masks still be required in the bay area? >> two fishermen rescued. the whereabouts of a third still unknown. sandhya: rising temperatures and possible records. abc 7 news at 11:00 starts right now. >> building a better bay area, finding solutions. this is abc 7 news. dan: one week from tomorrow, more californians will be able to go maskless indoors. governor newsom announcing today the statewide mask mandate will be ending february 15, but what will that mean for the bay area? counties still have to decide whether they will follow the state's lead. we shall see. thank you for joining us. ama: ryan curry got in touch with local health officers tonight and has more details. ryan: california is set to drop its mask mandate. governor newsom tweeted the medical expire next week.

he mentioned cases are down and hospitalizations are stable. >> the bay area is looking good in all metrics. cases are down by more than 60% in the last two weeks. hospitalizations are down which is probably the most important metric. ryan: dr. peter chin-hong says the state is in a mess better spot now -- a much better spot now. >> there are vaccines, boosters and natural immunity together which makes a large force field. ryan: but it is possible masks will still be required in parts of the bay area. as the statewide mandate expires, counties can have mandates of their own. all bay area counties other than marin have a mandate right now. we asked if they will go along with the state's lead. san francisco, alameda and contra costa say they will evaluate cases locally. >> we are still waiting to hear from other counties about their plans, but some businesses are

hoping they just follow the state. >> it causes a lot of frustration, and then try to police it, it is impossible. ryan: adam owns a gym in sonoma. the health officer told the press democrat they are still discussing whether to keep their mandate but he thinks it is time to let it expire. he thinks it will help his business and others recover faster. >> by lifting that mandate, when normalcy will finally return, i'm sure that the demographic that we have lost over the last two years will slowly return. ama: and taking a look at other covid headlines. multiple states are easing mask mandates. now in effect. anyone five years and older needs to be vaccinated to go inside any locations including restaurants, bars and gym. all workers have to show they are boosted.

outlook. j.r. stone has more. j.r.: you are looking at sky seven video showing one of two fishermen being rescued from the rocks along the water at the beach overlook. a third fishermen, a cousin, was swept into the ocean and has not been found. >> the waves just grabbed him and swallowed him. j.r.: he was one of the two rescued in this area. the three had been fishing on the rocks monday afternoon when the waves intensified. he described the moment his cousin jose was struggling in the water and then the moments clothing and jumped into try to save him. he was asking help mep me. s were insanel big and pulling me down as well. i was swallowing a lot of water. i had to save myself. i let him go. >> the coast guard, national

park service and numerous local agencies have been looking but have had no luck in finding jose. >> water temperatures and stuff like that, if you don't have a rescue within the first half-hour, you are not going to have one. j.r.: family members holding out hope. jose's fiancee could be seen standing with park rangers into the evening in hopes of promising news. >> it was really cold. trust me, it was really cold. at that point, i was trying to save my cousin than the water. i tried but there was nothing more i could have done. j.r.: family members say they will be back out here come tuesday morning. the fiancee tells me she understands they were fishing in a dangerous location and is hopeful going forward people do their best to stay out of on save situations. j.r. stone, abc 7 news. dan: oi dramatic video shows a n

crashing a stolen san jose police suv into another suv this afternoon. >> oh! bro! dan: this afternoon right in front of the regional medical center, we are told a man was a patient at the hospital and got into a fight with security. an officer got out of the suv to chase him. the suspect managed to slip into the vehicle and drive off. the man recounted what happened. he was stopped at traffic at the time. >> i was trying to figure out why these cars were not going. sure enough, i see two cop cars coming the opposite direction. i just start recording and i see this cop doing doughnuts swerving. what the heck? dan: two officers suffered minor injuries and the suspect was taken into custody. ama: things will be heating up this week so let's get to sandhya patel with more on this

case was dismissed as an accidental overdose because of his sexual orientation. >> he is asian, gay. when i heard the medical examiner tell me the gay community always uses ghb, very dismissive. dion: this is a complicated case, but this is not a story about the drugs found in his system or the circumstances of where he was found. it is about a family's fight for fairness in the community rallying behind them. the family's chang petition has more than 40,000 signatures. senator scott weiner also wrote this letter asking for sfpd and the m.e.'s support. >> we need to make sure that the community has trust in our government, including the police, medical examiner. parents shouldn't have to

speculate about what happened to their child that has died. dion: no matter the outcome, the family hopes one thing, that his legacy will set an example for others. >> regardless of sexual orientation, he should have an equal investigation as anyone else. dion: and inspire other families of children in the lgbtq community to have a voice. dion lim, abc 7 news. ama: a man is under arrest accused of multiple stocking intalking incidents. on january 29, three female students reported being followed by a gray honda civic as they walked home. the women saw the same car circling the neighborhood and called police. when officers spoke to the suspect, a 26-year-old, he reportedly told them the area was full of women who want him. detectives learned of similar incidents in oakland that happened in september of last year. in one instance, a woman was

reportedly groped. dan: at a hearing today in the scott peterson trial, a juror at the center of his misconduct claims will be granted immunity. the juror is supposed to testify on february 25. if you takes the fifth amendment, the district attorney is prepared to grant herd immunity. peterson's lawyers say that the juror lighted during his selection process when she claims she never been the victim of a crime or involved in a lawsuit. ama: the justice department may be open to allowing so-called safe injection sites where people can openly use drugs. it was evaluating such facilities and talking to regulators. this is a change in stans from the trump administration under which prosecutor successfully fought against a plan to open a safe injection site in philadelphia. the san francisco mayor began the process of possibly opening two sites.

advocates hailed the safe havens as a way to curb overdose deaths. dan: we learned about the first gop candidate who will run against governor newsom this year. the chronicle reports republican state senator brian dolly will announce his candidacy for governor tomorrow. he was first elected to the assembly in 2012 in a heavily republican district which includes reading and grass valley. before that, he served on the glass in county board of supervisors for 16 years. the gubernatorial primary is scheduled for june 7. ama: if you want to lose weight, maybe hit the snooze on your alarm. researchers at the university of chicago took a group of young overweight adults who typically slept less than 6.5 hours and have them sleep two hours more each night. after two weeks, many of those who got the extra sleep decreased their calorie intake by an average of 270 calories and up to 500 calories a day. researchers say eating 270 fewer calories daily would result in the loss of 26 pounds over three years. dan: sleep more, lose weight.
