mask mandate is lifted for public places if you are fully vaccinated. but one bay area county is making an exception. santa clara county is the only local county requiring you to keep the masks on. health officer dr. sarah cody says transmission is still too high. they expect to drop the mandate sometime next month. as for the rest of the bay area, masks for fully vaccinated people will no longer be needed in places like restaurants and grocery shops. it still applies in schools, hospitals, and on other -- other transit. reggie: and other states are rolling back mandates as well, from the state, local, and federal level, people are left a little confused. jobina: new york state is leaving the decision up to local officials, but the cdc stands by its guidance, that most

americans should mask up indoor public spaces and schools. she says transmission is still high, although cdc is working on recommendations to ease restrictions safely, the mixed messages are causing some confusion. >> remember, the cdc is making national guidance and states have different stages of the pandemic, so some states may make decisions that artis -- are specific to them, while the cdc is trying to provide guidance for the entire country. jobina: meanwhile, the federal governmentrein the first 10 million doses of the first under five pfizer vaccine, which is ready to go as soon as the fda gives the final signoff. the cdc tells abc news there will be plenty of supply for vaccines for children in the age group. pfizer is going to meet to

authorize the under five vaccine tuesday. kumasi: the bart bkumasi: the ba an update on how the system is faring during the pandemic. a surge of the omicron variant may have peaked a couple weeks ago in the bay area, but when it comes to bart, the effects will be felt for years. ridership is still way down, especially when compared to the bay area in other parts of the country, and recovery could take years. lori rodriguez is here with a crucial bart meeting today. gloria: good morning. they will be presented with post-pandemic ridership projections, taking a big dip due to the omicron surge. ridership was trending up compared to december 20 of 2021, but take a look at this. this is still 25% of the pre-pandemic level. i went through the presentation the board will be seeing today. ridership is projected to go up to just below 60% of the pre-pandemic level in 2024, and

and traffic was almost stopped for about 40 minutes. now that everything is open, things are moving, but miles per hour, and there is a very large backup. that's the picture overhead from sky seven. i want to quickly mention, if you are traveling towards the san mateo bridge, we have a new crash causing a slowdown on southbound 880. kumasi: and it seems the city of tampa, florida may have a scooter mystery on its hands. 52 scooters were pulled up from the bottom of the local river. they also found wheelchairs, bikes, traffic cones and fishing line. the same group pulled up 67 scooters from a 300 yard stretch of the river wall. reggie: california taking tesla to court. the lawsuit alleging what happened inside its fremont

reggie: new details into the investigation of the sudden death of bob saget. one month after he was found dead at the ritz-carlton in orlando, his family announced that he actually died from head trauma. here are details on what this all means. >> we now know what killed actor bob saget. his family revealing he died from head trauma in a florida hotel room last month. saget's family said authorities determined he accidentally hit the back of his head on something, thought nothing of it, and went to sleep. no drugs or alcohol were involved. experts say head injuries can be deadly if not treated. >> if someone has had a head injury, they need to make sure other people know about that and keep an eye on how the person is acting. >> the night before saget died,

the 65-year-old performed a comedy show. when his family did not hear from him, they requested a wellness check and on january 9, his family found him responsive and not breathing. he was faceup in bed with his left arm across his chest, his right arm resting on the bed. there was no evidence of drug use or foul play. brain injuries do not always produce visible trauma and if it's not clear saget had underlying health conditions, this can occasionally result in this outcome. >> if they have a small bleed, it can be serious or deadly. >> tosha richardson died similarly in 2009, after hitting her head while skiing. shortly after, she was rushed to the hospital and days later was removed from life support. >> we are still a family.

now is when we really need to stick together. >> saget was best known for his role on "full house" and went on to host america's funniest home videos. his family said they wanted america to hear how he died from them first. kumasi: we are getting an exclusive look inside the new san francisco homeless shelter opening in nob hill next month. final touches are underway. the $18 million plan was approved on tuesday and it is set to open next month, housing about 250 people. the co-owner of the nonprofit running this site says a sought like this is too good to pass up. >> once people get stable, that's when they can begin to heal. kumasi: neighbors say the building has one big flaw, there is no outdoor space, so they are concerned this is leading to -- this will lead to

reggie: we want to get you an update on that extremely river -- rare fire burning in laguna beach. there are no evacuation orders in place and the pacific highway is now closed, several schools in the area are closed as well. drew: look at this. we are in the middle of february and we are talking about a wildfire in southern california? there -- they are under a wind wand asou can see, as go thrghe morning, the will not let up. we are tracking wind close to 40 miles per hour in parts of l.a. county and the wind will continue through much of the day. it's not only the winds that are a factor, today is their hottest day. they are growing near 90 degrees, some spots hit 93 this afternoon, and just like us, southern california has not seen

rain in more than a month. the vegetation is extremely dry and we are under a santa ana wind event there, and hot temperatures. we will keep an eye on this, but this is unusual for this time of year, guys. kumasi: thank you, drew. developing news, tesla is being sued for systemic racial discrimination and harassment. tesla revealed the lawsuit around the same time it was filed yesterday. the wall street journal reports the state received hundreds of complaints from workers, who say tesla's fremont factory is a segregated place where black workers are subjected to racial slurs and discrimination. tesla is denying these accusations in a blog post, saying the state is supply tesla with the factual evidence of this lawsuit. late last year, a san francisco

into berkeley, so you will have a slow ride traveling from the east bay into san francisco. if you want to consider the san mateo bridge as an alternate, there is an issue on southbound 880 at wynton, so unless you are traveling northbound on 882 the san mateo bridge, you might as well just wait in this backup, reggie. reggie: appreciate the advice. the state guidelines for masking are changing this week. all counties plan to drop the indoor mask mandate if you are vaccinated, except if you live in santa clara county. schools, hospitals, public transit facilities are not affected by the rule change, you are required to wear a mask there regardless of vaccination status. let's check in with amy hollyfield, who is live with reaction to this. amy: good morning to you. see this sign in the friend's bookstore in pleasant hill? it can come down next week. it doesn't have to, the

businesses can ask you to wear a mask, but they will not be required to force you to wear a mask in most bay area counties starting next week. all bay area counties except santa clara are following a state guideline next week, they will be lifting that indoor mask mandate for people who are vaccinated. in public places, you will be able to go in without a mask. have heard some support from this plan and also some hesitation. >> i am glad we are finally going to have that opportunity. i think it will be somewhat of a relief. i will be able to see people's faces again, you know what i mean? it's exciting. >> i think it's good timing. i think it will only be good for us, to get back to a normal, pre-covid time where we can refresh and do our own thing. >> i think it's a little too soon. there are children under five that cannot vaccinated, children under 12 cannot have a booster. spring break is coming, which

will probably cause another uptick in coronavirus cases. amy: some health officials will say they recommend you continue to wear your mask indoors, but it will no longer be required and they feel like they can drop the mandate now. the number of cases and the number of people in the hospitals have dropped significantly since the january peak of this omicron variant. masks will still be required in all counties, in schools, hospitals, and on public transportation. reporting live in pleasant hill, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. reggie: and we can expect a covid endemic plan for california and possible new mask guidelines for schools. >> we have been working for weeks with our education partners. there are 1050 school districts in california, 10,500 plus schools. everyone has strong opinions and we are getting closer and closer to getting a public announcement on mask wearing in our public

schools. reggie: governor newsom was in oakland yesterday, where he gave a covid update and signed a bill to increase covid sick leave. workers are now required to get as much as two weeks paid time off if they get covid. this is covered retroactively until january 1 -- from january 1. kumasi: the vaccination stanatis of excellence would require 95% of passengers and crew to be fully vaccinated and boosted. the program is optional, but they will let theinion status o. cruising right now.sing people reggie: and educators could strike. this comes after the school board decided to move forward with school closures. several schools are set to close this year, followed by five more next year. several others will merge or

lose grades. the decision was called "excruciating." students and families that affected school will get priority support and priority enrollment at any campus. >> we wanted to be intentional about insuring this is going to improve student outcomes. reggie: oakland unified is facing a $90 million budget shortfall. the county or state could intervene if the budget is not balanced. kumasi: students from los altos high school in santa clara county walked out in solidarity with students, parents and teachers in oakland. about 150 students marched down san antonio avenue to el camino royale, where they held a demonstration yesterday afternoon. the idea started during a conversation about civics in a

senior class. >> the government needs to reallocate some of that huge budget surplus to keep schools open in black and brown neighborhoods. reggie: prices are soaring across the country, from groceries to cars, and new economic numbers just released show inflation at its highest pace since 1982. jobina has a long list of the january consumer price index report, and it shows us we are paying high prices. jobina: i am sure when you hear this list, you will relate on so many levels. inflation rose by 7.5% year-over-year in january, to a new 40 year high. the consumer price index is important because inflation is seen as a direct trigger for the federal reserve's interest rate hikes. federal reserve chairman, jerome powell, has indicated the fed will fight inflation by raising interest rates, starting with a

quarter-point hike coming next month. many economists expect the fed to raise interest rates several times this year. we have all seen the effects of inflation since december 2020. the price of a pound of bacon is up by more than one dollar, one dozen eggs up 21%, a sirloin steak up two dollars. those food prices could jump another 5% to 6% this year. it's not just grocery bills that are eating into families budgets, nationwide, gas prices are up 50% from last year, the new average car price is up $6,000 compared to a year ago, and car insurance is up 6% to 7%. many economists expect inflation to peak by march. reggie: and the trial underway today. new worry about what some italian police wanted is retaliation. kumasi: and live at the big

where we should be the middle of february. 78 in san jose, 80 in oakland, 80 in santa rosa, 86 in napa and 76 degrees in concord as well. a warm day across the entire region. we have a beach hazard statement in effect until 7:00 p.m. today, so if you are headed to the coast, be aware of that. the northwest swell is six to eight feet, so be aware. the ocean water temperature is around 54 degrees. warmer across the state today and tracking that fire in laguna beach and southern california, a hot afternoon near 90 degrees in l.a.. jobina, how are we looking on the bay bridge right now? jobina: it is looking better, but definitely not great. we will get to sky seven so you can see the issue unfolding. around 5:20, we had a multi car crash reported on the bay bridge that cleared shortly after 6:00 a.m. and caused a lot of damage in terms of the backup for your

commute. speeds are picking up once you travel through the metering lights, around 30 miles per hour traveling into san francisco. the problem is the backup has extended into emeryville and berkeley. to give you an alternate, if you live in san leandro or san lorenzo and take the bay bridge, i would suggest traveling to the san mateo bridge. the stall we are following on southbound 880 at wynton has cleared, so now you will be able to get to the san mateo bridge much faster and be able to travel all the way around. i would suggest it, because it does not look like it is during, and the san mateo bridge looks slow traveling towards the peninsula. if you are not con con the short story is that traffic has been rough this morning for anyone traveling from the east

reggie: our friends at k bc in l.a., this is the fast-moving fire and southern california. there are currently some evacuation orders and recommendations in the laguna beach area. high winds, very dry conditions are driving this fire. the pacific coast highway is now closed, and you can see how close those flames are coming to these densely packed cul-de-sacs there. we will continue to watch it as the morning moves on. reggie: unappealing -- kumasi: an appeals trial is set to continue in rome, for two american teenagers accused of killing an italian police officer. jobina: according to italian media, several members of italy's police force was calling for the debts or beatings of the teens in the hours after the officer's death.
