we'll begin with the fallout over that stunning inflation number. prices up 7.5% compared to one year ago rising at the fastest rate in four decades. mary bruce has the latest. good morning, mary. >> reporter: good morning, george. yeah, these rising prices are touching nearly every corner of american life from cars to groceries, furniture and gas and not just services rising. in addition to goods, you're see rent rising as well, prices jumping 7.5% since this time last year. that is the fastest pace in 40 years. american families are feeling it in a very real way, spending $275 more per month. now, these rising costs, of course, are being driven by supply chain issues caused by the pandemic and americans who have been saving are now outspending, driving prices up and driving up demand. one of the reasons why the fed may take steps to raise interest rates to try to slow demand, george, and tamp down soaring prices. >> of course, this rising inflation is a real political threat to president biden and the democrats in the midterm elections. >> reporter: george, this is a very real political liability for the president, especially if

americans are still feeling this pinch come the midterms. biden is trying to project optimism saying he expects prices to taper over the course of the year, and most economists do agree. the president acknowledges soaring prices are causing in his words real stress at the kitchen table. now, the white house and officials here are quick to note that wages are also up, but, of course, not enough to make up for these rising costs and the president is now promising an all hands on deck approach. he's continuing to push for these social spending plans of his to try to bring down the cost of things like prescription drugs and child care. but, george, as you well know, these policies face a real steep uphill battle on the hill, especially as we see inflation continue to go up. >> no question about that. mary bruce, thanks. sunday on "this week" i'll have two exclusives, speaker of the house nancy pelosi and republican lindsey graham. cecelia? we turn to the other top story, tensions on the ukraine/russia border rising. president biden now issuing a new travel advisory and telling americans in ukraine they should depart immediately warning, quote, things could go crazy quickly.

terry moran right there. and, terry, we are just learning key talks between russia and ukraine have now failed. >> reporter: that's right. it's a grim day here, cecilia. that stark warning from the president of the united states that americans here in ukraine should leave now and that the u.s., he added, will not be able to evacuate them if war breaks out. all that makes it very real for the estimated 10,000 to 15,000 americans who are living here in ukraine. we've been talking to americans here and right now for all the tension, life still seems normal. people are going to work. the kids go to school. everything is open. a young teacher saying he has a life here, a job, a girlfriend. this is his home, but that feeling could change very fast as the situation continues to deteriorate. more russian warships today heading into the black sea and they will be joining what will effectively be a naval blockade of ukraine while massive military exercises between russia and belarus are going on

just a few miles north of the ukrainian border here. but the really bad news today, the news off the diplomatic front. those big talks in berlin -- ukraine, russia, france, and germany just collapsing after nine hours of negotiation. they couldn't even agree to issue a joint statement that any progress might have been made and more ominously no further date -- no date for further negotiations has been set. so it does feel like the window for a peaceful solution here and for americans here to get out safely is closing. michael? >> a lot of tension there, terry, thank you so much. now to iran, as the u.s. warns that the regime is just weeks away from acquiring enough fuel to make a nuclear weapon. the u.s. is now back at the table for high-stakes talks. let's go to our chief global affairs correspondent, our anchor, martha raddatz on the ground in tehran for us this

morning. good morning, martha. >> reporter: good morning, michael. iran may be in the middle of negotiating a nuclear deal with the united states, but this morning, it's all about death to america. this morning, on the streets of tehran and in the sky, celebrations saluting the 43rd anniversary of the islamic revolution, but the message was the same -- down with america. iran's new more hard-line president ebrahim raisi marking the day with a defiant tone denouncing the west. just this week, iran unveiling its newest long-range missile, claiming it can evade detection while easily striking israel and u.s. bases in the region but playing out behind closed doors, negotiations over iran's ever growing nuclear program, now in a race against the clock, the white house warning the country is just weeks away from having enough fuel for a nuclear bomb although analysts say it would take at least another year to produce the weapon itself and

then they'd have to test it. the biden administration working for months to resurrect an obama era agreement scrapped by former president trump who thought instituting crippling economic sanctions would push iran to cut a better deal. inflation rates soaring over 40%. the people of iran are feeling the crunch. but its leadership so far showing no signs of yielding. the white house does think there is a possibility they will get a deal but a senior administration official told me he thinks it's about a 50/50 chance. michael? >> martha, how much fuel does the united states think they have? >> reporter: enough to make a nuclear bomb if they decide to make a nuclear bomb. and as for these negotiations, they only think there's about two weeks left. do or die, make or break, michael. >> make or break is right, thank

you so much, martha. george? >> thank you, michael. we get the latest on the covid vaccine for young kids. the fda is set to release data on pfizer's trials on children younger than 5 that could come as early as today and whit johnson has the details. good morning, whit. >> reporter: george, good morning. 18 million children in this country under age 5 are still not eligible for a vaccine. so many parents have been waiting for this information since vaccines started rolling out more than a year ago. that clinical trial data expected any day now on pfizer's vaccine for kids 6 months through 4 years old. it comes days before an fda advisory committee's public meeting next tuesday when they will review the data and vote on whether to recommend emergency use authorization. and results of the two-dose trials evaluated back in december, the efficacy for children between 6 months and 2 years old, these are the younger kids, was similar to that of teens and young adults. however, the immune response was lower in 2 to 4 years old. so pfizer is only submitting

data to the fda for two doses but says a third dose will likely be needed, george. >> we're seeing more states drop mask mandates. >> reporter: george, that's right. today delaware and rhode island, their indoor mask requirements will expire. nevada dropping masks indoors and in schools yesterday. at least ten states now are moving ahead of cdc recommendations which still recommend that most people should be wearing masks. george? >> whit johnson, thanks. michael? now to the super bowl security and concerns we could see demonstrations similar to the trucker protests in canada. will carr is in los angeles with the latest. good morning, will. >> reporter: and good morning, michael. in just two days all eyes will be on sofi stadium and with so many people flooding into southern california, authorities say they're on high alert and they're not taking any chances. while the teams gear up for super bowl lvi, authorities are executing their own game plans, ramping up security across the area, but on the heels of trucker protests in canada, the department of homeland security

is warning there could be similar protests around sofi stadium, but say those protests are largely aspirational. >> we don't want to speculate, but we have plans, and we're prepared to address it. >> reporter: it comes as they're sweeping southern california for threats using bomb-sniffing dogs on land, speedboats on water and numerous aircraft including this black hawk helicopter in the air. air and marine operations on high alert giving us a behind-the-scenes look at the concerns. >> one of the biggest safety concerns is just how close sofi stadium is to l.a.x. on a normal day you have planes flying all around the stadium. during the super bowl this will all be restricted airspace. >> reporter: no unauthorized aircraft including drones for a 30-mile radius around the stadium. >> our message for super bowl sunday is come out, enjoy the game, but leave your drone at home. >> reporter: if you get caught flying a drone, you could face a fine up to $30,000, and there are going to be strict protocols

inside the stadium as well. every fan will have to show proof of vaccination, and they're going to be required to wear a mask although, cecilia, but we've seen throughout the playoffs that can be difficult to evnforce. cecelia? >> it certainly can, will. okay, thank you so much. we turn to breaking news at the olympic games. the 15-year-old russian skater who had been favored to take home the gold will get an expedited hearing to determine whether she can compete in beijing. this, of course, after she tested positive for a banned substance. marcus moore is live in beijing with the latest. good morning, marcus. >> reporter: cecilia, good morning. as you know, women's figure skating is one of the most popular events at the winter games, and this morning it is in the midst of a growing firestorm. the results from the team figure skating event are in question and one star's chance to compete for gold is in jeopardy. this morning, skating phenom kamila valiyeva is facing possible suspension after officials confirmed the 15-year-old russian superstar tested positive for a banned substance. in a test taken christmas day, valiyeva tested positive for

trimetazidine, a heart medication that boosts blood flow and improves endurance, which could give athletes an unfair advantage. the results didn't come back until after valiyeva helped the russian olympic committee get gold in a team skating event monday night over team usa. the russian anti-doping agency handing her a provisional suspension because of that positive test. but she was seen back on the ice thursday after the same agency lifted the suspension clearing the way for her to compete in the women's figure skating competition where she is the favorite to win gold. >> if you let valiyeva compete in the women's competition where she's expected to win the gold medal, you are saying it's okay to cheat. but it is a terrible message, and it will taint these olympics forever. >> reporter: overnight olympic gold medalist nathan chen asked about the growing controversy. >> whatever ends up being the case will be the case. looking forward to hearing what comes out of this. >> reporter: olympics officials addressing the cloud now hanging

over the games. the ioc on behalf of the international testing authorities now asking to have valiyeva's suspension reinstated. when i asked what impact valiyeva's situation might have on the game, the ioc replied -- >> such cases are not helpful to the games. i think obviously it's difficult with this case ongoing. >> reporter: the russian olympic committee is vowing to fight the appeal saying that valiyeva passed a drug test both before and after that christmas day sample was taken, and they maintain that she should be able to stay in these games. in the meantime, the ioc is pushing to have a hearing to reinstate that suspension before february 15th. that's when valiyeva is set to compete in the women's skating competition, one she is expected to win. guys? >> clock is ticking there. marcus, thank you. at the games overnight shaun white did not win another medal in his final olympics, but he did bow out with lots of love

from his fellow competitors. and mikaela shiffrin is still searching for her first medal. maggie rulli is on the scene. good morning, maggie. >> reporter: hey, george, good morning. shaun white's final run will be one of the olympic moments out of these games and, like you said, even though he didn't make the podium, just watching that moment was watching history. overnight, the end of an era on the halfpipe. shaun white in what he says is his final olympic run. a strong start out of the gate hitting a massive 1440, his signature double mctwist 1260 and a daring frontside 1260. the five-time olympian leaving it all on the halfpipe. sitting in fourth place with one final run ahead of him, a last chance to pull off a killer run to get that coveted gold medal. the 35-year-old and oldest male halfpiper to ever compete in the olympics, crashing, missing out on making the podium, but finishing the run in style. sliding down the halfpipe with his helmet and fist in the air, surrounded by cheers. overcome with emotion, wiping away tears. the moment a bittersweet ending to a career decades in the making.

white grabbing his first of a record three olympic golds at his very first game in torino in 2006 when he was just 19. with long flowing locks known at the time by his nickname, the flying tomato. he's been inspiring generations of snowboarders to up their game ever since. [ cheers ] and on the ski slopes mikaela shiffrin back in action after not finishing her first two events coming in ninth place in the super g. while the two-time gold medalist didn't make it to the podium this time around, at the bottom of the slope, all smiles. mentally it appears she's back in the game. and, guys, it was just incredible. you could feel the impact that shaun white has had on the sport of snowboarding. when he was sliding down that halfpipe for the last time, every country, all of his competitors were cheering. by far the loudest cheers we have heard so far at these games. i mean, guys, look at this, team usa posting an emotional picture of shaun white hugging his competitors after his run with

world yesterday. i think it's a great trade for both teams. >> blockbuster. new details on the death of bob saget. the autopsy report says he died from head injuries likely suffered in an accidental fall. t.j. holmes has the details. good morning, t.j. >> good morning to you, george. the family wanted to be the first to let the public know this week that bob saget died of head trauma, but now we are seeing the full autopsy report and, look, some of these details are difficult to hear. bob saget hit his head so devastatingly that he actually fractured his skull in several places and this all happened while he was alone in his hotel room. new details in the death of comedian bob saget. the newly released autopsy report states saget died from an unwitnessed, accidental fall backwards, causing numerous skull fractures in his brain killing the 65-year-old actor. he was alone in his hotel room in orlando last month. that autopsy also revealing that at the time of his death, he

also had underlying heart disease. the star was also covid-19 positive, something his wife kelly and i spoke about when he sat down just a week after he died. >> he talked on stage about having covid in december. >> that was not anything serious. he was great. >> he seemed to be very healthy too. was there any health concern that you know of? >> all i'll point to is once again that last post of his where he just -- he felt like he was 26 again. >> reporter: a tox screen performed by the coroner found medication used for anxiety and seizures, also a sleep aid. the autopsy report doesn't suggest the medication or his heart disease contributed to his death, and no illicit drugs or alcohol were found. >> we're family, right? so we're going to help each other through this. >> reporter: actor, television host, and standup comedian saget shot the fame playing danny tanner for nine seasons on the sitcom "full house." his death came as he was

and head coach. >> it really felt like a funeral and i've never seen the kids cry so hard. it was just an awful situation. >> reporter: the fbi raiding harris' naperville home in 2020. according to a criminal complaint at the time he admitted to agents he solicited lewd images and sex from a boy on numerous occasions. harris' attorney telling abc news he wishes to take responsibility for his actions and publicly convey his remorse for the harm he has caused the victims in this case. and harris has been held without bond since his arrest. he now faces between 5 and 50 years behind bars. he is due to be sentenced on june 28th, michael. >> all right, erielle. thank you so much. now we turn to new research on osteoporosis. researchers are now saying having more body fat may increase your risk of osteoporosis, especially for men. our chief medical associate dr. jennifer ashton is here with

more including what could be a new way to prevent the disease. doc, tell us about this study and how is it different from the previous research they've done. >> first of all, the headline men and osteoporosis should right off the bat get your attention. in the past we have known that both men and women will deal with this disease as we age. we thought we knew that body fat was protective. this study challenges that so researchers at the university of chicago looked at national data. they looked at men and women with higher levels of body fat and more lean muscle mass and compared them for their risk of osteoporosis and what they found was surprising. it challenged what we thought we knew and found people with higher percentages of body fat actually had an increased risk of osteoporosis and shrink was found to be particularly apparent in men. so this is surprising. the theory there is something to do with inflammation and increased bone turnover that really you see with people who

have more body fat. very interesting. >> so what should we be on the lookout for? >> well, first of all, we have to remember this is a major threat to our health and our life so when you talk about the risks of osteoporosis, we have things like spinal compression fractures which cannot only be painful but dangerous. this can cause pain or decreased range of motion, a change in our posture and a loss of height. this can affect men and women as we age and can start as early as age 50. >> can you tell us ways we can fight it? >> so first make the diagnosis and we do that with an easy nonpainful test called a dexa bone density scan and you have to look at interventions here so first of august weight-bearing exercises, stresses like lifting weights, walking is good for our bones. calcium if you get it from food sources, really, really important. vitamin d3 you may need in supplement form and prescription medication, absolutely a mainstay if that diagnosis is made and then these, michael, prunes, latest study suggesting that eating five to ten prunes a

minutes maximum until they're golden brown and then -- >> a cheese sauce. >> this is where i was like, what are we doing here? >> cincinnati chili has a pile of this orange cheddar cheese sauce so i made a nacho kind of cheese to dip it in and taste it. that's your cincinnati style wing. >> while you taste we'll move over here and we're going with an l.a. korean style wing. >> yes, some of the best korean food in this country is in l.a. so i did a korean style food and that means we'll double fry the wings, double fried so you're not only frying once but twice. >> twice is nice. >> extra crispy and start with a great chili sauce, gochujang, very simple one is a chili paste you can find in almost any supermarket here or online. ketchup, brown sugar, sesame seed, vinegar in there and mix that all up until you get a nice sweet, delicious sauce for our wings. oh, here we go.

>> i got to show up and get some. >> this is so good. >> thank you for the assist. >> really nice wings and the secret to my wings is usually to get the air chilled wings. >> this is important. when you go to the store, george has like this very important information. air chilled. >> air chilled wings are the way to go. not the ones vacuum sealed because you will get a drier skin. i place them on a baking sheet a day or two before like today and place them in the fridge overnight and that's going to dry the skin super, super dry. >> super crispy over here. super crispy. so our sauce is simmering. >> all these spices, asian inspired with flour and also cornstarch which is very typical asian style. once you whisk it together and put your wings in there you'll go ahead and double fry it. fry it at a lower temperature to get a nice golden brown crispiness to it and then once it's golden brown and crispy, you'll bring up the temperature to about 400, 375.
