-- >> a group of mothers gathered over the weekend to protest a site that they say may only worsen the crisis. >> there is drug dealing in what is supposed to be a safe place and open drug use in the linkage center. that's what we are protesting. >> she lost her son to an opioid overdose in 2019, a student at sonoma state. she is now part of a group called moms against drug deaths. they decided to speak out against the center after seeing photos like this one, showing

someone using drugs and the site. >> a safe injection site cannot be inside the linkage center. they need to be different topics. >> were checking out the center. >> we were not allowed inside and could not see past the barriers. it opened last month after the mayor cleared a state of emergency in the tenderloin. it is meant to help connect people dealing with drug abuse with short and long-term resources. reporters say it will help addicts recover and clean up the streets but others are skeptical. >> enabling does not help anybody. it does not work. >> this is another mother and her group, she asked us not to show her face as her son is currently addicted to fentanyl and homeless. she stopped bringing him food because she was enabling him.

>> why would i leave if i have food, clothes and the city can do better. they can do better than this. >> we reached out to the city about these concerns. we asked them if they are allowing drug use at the site. we got a statement from the department of public health that suggests they are or they are not stopping people from using drugs. it says in part we are committed to creating a safe and welcoming space for both people who use drugs and people who do not use drugs. because we serve many people who do use drugs, the site allows guests to be observed for for fr while respecting privacy. staffed routinely and respect lay check on people using private spaces such as bathroom facilities. the statement does go on to say that staff do undergo overdose prevention training and have reversed on average three overdoses a week since the site opened three weeks ago. so the city does believe this is

happening -- helping. dan: thank you. we have an update on his door you covered last week about a opposed temporary homeless shelter in san francisco. board of supervisors approved funding for the building in the lower nob hill neighborhood. this hotel, a former youth hostel, will have 123 units and can house to 250 people. it will be operated by a nonprofit group called urban alchemy. it was supposed to open this month but may be delayed. ama: a throng of police responding to reports of a stabbing in san jose. we captured video of several officers at the scene. there were outside a number of businesses including a carl's jr. near 101. both scenes are active in information is just coming in. we know at least one person was severely wounded. developing news with the shooting last friday in oakland

classroom to protest the consolidation plans for 16 schools. they vowed to continue their strike unless six demands are met. >> our first demand at the state level, you want a meeting with governor newsom in oakland. >> the district lodged plans last week to shutter campuses because of unpaid state loans and dropping enrollment. there are 15,000 fewer students in oakland unified than 20 years ago. they are facing a decision to close school sites or face state intervention. >> we got a lot of actions and we hope there listening. 10 days is not enough to talk about the environmental impact, letter known a racial analysis. >> opponents to the closures hope the board will lay boating, one board member has floated a plan to remove seven schools from the closure list. >> they will vote to close some

today restaurant owners and congressional leaders held an event in hopes of helping the industry. karina nova joins us with a push for restaurant rescue funding. >> help restaurant stay open and since the start of the pandemic, california lawmakers estimate nearly a third of state restaurants currently closed. that is where the revitalization fund comes in. it is been providing grants that help restaurants get on their feet and now there's a push to replenish the fund. it has provided about $20 billion in grants to help his owners in the restaurant industry during the pandemic, but with the latest covid surge and a slowdown in business during the winter months, restaurant owners say they are still in need of a financial lifeline to stay open. a bay area congressman is behind the measure. today he held an event to bring attention to the need.

dan: parking in the city. san francisco makes it hard, meeting parking in certain neighborhoods to encourage people to ditch cars and use public transit instead. some residents are using -- asking for a modification to parking laws in their mission. luz pena was there and found residents with thousands of dollars in parking tickets. luz: i spoke to a group of mission bay residents who owe about $4000 in parking tickets combined. some are parents who say they are having to choose between paying for rent, buying food or

paying their parking ticket -- parking tickets. from above, this neighborhood looks like it is thriving with oracle park on one end and -- this is one of the most popular spots. but if you look closer, leaving -- living here comes with a caveat. raise your hand if you have received a citation. while, all of you have gotten tickets. for the past four months, this group of affordable housing residents have been trying to get the attention of city leaders to modify the residential parking rules. >> we got 347 signatures and counting. luz: parking meters that normally cost a dollar 25 jumped to eight dollars an hour during concerts or game days, pushing many of these residents to do this. >have any of you sat sat sat vehicle waiting for the meter time to pass? how many hours? >> like four.

luz: that is a single mom of three who works two jobs to make ends meet. she moved to this complex two years ago and now is in debt. >> like $2800. >> how many citations is that? >> probably five or six. it is too much. the city is ripping me off. luz: evelyn owes about dollars. her constant thought, >> i was afraid of the ticket. luz: all ofkk to building plans. mission bay was built with limited parking options on purpose, pointing to public transit access. >> she says public transit is not reliable for her needs. >> living in the city with three separate ages, you can't really take the bus everywhere.

news. dan: thank you. ama: the santa clara county board of supervisors passed a plan that aims to end family homelessness by 2025. it allocates $75 million of funding to build six new affordable housing to elements in three cities, san jose, sunnyvale and morgan hill. those two elements will add 758 homes for low income community members. it provides $2 million and doubles capacity for four motel stays for families with children. >> the sun is shining. ama: and warming us up. sandhya: when we are talking beach weather in the middle of february, there nothing wrong with that picture. it's not that there any thing wrong with the weather, we just need the storms. i want to show you how warm it got today, eight to 16 degrees above average, 72 in the city. redwood city has not been this

>> building a better bay area, moving forward, finding solutions. this is abc 7 news. dan: today, prosecutorn: today,d sonoma county kicked off weeks of preliminary hearings against pg&e. they pressed criminal charges, blaming them for starting a wildfire in 20 19. if convicted it would add to a lengthy criminal rap sheet for pg&e. ama: includes was in the courtroom today. >> they got off federal criminal probation two weeks ago. now it's back in court, facing criminal charges, and mix of felonies and misdemeanors. it destroyed more than 100 homes, nobody died but it came close. multiple firefighters were

injured and some of the charges involved injuries. pg&e also faces charges for environmental crimes for the smoke emitted by this fire. they have been fighting those charges particularly forcefully, tried to get the judge to toss out the charges before they got to these hearings. they are about establishing whether there is enough evidence for them to go to trial. he showed photographs to the court that showed detail about the broken jumper cable on a big high-voltage transmission tower which calfire found was responsible for starting the fire. they say a cable broke and hit the side of the middle counter, inspiring the sparks. -- the judge ruled t t were similar enough that pg&e is pacifiers can come into this case. he allowed prosecutors to

introduce evidence of pga fires that happened before 2019, before the kincade fire burned. we asked to bring our camera into the courtroom so we could show you what was said and were denied by the judge. i can also tell you that shast t county is watching this case closely. they have similar charges out of the 2020 fire but also four counts of felony and voluntary manslaughter is that fire did claim lives. in sonoma county, abc 7 news. dan: pg&e admits the powerlines sparked the 2019 kincade fire, what they argue any mistakes they made were good faith judgment calls and not crimes. the response stands in contrast to the 2018 camp fire which led them to plead guilty to 85 felonies. a memorial service took place today for stockton firefighter asked fortuna, shot and killed last week while responding to a

fire. there was a procession this morning and friends and family share their memories. his daughter gave a touching speech, saying whenever his people -- whenever people said her dad was a good guy, she would say no, he was the best. a 67-year-old man has been arrested and charged. >> a san francis continue to investigate despite an agreement. this happened after the da investigator said prosecutors pressured her to withhold evidence in a case against an officer. the office was bound by an earlier version of the agreement which did not require the disclosure of all evidence until prosecution was complete. he also wrote we must work together to achieve the reforms san francisco natives have demanded and deserve. >> the family of a missing oakland woman gave an update to search efforts for the 23-year-old. they have been in touch with the
