>> building a better bay area, this is abc7news. dan: after weeks of protests, the night has finally come. the future of several oakland schools could be decided. hundreds of oakland residents have weighed in. the school board meeting is still going on right now. this is a live look as board members consider a proposal that could see several oakland unified schools closed or consolidated. ama: tim johns has been following the meeting's developments all night and joins us live with the latest details. >> that's right. the story has gotten a lot of attention locally in the bay area and even nationwide, sparking everything from weeks

of protests and even a hunger strike. a final vote is still expected this evening, but hundreds of impassioned people showed up during tonight's zoom meeting. the four just voted on one amendment to change the list of schools and when they would close, but it is not a done deal and the discussion is still ongoing. the original proposal called for 16 schools to either close or be consolidated, something that would happen over the course of the next two school years. the oakland unified school district is facing financial hardships because of unpaid state loans and declining enrollment and could face county or state intervention if it doesn't come up with a plan to balance its budget. the district has 80 schools currently. opponents say it would lead to increased class sizes, worsen the quality of education, and hit low income minority students the hardest. proponents say it will benefit all students in the district.

they say they understand the vital role the students -- the schools play in the community and would weigh the pros and cons. protests have happened and teachers even began a hunger strike. parents, students, and teachers all called into be heard. >> i feel like it is a wrong choice and i'm opposed to this decision. >> this plan is terrible. it is a completely awful thing. i feel that do we and other small schools in the area should not be subjected to budget cuts and other negative effects that come with changes in the school system. >> among school board members, tensions at times rose with some proposing to postpone the vote until next january and expressing their frustration over the plan. >> i'm really disappointed and on a personal level and furious that y'all would choose to do this to the community when you

know there is no justification and you see the community's response. >> i mentioned that hunger strike earlier. one of the teachers participating actually was admitted to the hospital earlier today after having not eaten solid food for the past eight days. life in the newsroom, tim johns. dan: it has been an emotional night, thanks very much. we will monitor the meeting overnight and bring you the results of the deliberations on abc 7 mornings, on our website as well. ama: tonight, new details about last week's deadly shooting on. 880 a suspect is facing a murder charge. a former college basketball star was left dead. j.r. stone is following the story and has new details from court documents and reaction from some of jean ransom's closest friends. >> he texted me we were going to get together. i never got the chance because of what happened. j.r.: tears from doug harris,

whose best friend was shot and killed on i-8 80 in oakland last friday. days later, murder charges have been filed against 25-year-old juan garcia of san francisco. those close to the investigation say road rage is likely to blame here. >> i don't know all of the specific details, but this is premeditated murder we are talking about. over what? j.r.: stand out in the 1970's at high school, cal, and university of nevada reno. garcia was driving a black lexus last friday that went onto the shoulder of the fast lane to get side-by-side with ransom's honda. garcia fired a single shot that killed ransom, striking him in the head. >> i'm hurt, i'm shocked. we were always teammates, we looked out for each other.

i wish i was there to look out for him at that particular time. j.r.: he played basketball with ransom and was his former roommate. he wants garcia prosecuted to the full extent of the law, but also wants this to be a learning moment in the community. >> these young people need help. it is senseless. a 25-year-old kid. he would have spent the last 25 years of his life coaching them and trying to teach them away from gun violence. j.r.: garcia is expected in court wednesday. dan: let's move onto something different and turn our attention to this unseasonably warm weather this week. sandhya patel is tracking it. very strange. sandhya: indeed. it is going to make you wonder if it is winter, but the calendar has not changed. we are still in winter. elevated fire danger coming up. record winter warmth.

for a man swept into the ocean at muir beach has turned into a recovery operation. his fiancée showed these pictures with us. she said he moved to san francisco from honduras when he was 15 and was studying biotechnology. tomorrow would have been his 29th birthday. he was with two other men fishing on the rocks when a wave knocked them into the water. the two men were rescued. the coast guard was searching for him this morning, but called it off. dan: the deadly stabbing of a man today in san jose is the first homicide of the year there. sky 7 captured video of several officers at the scene. it happened near a carl's jr. restaurant near highway 101. the victim ended up at a nearby gas station. police spent about three hours collecting evidence and say they are still gathering information. ama: developing news in covid headlines. you may still have to wear a

ama: surveillance video shows a rather determined suspect breaking into a berkeley market saturday morning. the owners shared it with us. a man using various tools to try to pry the door open.

aggressive during mating season. they can charge after people sometimes. my understanding is that is a combination of that. >> a combination that fish and wildlife says is driving a new partnership to address the growing population. nasa and the u.s. department of agriculture working to trap and relocate the birds. it is all action that could be proved to be easier said than done. >> turkeys are quick, they are more agile than you think they would be. they are probably smarter than you think they would be. they are not easy to track. >> but they are easily noticeable. one visitor said the wild turkeys stood out. >> they are huge. [laughter] they are huge and there are a lot of them. i drove past them and they kind of stared me down. >> relocating wild animals is not something fish and wildlife does often. they typically try to stay away from doing so as it can be problematic. >> in this example, we are going

to have to disease test all these turkeys. we would never want to take wildlife and relocate it and make it somebody else's problem. >> ness ames says while the turkeys post minimal impact to the nasa community, a statement read that this protects the turkeys and their workforce. the plan is to review -- relocate them to the ecological reserve east of mount hamilton. in mountain view, amanda del castillo. dan: in the east bay, the building where the black panther movement again is one step closer to being redeveloped. the city's landmarks board yesterday supported the plan for a 20-unit apartment building at the sight of the black panthers first headquarters on martin luther king jr. way. an oakland resident who watched rallies held outside the building says it is part of history. >> i wouldn't believed having it down would be a good thing. this is really where it started from.

predominantly deaf cast to be nominated for best picture. >> i feel extremely blessed. i've been on such a long journey. >> the man who plays the father in the movie is the first deaf male oscar nominee in a supporting role. >> it is such a blessing that hollywood will begin to recognize deaf talent and increase their deaf awareness and i hope it changes their perspective. we have our own language and culture. >> that seckman and told by many right here in the bay area community. i got to speak with the california school for the deaf in fremont. >> i have two boys who are both codas who live in my house with me and our culture. >>'s interpreter also a child of a deaf adult. >> it was great to see as a coda myself, there is not a lot of representation. we are kind of in the middle of both worlds.

high-pressure building in. the wind clockwise around that high. that offshore flow dragging the warm air down and with that air flowing this direction, we are basically drying out the atmosphere, so heightened fire weather concerns are coming up. let's go hour-by-hour. 7:00 a.m. tomorrow, you are noticing yellow to orange, high to very high fire danger in the north bay. that is going to be the general focus. the winds are not terribly strong. it is the direction of the wind that tends to dry out the air. when you count 30, 45 days since our last measurable rain and a drought, this is concerning. hawkeye, 35 mile per hour winds. remain aware. those winds will pick up again. going into thursday morning, 25-30 miles or our. the offshore winds is what is going to bring us warmth. 8 to 16 degrees above average.

73 in santa rosa. san jose, 72 in livermore. if you want to go to the beach, it is a beautiful view from santa cruz. mild to warm weather is expected with moderate uv index. 70 at ocean beach. 68 at stinson. risk of rip currents and sneaker waves, so watch out for that. it is a beautiful view. moderate air quality the next four days. as we look at another equally stunning view from our emeryville camera, warmer than i few days, records are liking with the warmth easing. this is one of our wettest months. we should be seeing rain. instead, we are talking about warmth. 40's and 50's as we head toward tomorrow morning, upper 30's to the mid-50's. afternoon highs in the south bay on the warmer than average side by a good 10 to 20 degrees for parts of the bay area.
