california committee -- community of whittier. it started as a brush fire the second mark canha area and then raced up to the east comes this afternoon. helicopters were called in and that is helping firefighters keep it from spreading even faster and farther. >> in the bay area there are also fire concerns because of the warm weather. >> we also saw a record-breaking temperatures. for the details, let's go to sandy. >> it felt more like summer in the bay area then winter. let me show you alive picture from the santa cruz camera. this is gorgeous. people are out at the beach. we have four records. redwood city has surpassed of this record. san jose, six degrees warmer than the previous record. oakland, downtown, 79. sfo, 78 degrees, shattering the previous record of 72. you can see how warm it is.

many areas are in the 70's and 80's. half moon bay has started to cool at 66 degrees. here is what brought us the warmth. the gusty offshore winds. the concern is it is so dry. this is the 34th day without measurable rain. you combine the two and the fire danger is elevated. i will let you know what the weekend holds, coming out. -- coming up. >> this rare winter heat wave continues. how people are reacting to it. >> i am still pretty warm it has been a pretty busy day. all of this dry and warm weather has brought a long line of dirty cars here to get clean. other people were looking for a swimming pool. firefighters remain concerned about the danger.

this warm weather is almost unsettling. there is a new word for it. >> for me, it is a little warm. the santa rosa pickle ball court's were warming up on this weird february day. >> it is odd and you get sunburned because you have been in sweaters and all of a sudden it is hot. 80's hot. and for many it was time to hit the pool. >> this is very bizarre but we are loving it but it is very bizarre. the family aquatics complex is open year-round but lately lots of swimmers are showing up, anxious to jump in and cool off. >> we were underneath the shelter or a raincoat or a jacket, braving the elements to make sure the pool is safe. right now, we are making sure the left cars have a hat on and some sunscreen. >> the weather was so warm, there might be a new word for it. a combination of delightful and nightmare. delight mayor -- delightmare.

we found the word. >> more than a month without rain is increasing fire danger by the day. fire responded to this small wildfire off highway one on wednesday. the fire we had on the coast yesterday, it was just unheard of in february on the coast. if we don't get additional rain, it will certainly be problem attic. they tweeted this reminder to be prepared. always have two ways out and have your emergency go-bag trapped in case you have to evacuate. meantime, the pool is calling many. >> don't you want to put your suit on and come in? >> so tempting not to jump in. the weather is so warm and so concerning that some fire departments may begin up staffing for spring and summer earlier than usual. others just trying to enjoy our

warm and beautiful weather even though it might be a delight mare. >> i like that. when we get weather like this, one of the first things we think of is going to the beach. that is a lot of fun. there are dangerous conditions in many of our bay area beaches to be aware of. dustin dorsey has that story. >> sunshine, blue skies. around 70 degrees. would you believe me if i told you this was february and santa cruz? this is chamber of commerce weather. >> no shortage of people who flocked to the beach to enjoy a great day on the coast, either you were hanging out, hanging 10 or hanging around. >> we could not have picked a better day to be out here. >> the beach was surprisingly less crowded.

the real action was at the point where people lined up to take in the views of dozens of surfers taking advantage of near-perfect conditions and big waves. >> i am so thankful. i don't know if it is a miracle, global warming, times are changing, it is like 85 degrees, waves are barreling. heaven on earth. these are great conditions for surfers but there is a looming risk in the water for bay area swimmers looking to cool off up and down the coast. the national weather service has issued a hazard statement for multiple bay area communities, warning of dangerous waves and rip currents. the harbor patrol will be on high alert with more visitors coming to town. we do our normal patrols and the lifeguards have been out to keep everybody safe. last year we did respond to three fatalities on the north coast. in all of those cases, it was people who just got too close. >> the best advice is don't turn

pediatrician offices as soon as february 2 first. the advisory committee is set to discuss the vaccine on tuesday. >> a new study finds covid survivors face lasting heart risks. military veterans infected with this even a year earlier faced a 72% higher risk of heart failure than those who were never infected. >> more than 912 thousand americans have died from covid, dealing with grief is difficult for surviving family members, especially for children. now efforts are underway both nationally and in the bay area to provide those children with much-needed needed mental health care. david louis shows us what santa clara county hopes to do. >> covid debts have taken the lives of spouses, siblings and children. an estimated 167,000 children under age 18 lost a mother or a father or an extended family member who was the primary caregiver. that is more than one out of

every 450 children in the u.s. according to a new report called hidden pain. patricia alonso has has counseling these children in san jose who have developed serious issues. >> they seem very isolated. they feel a little depressed. they have lost focus in school. the productivity in school is decreasing. it is a result of this tragic lost. -- loss. >> we have data that tells us that children are 21-23 times more likely to access mental health services if they are available on their school campuses. >> $10 million is available to o provide services to these children. the proposal does not preclude partnerships with community groups with the long history of

counseling with language and cultural specific expertise. like and hispanic children lost caregivers. >> school-based services are obsolete. that puts limits on how much they can do this. since we know that family is so important, we need to be able to leverage all of the support that has existed. the proposal goes both -- goes before the board of supervisors tuesday. in san jose, david louis, abc 7 news. >> keeping california's state of emergency in place at least for now. the order was issued by governor newsom nearly two years ago. it is set to expire the end of next month. this morning, republican legislators added on the steps of the capital calling for the end to the emergency declaration now. >> the question needs to come right back at him. why have you not ended the emergency? that is what it is about. you are hosting the super bowl

>> san bruno is set to close to make way for a tech mega campus. alexandria real estate bought them offer $95 million. that is according to san mateo county records. it would be converted into a massive office and research complex. tenants will include tech companies and advanced technology firms. a closing date for the mall has not been announced. >> a two bedroom two bath condo

is getting massive demand for potential first time homebuyers. the price is a rare bargain. $260,000. applications for it have been flooding in. zack went as has more on the background behind the highly sought after price. >> this is part of the mixed-use housing development here. so far, is the only one of its kind because of the asking price. that price is the below-market price housing program. they passed a law that required a lot of them to require minimum percentage units. they have to meet certain criteria. they have to meet the qualifications for what the town considers first-time buyers. they have to earn 80% of the median income or less and if they need that criteria and some more, they submit an application

that would be drawn lottery style. this would give them a better chance of wedding. they administer afford by housing and are selling the unit. they are telling the mercury news that anyone applicant's have applied and more are expected before the window to apply closes on the 15th. we spoke with the town community development director who is not available for an interview but they did say that conversations are being looked at to potentially bring more affordable housing to the area. zach went as, abc 7 news. >> there has has has has has explosion and fire at a homeless and cam. the mayor hopes the declaration will include this county to help sausalito with extra resources. the city declared a waterfront encampment on authorized and moved residents to a new location.
