think about it, it's equivalent to the entire population of columbus, ohio. president biden reacting overnight in a statement urging americans to get vaccinated, saying 250 million americans have stemmed up to protect themselves, their families and their communities by getting at least one shot. and we have saved more than 1 million american lives as a result. his comments coming as the cdc gives moderna's covid-19 vaccine full approval for adults rather than just emergency use authorization, becoming the second fully approved covid-19 vaccine along with pfizer. the u.s. marked 800,000 covid-19 deaths just seven weeks ago. the death rate speeding up in recent weeks, you know, partially due to the highly contagious omicron variant, but signs point to a waning omicron surge. all but three states are reporting declining or plateauing cases. just over 120,000 covid-19 positive patients receiving care in hospitals. whit, as you mentioned, that is

down 33% in the last 15 days. gio? >> all right, phil. thank you so much for that. the competition is on in beijing as the winter olympics are now under way. following the opening ceremony and the first medals handled out, abc's maggie rulli joins us from beijing with the latest. maggie, good morning. >> reporter: hey, gio. the winter olympics have officially kicked off in beijing, and norway has picked up the games' first gold in the women's ski athlon, but we are tracking team usa. women's snowboarding is off on a hot streak, three americans who made it to the finals of slope style snowboarding including jamie anderson, back in beijing defending back-to-back gold medals. if she wins another gold this year, she'll be the first snowboarder, man or woman to win three consecutive gold medals taat the olympics. she told abc she's feeling more pressure because she did so well

in the past two years. but she says with that experience she's gained wisdom and said she felt calm and collected. we'll definitely be watching for her, wishing her good luck to win gold as well. we're also following team figure skating. that is going on right now. we saw nathan chen's epic performance. he got his highest score ever in the short program, helping usa start on top. that competition is still going on as well. guys? >> the games just getting under way. thank you. turning to school lunches, which are about to get healthier. the usda has announced new school nutrition standards restoring rules that were relaxed during the trump administration. starting in the 2022 academic year, the biden administration will require schools and child care providers to offer low, nonfat or reduced fat milks, mandate that at least 80% of grains served be considered rich in whole grains. and starting in 2023, a 10% decrease in the sodium levels in

welcome back, everybody. let's get to a board with the trendiest way to snack. of course we're talking about charcuterie boards. >> charcuterie. >> i've been working on how to say that all morning long. the insta ready players perfect for following the winter games in beijing, like me, i'll be doing that, and of course the super bowl as well and valentine's day. all these things coming up we can celebrate and eat together. so say cheese. sammy is here, a better homes and gardens food stylist. good to have you. we started getting our plates ready. >> good morning, guys. thank you so much for having me. >> you're putting together the cheese board right now. walk us through some of the steps here. >> yeah. absolutely. so cheese boards come in a lot of different shapes and sizes, so depending on your board, it's going to depend on how much you're going to eat. for me, i like to have a lot of unique flavors, a lot of unique textures, so having three to five cheese options is always a

must. going from hard cheeses, soft cheeses, even blue cheeses. then you can see here we have an array of cured meats, some crackers, and some fruits just to break up those salty bites. >> i want your board. looks better than our board. once you have all your picks, how do you put it all together? >> yeah. so to start my board, i always like to start with a few ere.ors, and i'm not just talking about the cheeses. so i get my cheeses down first, whether it's the hard cheese or the soft cheese. after the cheeses are done, i come in with my dishes. i've got jams and honeys. then comes the cured meats. the meats can be a little difficult just because they can be difficult to grab. so what i like to do with prosciutto, for example, the cut them in half cross wiewise and them a little roll, kind of like this. so understand you have this, you

just -- yeah, you just pile it up. that way when your it's as easy as picking that up. >> all about the roll because you get that long piece times. >> yeah. >> exactly. okay. >> sammy, i went straight for the valentine's day sweets here. with that around the corner and super bowl around the corner, how can you bump up these boards? >> oh, my gosh. great question. so for the valentine's day board, i played into the theme. i have lots of roses, pinks, and reds, definitely amped up the chocolate here, lots of sweets for your sweet. i also broke up all of our sweet bites with savory things like these salted pretzels that have been covered in chocolate and even a wheel of brie. come game day, super bowl is just around the corner, i filled my board with all of my favorite game day appetizers -- chicken wings, pretzels, cheese dip, to drive home your team morale.
