building a better bay area moving forward find solutions, this is abc 7 news. proposed school closures in oakland. good evening. i'm amidates and i'm dan ashley. thanks for joining us sky 7 is live over downtown oakland. the group has started to march from city hall to school district offices. this is one of several protests that have happened this week. the school board board is set to vote tuesday on there to close merge or downsize more than a dozen campuses abc 7 news senior education reporter land. melendez is live with more on these last-minute efforts the question. i suppose land is will they make a difference? will they help? well, you know down they just

couldn't sit there and do nothing right, you know every time oakland unified announces that closures are necessary. it's followed by protests as you know, in some cases very angry protests and this tends to an impact on the school board so much so that remember in 2019. the district was trying to identify up to 24 schools that had to close or merge over five years to date the board has nott followed through on this day when their school is likely to close students from koramatsu discovery academy in oakland made sure their voices were heard much like the man whose name is on the building fred t. caramatsu who fought against japanese internment camps. freddy kromatsu he told us to speak up for what is right why this school made the closure? listen, not others baffles teachers and staff. it really has been a community

here. most of our staff has been here five or six years most of the students here live in the neighborhood. it's very hard for other people out there to look for schools that they that they that feel like they're at home. and i think they should keep it open next. tuesday's school board vote will not only have an impact on this community, but may also change. choose commitment to the profession and i'm getting my master's right now in biology and i was thinking, you know, do i need to make change if i want to stay in this? sorry. school on the closure list at least 50% of students here are african-american the superintendent of schools has acknowledged. that black kids will be imp acted the most by these closures this school is important to me because i've been here for five years and i and it was very fun, and i do not want to leave the

school a district report found that 15,000 students have left the district or moved out of the city in the past 20 years. this decline has meant that the district receives millions less in state funding another reason for this drastic action is the high cost of taming 80 schools. yes. it's just a building, but it's also a community and it serves the community around here. so, is there any hope that these schools will remain open? well recently the oakland city council approved a resolution asking governor newsom and the state legislature to get rid of the school districts outstanding debt to prevent closures. they justify this by saying that you know, california will have an estimated 45 billion dollar surplus in 22-23. so they're basically saying help us out. but again, dan, what about other districts san francisco? for example? that's true leanne as we reported earlier in the week a

teacher and an administrator ann. they were going on a hunger strike to protest these closures. what's the latest from them? well, you know dan this is what day four for them. i'm told that moses omalade and andre sanchez are camped outside of westlake middle school. that's where they work and are drinking only water with electrolytes and some tea they have said in the past that they will continue with the hunger strike unless the school board changes its mind and that's all i know. okay. actually and very much. today authorities in southern california identified the man arrested for allegedly throwing the punch that injured a 49ers fan from oakland outside sofi stadium on sunday 40 year old daniel luna remains in a medically induced coma abc's 7 news reporter cornell has today's new developments. england police officers trace the vehicle seen in a security video englewood mayor james -- announcing the arrest of a suspects surrounding a fight

outside sofi stadium during the nfc championship game 49ers versus the rams ed left 40 year old niners fan daniel luna from oakland in a medically induced coma 33 year old brian alexis sifuentes roselle from la surrendered to police. he was arrested and charged with felony assault it looked like a tailgate. to me mayor -- says the still unreleased surveillance video that he watched shows the brief fight begin with a pushing match in the stadium parking lot. he says luna wearing a white niners jersey appears to shove a man possibly wearing a yellow rams jersey the individual white jersey. pushes the individual in the yellow jersey the individual in the yellow jersey. pushes the individual in the white jersey and then strikes him once it appears in the face area. the individual in the white jersey falls backwards hits his head on the pavement doesn't move after that. the mayor says, it's unclear. how the fight started luna is in

communities in the country by us news and world report the city of san jose makes up a majority of the population and the city believes covid-19 vaccine and booster requirements have contributed to that ranking party always has been the safety and health of our community as well as our employees. so i think this plays a huge part the second new mandate goes into effect on february 11th. that's when police fire healthcare and other city employees will be required to be boosted. an ordinance in the city of oakland may keep some contra costa county high school students from going to their prom the city now requires vaccinations for indoor events a change since danville's monte vista high booked a venue in oakland. the school principal is fighting for an exception for students. he says have no choice in their vaccination status abc 7 news reporter. zach fuentes has more oakland scottish rite center has long been the local venue. special events including the monte vista high school prom the school booked it again in advance for this.

junior prom they were out of school for such a long period of time and stuck at home. they are all craving these kind of super fun events, dr. kevin ahern the school principal says that when they booked the venue, they thought they would work under alameda county's guidelines for large indoor events vaccinations required or a negative covid test what we want to wear up. was it in december the city of oakland had put together an ordinance that that required vaccination only the city's ordinance only allows a negative covid test instead if a person shows proof of a verified medical exemption, dr. ahern says that excludes roughly 20 unvaccinated students. they're old enough to get vaccinated. but ahern says there could be more to the reasons that they're not so we're talking about minors talking about students under the age of 18. they don't have full control over over choices and so students, you know would may want to get back to me, but their parents are asked or are having them not get vaccinated for one. another dr. ahern sends a proposal to the city asking that

high school's leasing venues be allowed to accept a negative covid test. he said that the high school would offer the test on campus the day before the february 12th prom the proposal went nowhere. we reached out to the city who sent a statement that set in part. the ordinance does not authorize city staff with discretion to grant the exemption proposed. however a person attending a large indoor event such as this may be exempt from the vaccine proof requirement if they are entitled under any applicable. a reasonable accommodation for a medical condition ahern says that he wants to continue the conversation with the city. so that students who have spent two years in the pandemic can enjoy a sense of normalcy even council graduations proms other events. and this is that first opportunity to really celebrate as a class zach fuentes abc 7 news. sonoma county will allow its ban on large gatherings to expire thursday. the county's health officer says covid-19 cases and hospitalizations are declining the ban on indoor gatherings of 50 or more people and outdoor

sheriff's recruits graduated from the academy as did 30 recruits from 13 other agencies former richmond police. chief. chris. magnus is now officially on the job as commissioner of us customs and border protection homeland security chief alejandro mallorcas administered the office to magnus today in washington magnus will oversee three core missions of the country's largest law enforcement agency counterterrorism border security and trade enforcement the 61 year old served as richmond's chief of police from 2006 to 2016. san francisco is getting 200 million dollars to help with its affordable housing crisis. the money will provide the final funding to build four shovel ready projects. they include sites in the tenderloin patrol hill treasure island and remodeling project on market street this project on the embarcadero is another example of a low housing project that just opened in november the funding for the new project is from the american rescue plan

see just how hazy it is visibility is not so great air quality will be moderate for your saturday sunday. most areas will be moderate a couple of spots like the south central bay good and then monday tuesday, we'll bring in a few extra good air quality locations. what's bringing all this? well, we have the stagnant air mass down sloping wind that is dragging some of that hazy air into the region and as you take a look here a moderate air quality across most of the bay area santa cruz and santa rosa reporting good air quality. right now temperatures are in the 50s and the 60s. so if you're heading out 56 in livermore 55 half moon bay might want to grab a light jacket live look from our east bay hills camera beautiful view as we look at the sunset here. hazy skies warmer weather for the weekend temperatures continue to rise next week. and records are possible wednesday and thursday in case you're getting away. you don't want to deal with the haze. it's going to be mainly sunny and mild at our local airports light breeze loaded upper 60s. honolulu is looking at scattered showers warm weather 80 degrees
