6:01 pm
cases waning the governor announced that he'll let the mask mandate lapse next tuesday abc 7 news. anchor liz. kreutz is in the newsroom with more on this list. it's not necessarily as cut and dried as it sounds is that right? that's right, dan it is and as you mentioned starting next tuesday only on vaccinated people will be required to wear masks and indoor places. however, local counties can still enact strict or laws. it's unclear. what the bay area counties will decide to do as for the question of when the mass mandate will be lifted for kids in school. that is not part of these new changes and when that happen still remains. unclear as omicron cases continue to fall in california. there's growing questions about when more mandates will be lifted this afternoon governor newsome announced the statewide mass mandate will be lifted on february 15 after that only unvaccinated people will be required to wear masks and doors. yeah. i think that you could there's a case to be made for that ucsf epidemiologist, dr. george
6:02 pm
rutherford supports the decision, but says it's not a sign we're out of the woods just yet. things are falling so fast right now. looks like we're in pretty good shape. however, i would point out there were more cases yesterday than there were at the absolute highest point of the fall of the winter outbreak last year. what's still unclear is when california will lift the mass mandate for kids in schools according to the national academy for health policy, california is one of 16 states that currently require students to wear masks in the classroom. one of those is new jersey where today the democratic governor announced the school mass mandate will lift in march. here in california some parents have been calling on newsome to lift ours, too. saying it's an unfair burden on kids, but dr. rutherford says it's best to keep it. i think that has or tail to it mostly because the downside is not just infection. it's schools get closed and they and they miss out on education and it's disruptive for everyone as es how much longer california
6:03 pm
will need to be in a state of emergency in november governor newsome extended the executive order through march 31st, but newsome critics are questioning that too saying if you can host the super bowl, is there really an emergency dr. rutherford says it's not simple we've been here before we've had rapidly falling rates and then a new variant emerges and things go right back up again. so i'm you know, i think you have to be i think you have to have the flexibility. the scale stuff back if you need to. so as for the mass changes coming next week everyone regardless of vaccination status will have to wear masks and higher risk areas like public transit and nursing homes and other congregate living facilities indoor mega events with more than a thousand people will also have to require vaccinations or negative tests for those attending that are not vaccinated and the state will also lift the requirement that people visiting hospitals and nursing homes must show proof of a negative covid test. so a lot of changes coming we
6:04 pm
will if bay area counties follow them. yeah, that will be interesting liz. obviously the super bowl is sunday. that's two days before the state mask mandate lifts. what did dr. rutherford say about the timing of the super bowl and what about the concerns he has about safety. right, so he certainly does have concerns. it could be a super spread or event but he said in a sense. it's better the super bowl is here in california than anywhere else given that we do have mass mandates and we are overall very cautious. he said even though the mass mandate expires just two days later. he said it's really important. that mass will be required at the super bowl. he believes keeping masks on those extra two days could result in 50% fewer cases than if they were not required dan. wow, 50% that's big. all right. list as of today berkeley restaurants and other businesses serving food or drinks are required to check full vaccination for people ages 5 and up. it had previously been ages 12 and above. also today's certain businesses must make sure employees are up

surveillance cameras on friday berkeley basketball legend. jean ransom was shot and builders he drove on interstate 880 in oakland. he's the fifth person to be killed by gunfire on an oakland freeway in the last nine months. alameda county sheriff gregory ahern is demanding action on cameras now his request is personal last month one of his recruits david nguyen was shot and killed on 580 in oakland. i want to make a very vocal statement to the state. we're going to talk to the state sheriff. see we get some support from the state sheriff's association and work with our law enforcement partners. today oakland mayor libby schaaf pledged to press governor newsom again for funding for cameras. she says the governor has committed to working with the legislature on this issue. a new bill announced just before the weekend aims to take more action against sex trafficking in california if passed hotels and motels in the state could get a fine if they knew sex trafficking was happening and didn't report it abc 7 news reporter.
6:08 pm
zach fuentes has the details. human trafficking according to local experts is happening across the state in tragic ways traffickers particularly sex traffickers. utilize hotels and motels and hotels and motels really don't speak up the way they should california law requires hotels to provide. meaning to staff so they can recognize human trafficking assembly member jordan cunningham from san luis. obispo says he wants to add another tool introducing assembly both 1788 if passed it would let local authorities issue a penalty if it's found that a hotel supervisor knew or should have known that sex trafficking was happening. and didn't report it within 24 hours the first time it happens, they'd be fine $1,000 the second 3,000 and $5,000 every other time during a calendar year. cunningham says this state bill gives local authorities more leverage in the current federal law its models after that only allows a civil recourse for the actual victim and allows a federal criminal prosecution.
6:09 pm
so this tries to fill a gap on the local level and give another another tool for those that want to disrupt trafficking organizations ruth's over tob is the legal services chair with the south bay coalition to end human trafficking. she says provisions that are in the federal law should be included particularly that a person can sue the traffic. and the person who didn't say anything when they knowingly saw the trafficking happen. i'm also concerned that it's only sex trafficking because we do have people that knew or should have known about labor trafficking. cunningham told me that the focus is sex trafficking because that's largely the kind being conducted in hotels. he says that if the bill passes a trafficking victim would then have the federal and state law if they want to take action. this simply gives our district attorneys and our city attorneys another enforcement tool that they previously have not had and san jose zach cuentes abc 7 news what you're about to see might look like a child's toy, but this is the prototype of a six million dollar per mile transportation system.

women are living longer than ever before with kisqali when taken with an aromatase inhibitor or fulvestrant in postmenopausal women with hr+, her2- metastatic breast cancer. kisqali is a pill that's significantly more effective at delaying disease progression versus an aromatase inhibitor or fulvestrant alone. kisqali can cause lung problems, or an abnormal heartbeat, which can lead to death. it can cause serious skin reactions, liver problems, and low white blood cell counts that may result in severe infections. tell your doctor right away if you have new or worsening symptoms, including breathing problems, cough, chest pain, a change in your heartbeat, dizziness, yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, tiredness, loss of appetite, abdomen pain, bleeding, bruising, fever, chills or other symptoms of an infection, a severe or worsening rash, are or plan to become pregnant, or breastfeeding. avoid grapefruit during treatment. ask your doctor about living longer with kisqali. what are you recommending for muscle pain? based on clinical data, i recommend salonpas. agreed...
