♪ tonight we take you to the intense trucker protest over vaccine mandates in canada. it started in ottawa, but it's now disrupting other cities and commerce, costing the auto industry millions. the truckers say they are staying put, regardless of the

costs. and they have plenty of supporters, at home and in the u.s. here's "nightline's" ashan singh. >> this is what it's all about, love and generosity. we want for nothing here. people bring us food every day. i gained weight. seriously. the hot food, chili soups, sausages yesterday. people are doing this out of love. and thankfulness for what we're doing here. >> reporter: it's a protest that at times feels like a tailgate. ♪ life is a highway ♪ >> reporter: several hundred truckers forming a blockade in ottawa, the capital of canada, rallying against covid-19 mandates. >> this is not french. the people that come down here from everywhere. this is the majority. >> reporter: thousands have joined the so-called freedom convoy. 400 vehicles parked in the red zone around parliament. ottawa's downtown paralyzed with traffic, noise, and rowdy protesters. >> we're fighting for freedom!

we're going to keep fighting! >> reporter: now entering its third week, the standoff is at a standstill. protesters saying they'll stay out here until all canada's covid restrictions are lifted. earlier this week the mayor of ottawa declaring a state of emergency. police threatening to arrest anyone caught bringing gas and other supplies to the truckers. so far, at least 25 arrests have been made. >> we have 126 active criminal investigations, and we have over 408 incidents that have been reported to our hotline, all of which are being investigated. >> reporter: canadian prime minister justin trudeau calling the protesters a small fringe minority and blaming the conservative party for enabling the blockades. >> we understand how important it is to put an end to these barricades. we understand how important it is for people to get their lives back, to get their livelihoods back. >> i talk to you, fearless leader justin. >> reporter: the occupation sparked by a covid-19 vaccine requirement for truckers crossing the u.s./canada border

implemented in january. why was it important to show up at this protest? >> no choice. the mandates do not provide choice. >> if you're not vaccinated, you can't participate in society. you can't go to restaurants, you can't go to the theater. it's a lot of coercion and it just makes me mad, and i've had enough. i'm not taking it anymore. >> reporter: andy wing is an i.t. professor currently on leave without pay. his brother-in-law, mark, has been a truck driver for over 30 years. both refuse to get vaccinated. some locals in ottawa hail andy, mark, and other protestrs as heroes. >> changing the course of history. changing lives. >> what was the straw that broke the camel's back for you guys and decided to get you guys out there? >> we were all unhappy about the lockdowns and the negative impact on everybody. our kids, our grandchildren. >> for the truckers, when you start saying you can't work anymore, you can't cross the border action, you know, you can't stop trade just for a mandate that is not necessarily protecting anyone. >> we're tired of hearing from justin trudeau, "don't worry, we

got your back." he doesn't got our back. the only back he's got is his own. >> food storage, a tv, dvd player -- >> reporter: truckers are uniquely positioned to wait this out. their cabs designed for living on the road for long stretches of time. >> we're going over two weeks now. if the police, if local officials, were able to cut off gas, how long do you think you'd be able to last out there? >> we're here till we get the results we're looking for. >> it doesn't matter. i don't care, i'm not leaving. >> people have thought been able to go home. factories have slowed production. is this the end goal? >> i understand people have got to work, and they want to go home. i don't want to -- i'm not here to stop people from working. but the market has slowed down because of this pandemic. it's already slowed down before. so you can't blame it all on the convoy. >> reporter: some living inside the protest area complaining of being harassed. others even afraid to leave their homes to go to work. >> when you don't work, you're working $15 an hour, you miss a shift, you can't pay your rent. >> i think that definitely it's been pretty disruptive to the

community. >> reporter: across canada, there are now several spinoff demonstrations. causing three critical points of entry between the u.s. and canada to be closed or clogged with traffic. including the ambassador bridge, a lifeline from detroit into windsor. the blue water bridge between port huron and sarnia. and the coutts crossing connecting montana to alberta. some idling 12 hours. >> like everyone you see here, they're waiting, they'r tired, they want to go home, them to see their families. >> reporter: factories on both sides of the border already feeling the impact of the choked supply chain. general motors in michigan canceling three shifts due to a shortage of parts. ford running a few canadian plants at reduced capacity. >> this industry employs over 100,000 canadians, and every hour that a plant goes down impacts canadian jobs. >> reporter: the canadian trucking alliance estimates 85% to 90% of the 120,000 canadian

truckers who drive cross-border routes are vaccinated. and that it appears many of the ottawa protesters have no connection to the trucking industry. >> a lot of the people in the convoy want to create another version of january 6th that happned in the states. that's what these folks want to do. unelected committee, established by their own whim, replacing the elected officials. it's clear that their goals are nefarious and unhelpful and don't represent what canadians want. >> reporter: singh is a member of parliament, leader of the new democratic party. he believes that the protests have escalated in part due to outside forces. citing various fund-raising efforts, including a gofundme page that raised close to $8 million for the movement, before being shut down by the website which cited "evidence from law enforcement that the previously peaceful demonstration had become an occupation." and gofundme supports peaceful protests and we believe that was th intention of the freedom condo i 2022 fund-raiser when it was first created."

>> are you saying the protest has been hijacked in any way? >> i think from the beginning the roots of this protest were never to raise the concerns of the majority of truckers. so it's clear that they're also getting their funds from foreign funders. >> how do we actually prove that? >> well, there was some investigative journalism that uncovered a significant number of the donors that were american. >> reporter: what's happening in canada is inspiring similar action around the world. dozens of trucks left the southern town of nice, france, headed for paris as part of their own freedom convoy. in wellington, new zealand, police in the country's capital arrested over 100 protesters blocking streets there. and in the u.s., the department of homeland security saying yesterday it received reports of a truck convoy potentially planning roadblockages ahead of this weekend's super bowl. calling those plans aspirational because the event is only being discussed online, noting that this could change quickly. some american politicians

voicing support for the canadian protesters. >> i think the canadian truckers are standing up not just for the freedom of canadians but for the freedom of americans. >> reporter: the u.s. is coming to terms with a dizzying range of new covid rules. varying state by state, city by city. several states announcing measures to mostly lift mask mandates. some states making exceptions in places like schools. >> has to be the most common question i get asked in the state of new york. i think you know. when are school masks coming off? >> reporter: adding to the confusion, the biden administration remains cautious. with white house press secretary jen psaki telling reporters that they still advise masking. >> as the federal government, we have the responsibility to rely on data, on science, on the medical experts. that's something the president committed to during the campa campaign. they confirmed during this briefing, they are continuing to evaluate. >> reporter: as the world enters the third year of the pandemic and the convoy its third week,

exotic, a former oklahoma zookeeper who's now serving a 21-year sentence for a murder for hire plot against her. so many of us were tweeting, debating, and even dancing over the success of the series. through it all, one voice was largely silent. the tiger king himself. until now. >> is this juju? >> this is she, is this joe? >> this is joe. >> reporter: last month, joe, whose real name is joseph maldonado passage, was resentenced, dropping a year off the now 21 years in prison he has to face for murder for hire counts and for the killing and selling of tigers. during his trial, it was alleged that he paid $3,000 to a hitman to travel from oklahoma to florida to murder carole baskin, who runs big cat rescue in florida. in a wide-ranging interview, he maintained his innocence and vowed to appeal, hoping to submit a 200-page motion for a new trial as early as this week.

full-grown tigers and lions at a time. do you think if i abused them they would allow that? >> reporter: the buzz generated from "tiger king's" massive success even sparked new interest in a cold case. the disappearance of carole baskin's ex-husband, don lewis. one theory in the series? >> she fed her husband to the tigers. >> reporter: it's a claim baskin has repeatedly denied. authorities have not identified any suspect in lewis' disappearance and his body has not been found. ♪ circle of life ♪ >> reporter: despite this, baskin would find herself returning to the spotlight in 2020, competing on "dancing with the stars." >> the cast would tell me to be fierce and to be strong and to roar. >> roar! >> if you had a chance to say something to carole baskin now, what would you say? >> what would i say? i am in prison, and she can't leave me alone. what would i like to say? carole, go find another reason to live other than joe exotic. because enough is enough.
