midday and we are in the upper 60's to mid 70's, even warmer weather comes the next couple of days. reggie? reggie: today's decision day for more than a dozen schools in oakland as the district says it is threatened by budget cuts and low enrollment. the schools could be shrunk, merged, or could be closed. teachers, students and parents believe that the schools in jeopardy are two important -- too important. kumasi: the decision has seen backlash for weeks now. gloror the oakland unified school board is set to vote on the closures today, the district proposing to close, merge or shrink more than a dozen schools to close a budget gap. a small number of parents say they will keep their kids out of school this entire week. parents hope the move gets the e attention of administrators,

because this will cost the -- the district state funding. >> they are trying to close all these schools. we are trying to make oakland great. why are they going against us? gloria: that is one of several actions in oakland around the closures, including some walkouts and also a hunger strike. activists say the closures would disproportionately impact communities in color. the citing lower enrollment and lower funding. we will keep you updated on this crucial vote. kumasi: thank you, and welcome to the morning show. gloria: thank you, it is great to be here. i'm coming from our sister station in raleigh, and i am back home in california. reggie: coming up on our streaming show, we will get to

know gloria a little bit more, so we will do a seven things to know about gloria. it streams right at 7:00, at the end of this show, but you have to download our abc 7 bay area news app or watch us at abc7news.com/live from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m.. kumasi: and this time next week, there will be no more statewide indoor mask mandate, but it is only if you are vaccinated. unvaccinated people will still need to mask up in public and indoor spaces. the mandate will still remain in place on public transportation, regardless of vaccination status, and kids in schools will have to wear masks. parents have been calling on the governor to lift that mandate too. an epidemiologist, dr. george rutherford, says it is best to keep it with vaccination numbers low among those age groups. >> mostly, the downside is not

just infections, but schools get closed and miss out on education and it is disruptive for everyone. kumasi: we have reached out to every local bay area county to see if it plans to drop the mask mandate rules. other counties are still deciding. reggie: across the country, covid cases are declining or stable in every state. several northeast states among the hardest hit ar announcing plans to lift mask mandates in schools. jobina, this is obviously divisive. jobina: the cdc says the recommendation still stands that anyone two years and older should continue to wear masks in public. delaware, connecticut and oregon are planning to end school mask mandates. the governor of new jersey says

he is leaving restrictions up to the school districts. some health professionals say it is too soon to end school mask mandates because vaccination rates are not high enough among the school-age population. >> vaccination rates are the lowest in individuals under age 40. we will see school-based outbreaks at a time at a time when we are trying to return to normal but are actively making decisions that go against that. >> i don't note if kids want to wear the mask, but it is for their own protection. jobina: hospitalizations are down nearly 50% across the nation, with new cases dropping since mid-january. kumasi? kumasi: senator brian dolley is expected to announce his candidacy for governor today. he was first elected to the assembly in 2012 in a heavily republican district that includes reading and grass valley. he was elected to the senate in

2019. he served on the word of super -- county board of supervisors for six years. the gubernatorial vote is set for june 7. reggie: happening today, ann ordinance could get final approval requiring gun owners to have insurance for firearms. this proposed ordinance would require all gun owners to have insurance or face a mandatory fee. the ordinance would go into effect august 8. the national association for gun rights has filed a lawsuit against the city, claiming the new rule is unconstitutional. kumasi: vladimir putin has agreed to a new commitment to not take any new military initiatives around ukraine. this comes after a five hour talk between him and french president emmanuel macron. the standoff is leading to record high gas prices in the u.s. gas prices are rising to the

highest levels in nearly eight years, hitting three dollars $.44 a gallon nationwide. that's eight cents more than last week and nearly a dollar more than it was last year at this time. >> we don't see much relief in the near future, and of crude oil prices continue to rise, the pump prices will likely follow. kumasi: president biden's morning if russia invades, it would mean major economic penalties. he says the u.s. would stop a major pipeline that would bring gas from russia into germany. developing news this morning, facebook's parent company meta may soon have to shut down facebook and instagram across all of europe. this is because of data regulations in that continent preventing metta from storing european personal information on servers that are in america. in a statement, meta says it has no desire to withdraw service from europe, but is

reggie: breaking news now, a pretty big development in the catholic church's sex abuse scandal. we have heard now from retired pope an addict, who has made a statement. it is interesting, what he says -- pope benedict, who has made a statement. it is interesting, what he says and doesn't say. jobina: he stopped short of it -- admitting any personal wrongdoing, but -- while he was archbishop in germany in the 1970's and 1980's. in the letter published today, he says " victims of sexual abuse have mice in the and i have great sorrow for each individual case." benedict has received a lot of criticism for not protecting children in the catholic church, but he also removed 40 priests

for abuse. he also became the first pope to meet with members of sexual abuse. kumasi? kumasi: peterson a new trial. lawyers want to know why juror number seven lied about being the victim of domestic violence. the juror is expected to testify later this month. peterson is convicted of murdering his pregnant wife and their unborn son into thousand four and is now seeking a new trial. reggie: sites, where people can openly use drugs, the geo j told the associated press it was evaluating such facilities and talking to regulators. that is a change from the trump administration. prosecutors from that administration successfully fought against a plan to open a safe injection site in philadelphia.

and see how we do. this is how the week is really shaping up -- the warming trend got underway yesterday and continues for the week ahead. visibility, some fog in the north bay, but elsewhere dealing with clear skies and the typical winter chill as you step outside on this tuesday morning. 35 in san ramon, 37 in palo alto, hayward and the low 40's. these numbers will quickly warm as the sun goes up. here's a bit of a picture from the tam cam. by midday, already into the 60's, above average for this time of year, and it is warm for february. the warmest spots in the 70's and 80's, we will have those numbers in the days ahead. reggie: california moving forward with ending the state indoor mask mandate in one

week. amy hollyfield is live with more. amy? amy: the mask mandate may not be lifted in york county, so don't assume you can walk into these restaurants next week without it -- without a mask. the governor has announced the state mask mandate will be lifted a week from today, so that is for people who are vaccinated when they are indoors. it is up to local county health officials to decide whether to change local rules. so far, the only bay area county that has lifted its indoor mask mandate is marin. we talked to one gym owner in sonoma county who was hoping that county will follow the state guidelines. >> by lifting that mandate, normalcy will finally return. i am sure that the demographic that we have lost over the last two years will slowly return. amy: masks will stilllll

required in schools. the governor did not say when children will get to shed their masks, so they are headed into year three of wearing masks. masks will also still be required on public transportation, but restaurants, bars, gyms, and stores do not have to require them if they are local county officials -- if there local county officials decide to drop those mandates. they are still looking over the guidelines and the numbers and when or if they make a change, they will announce it. reporting live in walnut creek, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. kumasi: multiple states are easing mask mandate. the governors of delaware, connecticut, oregon and new jersey have made announcements recently. all workers have to show they are boosted.

freeway in the last nine months. alameda county sheriff gregory is demanding action on cameras now, and his request is personal. last month, one of his own recruits was shot and killed on 580. >> i want to make a very vocal statement to the state. we will talk to the sheriffs and get some support from the state sheriffs association and work with our loved ones and partners. reggie: they pledged to press governor newsom again for funding cameras. the governor has committed to working with the legislature on that issue. kumasi: happening today in the north bay, marin county is expected to reduce its plan to -- it announced its plan to reduce food waste in landfills. it allows scraps like the banana peel from your morning smoothie to be composted. this is to reduce the amount of organic waste that ends up in landfills. the public is encouraged to

weigh in. reggie: two bay area food banks receiving a shot in the arm. bank of america presented a $150,000 check to the alameda county food bank and will also be donating $60,000 to the san francisco food bank. this is part of a nationwide campaign where they donate money based on how many employees get booster shots. >> not everyone knows where to start volunteering at help out, but this is a great opportunity for them. we are happy everyone stepped up, got their shot and we were able to do this today. reggie: 300,000 meals in the communities served by the food bank, while fighting the pandemic at the same time. kumasi: more smm ta tested positive for covid in the past 22 months combined. this has caused a staffing shortage with delays across the

kumasi: new this morning, president biden is advising americans to leave ukraine over tensions with russia, and there is a glimmer of hope for de-escalation on the ukrainian border. jobina has more. jobina: french officials say vladimir putin has made a commitment to not launch new military commitments around ukraine and to military forces from neighboring belarus. the kremlin is denying the deal, but is confirming that the

troops will leave belarus after military exercises end. president biden is warning russia if it invades ukraine, there will be major economic repercussions, including halting a critical pipeline that will bring gas from russia to germany. >> i have been very straightforward and blunt with president putin, both on the phone and in person. we will impose the most severe sanctions that have ever been imposed. there will be a lot to pay for that down the road. kumasi: shutting down the pipe -- jobina: shutting down the pipeline could be a big blow to the russian and german economies. the state department estimates there are up to 15,000 americans living in ukraine, but the biden administration does not want a chaotic withdrawal with thousands of americans in a country at war. reggie: and dramatic video showing a stolen san jose police

students said a gray honda civic followed them as they were walking home. a few days after tomenaw the same car circling that neighborhood. when officers talked to the suspect, he reportedly told them the area was full of women who want him. detectives learned of similar incidents in oakland that happened last year, and in one instance, a woman was reportedly --. open police -- police are asking for your help to find a suspect in bank robberies over the past weekend. they hope someone will recognize this man. investigators say in all of the robberies, the suspects handed the teller a threatening note after getting the cash, then took off. if you recognize this man, contact the san francisco police department. reggie: for your morning money report, the cofounder of peloton is stepping down as ceo. not just that, the company says it is cutting nearly 3000 jobs.

palatine stock is surging, starting at more than 6% following the news. the ceo has led the compa for years,ut will be stepping back. pe plummeted, but amazon and nike have shown interest in buying the company. and this san francisco business times reports that the company will open gas, athleta, and banana republic stores. this comes as gap has been closing stores in san francisco and nationwide. happening now, vice-president kamala harris and treasury secretary janet yellen are holding a news conference to talk about child tax credits and

earn income tax credits. you should be keeping an eye out for a special irs letter if you are a parent, 60 419, which has to do with advancing child tax credit. and taking a look inside the white house, harris and yellen are urging eligible people to claim their full payments before april 14. speaking of taxes, the irs is dropping its newly announced facial recognition technology that you would have needed to access your tax documents online. the agency was going to allow a third-party company access to taxpayer data. they are dropping it, because privacy advocates and lawmakers were concerned about cyber theft. bitcoin is seeking a big comeback after a brutal january, much like the stock market as a whole. i■tsprice has beenimproving in recent days. the price for one big -- one bitcoin surpassed $45,000 for the first time in a month.

reggie: happening tonight is the start of the jeopardy national college championship. it takes place over nine total nights of hour-long episodes. college students from all over the nation will go head-to-head for the champion title. miami -- the host will put the contestants through their tests. >> the category for final jeopardy -- reggie: four episodes of the tournament will air this week. the winner will be announced february 22, and that person will go home with $250,000. you can see the jeopardy national college championship starting tonight at 8:00 on abc 7. kumasi: a new biopic is in the works, involving the life and music of michael jackson.
