you are watching the news at 6:00. we begin with developing news on the tensions between russia and ukraine. the situation changing by the hour. we learned ukraine is now seeking talks with russia to discuss the military buildup. earlier today, the president spoke with the leader of ukraine. he promised to respond swiftly and decisively if russia takes further action against ukraine. >> a major military action could begin any day now. that includes this coming week before the end of the olympics. >> the talk comes a day after biden warned putin of swift and severe costs if ukraine is invaded. >> we are prepared with a package of economic consequences that would hit many of the oligarchs and make clear to russia there are real costs to

this. >> preparations are underway, including the u.s. providing ukraine with ammunition. some top lawmakers are hoping for a peaceful resolution. >> the best thing that could happen would be to pass the sanctions package that would destroy the russian economy. so putin could see it in writing. that might help him decide not to invade. >> some analysts say putin could punch himself if he goes ahead with military action. >> it might strengthen ties between ukraine and the european union and create a stronger sense of ukrainian national identity. it is hard for me to see how that helps putin or russia. >> ukrainian americans here in the bay area are making a request for prayers and a plea for diplomacy. we have thoughts on those who have family caught in the middle

of the crisis. >> ukrainians here in the bay area are beyond concerned about their family and friends back home. a russian invasion seemingly imminent. many are praying for peace. ♪ >> sunday prayers at this ukrainian orthodox church in san francisco for a homeland on the brink of possible invasion. >> everyone is scared. everyone is under the pressure. nobody knows what will happen. >> he has many family members living in ukraine. so do most of his parishioners. >> we are all afraid about our relatives. >> they just returned from ukraine. where the situation is growing tense. >> people are very sober about the fact that the war is possible. hopefully in the coming days the pressure from international politics will slow down any of

those tensions. >> we need to pray for a diplomatic resolution to this situation and hope that mr. putin can see, do not be foolish about a little bit of real estate. >> it is a feeling of uncertainty. >> he works with a bay area based nonprofit working to raise awareness about the ukrainian situation. this group is also mobilizing to provide humanitarian aid to the region. >> we partner with a lot of people who are very proactive. they will be a target. we need to support them. >> he hopes that diplomacy and divine intervention may help de-escalate military tensions. >> in this situation we need to combine prayer and political pressure. >> the corporation is planning a support rally calling on people

to stand with ukraine. it is scheduled for next sunday afternoon. >> a gathering i'm sure we will follow. house speaker nancy pelosi has a stark warning for putin. she said he has to know that war is not an answer. she hopes that diplomacy will stop an invasion from happening. >> we are not threatening the sanctions and the rest. it would guarantee that putin would invade. let's hope diplomacy works. this about diplomacy and deterrence. the president is very clear, there is a big price for russia to pay if they go there. if they do not invade, it is not that he never intended to. >> this is a complicated issue. here's a look at some of the events leading to the tensions. in march of 2014, russia annexed crimea, and out thomas peninsula in ukraine with strong russian loyalties. this was on the pretext that it was defending russian interests.

moscow sees this growing support from nato in terms of weaponry, training, and personnel, as a threat to its own security. it has claimed that ukraine has boosted its own troop numbers. in preparation for an attempt to take the region, a claim that ukraine has denied. in the south bay, a woman faces charges in a crash that killed a passenger in her car. she was driving yesterday before midnight when her car left the road and hit a tree. the man inside the car did not survive. she was taken to the hospital. police say she will face vehicular manslaughter and dui charges. this is the 13th fatal traffic collision in san jose this year alone. cyclists came together in the south bay to remember one of their own. she died in a collision last sunday.

she was taking part in a ride with a touring club from san jose. several riders joined the memorial ride. they set out in san jose this morning. the fatal collision remains under investigation. family and friends held a community vigil in san bruno today. he was killed by san mateo deputies in october of 2018. he is shown here when a pedestrian traffic violation took a violent turn. >> we are here to support the family and tried to shine a light on this terrible tragedy. >> his family has long disputed the claims by the sheriff's office that deputies tried to defuse the situation. video shows officers telling the man to get on his stomach.

the district attorney's office decided not to file criminal charges, sing the officers acted in a lawful manner. for the second time in two years, the 49ers have been hit by hackers. this time it was the teams corporate i.t. network. a ransomware group posted what appeared to be team financial documents on the dark web. so far there is not any information on ransom or demands or what information was stolen. the fbi is aware of the incident and the 49ers said it has no indication that the incident involves systems outside the corporate network. such as those connected to levi's stadium or ticketholders. just ahead, drug cartel battles in mexico are impacting avocado imports to the u.s. exactly what happened in federal officials giving a suspension on mexican avocados. it was a site today in san

>> look at that. a hit-and-run driver slammed into this fire hydrant today in san francisco. you can see it gushed water into the air more than three stories high. fire crews shut off the water and they say the hydrant will be replaced. an officer shared this video with us. avocado exports are the latest victim of the drug cartel turf battles and extortion of avocado growers in mexico. the u.s. government has suspended all imports of mexican avocados after a safety inspector received a threat. the suspension is until further notice. mexico is the largest avocado producer in the world. it accounts for 30% of global production. in the last six weeks, avocado producers exported thousands of tons of avocado to the u.s.

today's the last day of business for the only full-service grocery store in west oakland. community foods market opened in 2019. it had high hopes of serving the underserved neighborhood. even so, with the pandemic, just eight months later store owners were not able to overcome labor shortages, inflation, and supply chain issues. everything in the store is being sold at half off today. some of the state's key reservoirs are starting to see the impact of little rainfall. california's largest reservoir, shasta lake, is only at 45% of its average rated that is compared to 72% at this time last year. last month was the driest january in california history. the snowpack, which is a key source of water supply, is also quickly shrinking. a valentine's day gift giving tradition has changed a little bit this year. flowers are still a favorite,
