good morning america. ♪ it's saturday morning, this is "gma." good morning, america. welcome to our second hour. we're thrilled to have my man gio benitez back at the desk with us this weekend. you picked a good weekend to be here. >> we have that super food and i'm excited about that. >> we do, absolutely, of course, it is super bowl weekend pulling out the stops from the party food favorites gio was talking about to our "gma" kid correspondent aubrey, there she is right there, she is giving us a play-by-play of all the action from los angeles. >> she's been doing such a good job all week. really looking forward to seeing her. it is a busy saturday morning and we begin with the growing fears over a potential russian invasion of ukraine. more u.s. troops arriving in eastern europe overnight. this as the state department issues a strong warning. >> yeah, it's urging americans to leave ukraine immediately as president biden prepares for a call with vladimir putin scheduled to happen in just a matter of hours. the last time the two leaders spoke was back on december 30th.

so let's get right to abc's senior national correspondent terry moran, who is on the ground there in kyiv with the latest. terry, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, whit. as the possibility of war seems to increase by the day, governments across the world are following the u.s. lead and telling their citizens to get out now. ukrainians are not panicking. there is no sign of that but they are here in kyiv and across the country accelerating their preparations for war. this morning, ukraine is on a knife's edge as the u.s. is now preparing to evacuate nonessential staff from the american embassy here in kyiv. and as the white house is warning that russia is poised to invade this neighboring country in the next several days. president biden is expected to speak directly with vladimir putin today, an 11th hour effort to defuse the crisis and more countries are urging their citizens to leave ukraine from the uk to norway to the netherlands and beyond. now, russia too is pulling out some embassy staff warning of,

quote, possible provocations by ukraine or other countries. u.s. national security adviser jake sullivan sending an unmistakable message to the americans here, it's time to go now. >> we want to be crystal clear on this point. any american in ukraine should leave as soon as possible and in any event in the next 24 to 48 hours. >> reporter: some americans want to stay and support ukrainians in their strugge against russia. david plaster is a former army medic who has lived in ukraine for ten years, and he's already served on the front lines of the conflict. he is says ukraine is now his home. >> i'm not looking for a fight, but if a fight comes to me, comes to my home, i will defend those that i care about. there's nothing wrong with that. >> reporter: with more than 100,000 russian troops on ukraine's border and more than 30 warships in the black sea, all combat ready as they conduct massive live fire exercises in the field and on the waters, the u.s. is warning that the fight here would likely be swift and

horrific. if a russian attack on ukraine proceeds, it is likely to begin with aerial bombing and missile attack. >> reporter: and the mayor of ukraine, who is -- of kyiv, whose former heavy weight boxer, vitale clich cho has ordered an evacuation plan drawn up, generators and fuel supplies being stockpiled, and he has ordered territorial brigades to prepare for the defense of this city. guys. >> and now we all just wait and watch to see what happens, terry moran there for us. thank you. now to a breaking development in that massive trucker protest blocking a major border crossing between the u.s. and canada. for days now, police are moving in to remove protesters. abc's el win lopez is in detroit with the latest. good morning again. >> reporter: good morning. this morning police moving in to clear all demonstrators from this crucial bridge. the trucks are gone after days

of protest. police moving in to clear them out a short while ago, but dozens of protesters on foot remain at the bridge, surrounded by officers in riot gear. for days the blockade choking the flow of crucial auto parts, experts say automakers were losing millions by the minute. and it's not just them. auto workers are expected to lose up to $51 million this this alone. officials say noncompliant demonstrators could face up to a year in prison and a $100,000 fine. now, the u.s. department of homeland security is warning that protests like these could expand into parts of the united states and potentially disresup the big game, the super bowl in los angeles tomorrow. i spoke to a factory worker who tells me she's out of work. she doesn't know when she's going to get her next paycheck. she says she's scheduled for a shift on monday, but she doesn't know if that will even happen. so many impacted by all of this, whit. >> that standoff continues. thank you. coming up here, how the game wordle helped lead to the rescue

20-hour hostage situation. her rescue coming after her daughter says she did not post her wordle score. >> i wake up every day to her wordle score. >> reporter: but on sunday jennifer did not get that response. >> i was really bothered by it. >> reporter: her gut was right. after midnight on sunday, police say an intruder broke into her mom's home. see meanwhile while you ladies were worrying, denise, what was happening in your home? >> a few feet away from me i see a man coming into my bed -- near my bedroom. climbing in bed with me. >> reporter: the former middle school teacher knew she had to stay calm. >> i don't know why i decided to get calm, but i did. and he was saying i'm going to die. >> reporter: denise said the man threatened her with some kind of sharp object then forcing the grandmother to stand in the shower near him. >> i said to him, listen, you are the captain. i'm on your team. we will do whatever you say. >> reporter: she had no idea over a thousand miles away her

daughter suspected something was off calling police for a wellness check and a friend to go over who told them the shocking news. >> it's impossible to process that when someone is telling you your mother is in an ambulance and there are -- there's a s.w.a.t. team, and she was held hostage. >> reporter: the wordle superplayers are thinking nonstop of one five-letter word now. >> lucky is how i have described this whole experience. >> reporter: an experience with one very important takeaway. >> they wanted to get the message out that you should stay in touch with your family. >> reporter: the alleged intruder is facing home invasion and kidnapping charges. okay, so the day that this happened, the wordle word of the day was skill and these three ladies certainly had it. the skill to stay calm, the skill to know that something just was not right.

okay, so for those who still have no idea what on earth this game is, okay, so it is a game where you get six tries to guess a five-letter word. every day there is one new word. i know it sounds nerdy and boring but i can tell you from experience, it is highly addictive. a lot of people agree. "the new york times" just bought wordle for over a million dollars. i play every single day. i share my results with my friends. i can certainly tell you i will be keeping a very close eye now if one of them does not reply. >> part of that obsession, zohreen, thank you so much. we do appreciate it. gio, over to you. >> just an amazing story. thank you, whit. now to the latest on the pandemic. that major reversal, federal regulators delaying their review of the pfizer vaccine for kids under 5 to gather more data on a potential third dose. now, this pause comes just as some states lift mask mandates and while many are taking off those masks, others are doubling down wanting even more filtration. kn95s have been the most available high filtration masks

for sale but becky worley has a warning about a glut of fake ones on the market now. >> reporter: according to the cdc these critical pieces of protection may not be offering the filtration they promise. the agency site listing masks it says are not approved and might not offer adequate protection. kn95s are supposed to filter out 95% of very small particles but aaron collins says he's tested many supposed kn95's that only fil filter 30% of particles. >> so counterfeit respirators are a big issue. it's almost exclusively in the kn-95 space so seeing a lot of fakes in that space underperforming masks. >> reporter: add to that a 2020 report that stated 60% to 70% of kn95 masks did not meet u.s. regulatory standards. is and this has consumers asking, i think all these masks are legitimate, but how do i really know? >> there are a lot of things

people could look for in a counterfeit mask that are red flags. >> reporter: the starting point. >> you have to make sure the manufacturer is reputable. >> reporter: she says buy directly from their website. also look at the packaging for any misspellings or weird phrasing. experts say look for quality control issues. is the nose piece centered and sewn in properly. are the ear loops strongly affixed? which look pretty good on this one but self-described mask nerd aaron collins says it's tough. >> are you at 98% or 30%. this becomes a real problem because you don't know what the quality of the mask is and can't tell by looking at it. >> reporter: aaron says he prefers kf94s which he says are highly regulated by the korean government. many of which strangely come from beauty importers. like be healthy usa, also kollecte. he also says dn't buy from online super stores, instead order from sites like project n95 that he says verifies their

played by owen wilson. none is a spoiler and happens in the first few minutes of the film and there's a lot going on here but jennifer lopez has not lost any of that rom-com magic that we've come to know and love from her. for decades starting with "the wedding planner," i got a chance to see the film, and the soundtrack is incredible. it's a lot more pop than we're used to but really fun and had the songs stuck in my head for weeks. definitely something you can check out in theaters as well as at home streaming. it's a good time. just makes you smile. how could it not, j. lo in a rom-com. >> you know, that's a very important point, patrick, that you can watch in theaters or at home. it's a meta role saying anything is meta takes on a whole new meaning these days. so before mary j. blige takes the stage at the big game tomorrow night she's dropping new music. tell us about that. >> sure, well, if 2017's "strength of a woman" was her breakup album talking about the dissolution of her 15-year marriage, this new album titled "good morning gorgeous" is the

woman who came out on the other side and as she might say is looking for no more drama. the lead single you're hearing titled "amazing" produced by dj khaled. this big party jam but most of the rest of the album is a lot more introspective. it features duets with anderson .paak, neo, usher dealing with love and loss and moving on and what dating is like at 51 which is crazy to say that is what mary j. blige is going on her fourth decade in this industry and still impressing us and i'm sure that will be the case at the halftime show as well. >> i could not agree more. she's incredibly introspective. this is weird. i just realized i was wearing this dress when i presented on "gma" talking about the interview i did with her. we had a great conversation so i'm a huge fan of mary j. blige. patrick, if you can't get enough of the fabulous figure skating at the olympics and all the back story you've got serious throwbacks for us. >> yeah, for those of you that have figure skating fever and

just can't get enough we have two throwbacks that speak to two different generations. first 1992's "the cutting edge" with mora kelly who i loved on "the west wing." a disgraced figure skater who can't seem to find a partner to work with her and paired with a former olympic hockey player and if you haven't seen the film i think you can imagine that both some tension as well as maybe a little romance ensues. if you haven't seen it check that out. it's available on streaming. then the next one that i'll talk about is a 2005 film called "the ice princess" starring michelle trachtenberg, a bookworm who has a passion for figure skating and wants to pursue it and those around her don't think she should do it and stars hayden panettiere, joan cusack and for those missing samantha in the
