11:01 pm
abc 7 news reporter loose peña is part of our vaccine team and spoke to experts about what this means moving forward as many say we are getting closer to an endemic. roughly three months since boosters became available for california's 18 and older the cdc announced the protection from a third shot decreases after four months what the booster did is increases production of antibodies for a while ten weeks to four months. those antibodies are going to come down with time, but that doesn't mean you're immune response wayne. it just means one aspect of the immune response, dr. monica. gandhi ucsf's infectious disease. socialist highlighted that the first two doses of the vaccine continue to be highly effective against the virus those two doses primed the body to respond any time start t cells are b cells are still there. the b cells are the recipe book to make more antibodies. they can make antibodies

anytime. they see covid make take a couple days and t cells will help them make antibodies researchers also found the vaccines effectiveness against hospitalizations remained high at any eight percent four months after the third dose dr. maria raven chief of the emergency medicine department at ucsf has noticed a difference in patients people that are getting the booster seem to be getting less sick. they're not necessarily protected from getting infected, you know a hundred percent, but they are getting less sick as we're inching up to month four since many got boosted dr. raven has a new concern high risk people. booster immunity may be waning might be at higher risk of hospitalization now that we're coming to that three or four month mark, i would say the encouraging thing though. is that case rates overall are decreasing. now. the question is well, we need a force shot. i don't think as a general population we will but i think
11:03 pm
certain groups always will immunocompromised already approved for fourth boosters, dr. gandhi believes. we're about one month away from an endemic in california. meaning there will continue to be covid cases in our and what it will be easier to manage the virus we have the tools. bullet and keep our hospitalizations low those two tools are vaccination and therapeutics in san francisco loose pena abc 7 news. on the peninsula families received free covid tests and masks today at libraries across san mateo county libraries began giving away four antigen. at-home rapid tests and five masks per household. no appointments are necessary and everything is available on a first come first serve basis libraries are closed tomorrow, but if there are any supplies left, they'll be available monday until the kits are all given away. i think it's terrific. i would like to see it publicized a little more because you know, it's not something that i had heard about before i
