:39 pm
flowers. that's what you have. oh, i need to ask kristen some advice. oh, yeah do it half to get flowers or can i get something alternative? that could be just as nice and equally danger will robinson right in my opinion and i'm just one woman. it doesn't have to be flowers. it could be anything. that's thoughtful. you know, would you have in mind mike chocolates? are you thinking chocolate? i got to be bigger than that if you're substituting flowers, except to hawaii. yes. yes, very romantic. why are they mutually exclusive mike? why don't you give both right? well, they'll be flowers wait or chocolates waiting in in fact that chocolate i think we need to help mike. we need to help mike out a little bit off camera later on. we're gonna do a gofundme level here the bar so high yeah with a valentine's day approaching a twist on a childhood favorite, but mike think about this build-a-bear. let's launch just a series of stuffed animals for adults. this is this is going to get you
4:40 pm
out of the dog house. it's called a build-a-bear after dark. hmm. the concept was announced on the company's facebook page. you can get yourself a who wears this feelings on his chest? oh, that's cute or one who's got a big heart. there's paulette the rabbit. that's cute. yeah. yes. paul is very cute. and reddit. what is paula? is that champagne in the leather skirt what i have many questions. about the direction polite is heading with her life. this is after dark. yeah, it is just and yeah, you got you got the bottle of bubbly. there's a spice things up. alright, i was not expecting that dan. no me neither, but you know right when the kids were little did build-a-bear and it's fun. it's great. it's really fun. it's very interesting to see if they get adults to go might be fun first date or something for people icebreaker type of an evening for adults, but that's cute fun. we'll just add that to mike's. i was what the flowers and the candy and the trip to hawaii and why yeah, i was gonna circle
4:41 pm
back to that because there's a build-a-bear in downtown disney and maybe trip to disney, but i don't think they'll have these bears at that one. oh, i don't know but i will say i know they have very fashionable plethora of clothing outfit choices. we're going to spend so much. money on this he'll be better off because of roses. you're right. all right, you may notice something a little different on your twitter feed today the down vote buttons global rollout is now underway. it's the downward pointing arrow next to the likes the downbow button is not public. it's just online feedback for twitter. so it will have a better idea of what you actually want to see if you haven't gathered hitting the downvote arrow means you don't like it. so maybe it's just giving you know, twitter or so they improve the algorithm and serve you up things that you like better. i don't know but you know if you use reddit a lot, you're used to the down vote, you know, so i don't want to see anything if i just down without having download on most social media the whole thing. just no.
4:42 pm
please don't do that to me, please. what but down vote you. yeah, no, your thumbs up mike. always come through with flowers until very you too. no, i don't need i don't need the flowers. i'm trying to keep you. if you understand what the goal is, yes, i'm just glad it's not public because i can see if you can download someone publicly and they can see it that could lead to even more. right, right. that's true as it's true. we don't have enough. conflict on social media you gave me a download that actually i know where you live. i know right? all right a family in new zealand has some amazing video of their vacation. they couldn't have shot this themselves. we don't think it's a bird's-eye view of one of the country's national parks and they owe it all to this parrot who swiped the families go for. oh, he's god. he's a thief. this is wow magnificent footage. he is. he's a tremendous photographer. the camera was set down on the balcony and the bird grabbed it
4:43 pm
the family eventually found the gopro. this guy's covering a lot of territory here how they found the gopro. oh, he's landed. it. looks like he's landed that is so cool and they found out a large rock nearby. let's see. the only way you can get that is like if dan if you had a wing suit. oh, yeah, that might not end as well. no, that doesn't typically the landings are all that's pretty cool. i have to say that's you know the gopers i've seen i guess they are small and smaller a time, but for a bird that seems like it's a fairly heavy thing to carry, but maybe not very cool. i like it. is how it ended like was that at the video that was the end of it after that that was a draw he dropped it and then they went on a search and they found the gopro. i know you told us larry that it ended up on a big rock, but i as soon as i thought well we must have found it because we see the video, but that's yeah really unique perspective. cool. very cool. all right, that's it for the all right, that's it for the four care coalition, it's so good to see you all! alright! let's brainstorm. any ideas for new members? i'd like to nominate alaska airlines.

levies could look like around the bay area and the country while we're looking at here is a native plant called. and yarrow jesse olson is the habitat restoration director at saved the bay. the environmental group is using native plants to green nearly 10 acres of what's known as a horizontal levy. it's a gently sloping stretch of land connecting bidwell park to surrounding salt ponds, and i think a lot of people moving into the future are thinking of more nature-based solutions for these levies. so traditionally you might be used to a harden are like riprap and now we're thinking how could we protect the shoreline and also provide additional benefits to accomplish that vision the safe of a team has been growing plants in a makeshift nursery a short distance away scores of volunteers have joined forces to plant the area by hand. after an agricultural team placed the original materials using heavy equipment right now. it doesn't look. much because they're only in our first year, but from a trained eye you can already see those native plants coming up the

project also echoes a movement across the country with a growing threat from climate change and sea level rise many environmental groups. say we need alternatives to simply building higher levies and taller seawolves. natalie snyder is with the environmental defense fund late last year the group joined nearly a hundred other organizations in drafting a letter to the army corps of engineers. it called on the court to refocus its planning. coordinate your based solutions, so it doesn't have to be these strong seawalls, which know actually harm the environment and are not sustainable in the long term with climate change here at home save the bay believes the ravenswood project can act as a pilot for future planning perhaps becoming a model for major shoreline projects. we are learning a lot here. hopefully, we'll see success and that will be something we can share. let's hope that's the case save the bay is also planning to expand the project soon to include another stretch of a horizontal levy in the same area. keep you posted on that
