7:42 am
now with our drone i want to you take a look at this course in its totality. look what i'm passing by right now. those fencing, those orange fences are going to symbolize the moment where i register in my brain that there is an obstacle in the path and i have to do something to get out of the way. that's where i'm going to slam on the brakes and do everything wrong. we're going to be doing this twice. the first time we'll do everything wrong. i'm going to panic, i'm going to slam on the brakes and more likely than not i'm going to hit that barrier. largely because i'm going too fast for the conditions on this roadway. now i'm getting into the lane and i'm going to hit about 40 miles an hour. here we go. now i'm driving at 40 miles an hour, there i register that there is a problem, oh, my god, i'm going to slam into -- ooh. >> ooh. >> and slam into the snowbank behind me, you guys. i am okay. i braked as hard as i could. everything is fine here.

7:44 am
even in above freezing temperatures as high as 45 degrees since pavement can be cooler than the air. experts say to safely get through it, take your foot off the gas and keep the wheels steady. if you need to brake, do it gently riding it out until you regain traction. so i want you to think about three factors when you are driving in snowy and icy conditions. the first is speed. shaving off just a couple of miles an hour makes a massive difference. the other thing is you don't want to put too many inputs into the car at once. you don't want to brake and turn. the car is not going to be able to handle it. think about doing one of those things at a time. brake, then turn. and there is a fantastic hack that they taught us here at the team o'neil rally school which is don't fixate on that thing that you're crashing into which is what i was doing down there like i slammed on the brakes, i panicked, i only thought about that thing i'm crashing into. look where you want to go, that

thing that is going to get you out of trouble, the spot away from trouble, that is going to keep you safe. just five-mile difference but it will make a significant difference. here i am at 30 miles an hour. i see this. i'm braking, now i'm looking where i want to go and able to swerve out of the way. again, the idea here is not necessarily to stop dead short before that obstacle that's in your roadway. it's to make sure that you can get out of that situation safely and gain control of the car. that's what slowing down does, hopping out of the car. so that's a much better result than obviously the first one which was a little scary, guys. >> so first of all, you are okay. you're fine, okay, matt, right? >> yeah, i'm totally fine. i'm totally fine, absolutely, robin. >> you're telling us the difference in speed was just
7:46 am
five miles per hour and it made that difference? >> yeah, and we set up the cones in exactly the same -- all the difference in the world. you can gain control of the car. that's why they say in wet or snow, go slow. robin. >> so what else can you tell us to keep drivers safe, matt? >> reporter: i think the most important thing, look where you want to go, don't fixate on that thing that you're crashing into. it's like riding a bike. your body will take the car where it needs to go, so go slow and look at the way out, robin. >> easier said than done as we all have probably experienced. matt, glad you're okay. thank the team out there for us. >> great demo. very helpful. >> thanks, robin. coming up next, our "play of the day" on -- >> hump day! >> oh, she did it. a new study from the cdc finds getting vaccinated while pregnant may help protect babies under 6 months from covid hospitalizations. here with more is our chief medical correspondent dr. jennifer ashton. you know people want to know about this study. >> yeah, robin, and this is important. remember, we're talking about newborns under 6 months of age who will not be eligible if or when a vaccine for young children is authorized. this is the first time we have data that suggests real important outcomes in babies born to moms who have been vaccinated so let's take a look at what the cdc found. they looked -- this is for people getting vaccinated with mrna vaccines during the delta surge -- they found that babies born to moms who had been vaccinated were 61% less likely to be hospitalized with covid. if they were hospitalized with covid, 84% of those babies were to moms who had not been vaccinated, again showing that higher risk in terms of outcome and if those babies wound up in an intensive care unit setting, 88% of those babies were born to

8:31 am
kremlin spokesman this morning saying that there still is a possibility that diplomacy can work, but that russia is getting pretty tired of these threats and warnings from the president. >> well, the threats are coming in the other direction. they're coming from russia unprovoked massing forces on ukraine's borders, but there always has to be an opening for diplomacy. in fact, that's my job so we'll pursue that as the president said yesterday, we're prepared either way. we're prepared if russia is going to engage in meaningful diplomacy and we're also prepared if they choose to renew aggression against ukraine. the choice is really president putin's. >> your intelligence has suggested that the invasion could come today. does that still feel possible? >> we said that we were in a window of time in which the invasion could come at any time. president putin's put in place the capacity to act on very short notice. he can pull the trigger today, tomorrow or next week. the forces are there if he wants to renew aggression against ukraine. >> what's the basis for a diplomatic solution right now?
8:32 am
>> look, george, we shared ideas with russia several weeks ago about ways on a reciprocal basis with each side taking steps and we could actually improve security throughout europe. we did that with our european partners, allies and we're waiting for a response from russia. i spoke with foreign minister lavrov. he said a response is forthcoming. we'll take a look at it and see where we go from there and remain committed to finding a diplomatic solution. it's the right thing to did. it's the responsible thing to do. it would avert a war. but, again, it really is president putin's choice to make, and what we're seeing on the border remains deeply, deeply concerning. >> it appears from some of the comments from american officials over the last several days that you're concerned that president zelensky of the ukraine is not taking this threat seriously enough. is that true? >> i think president zelensky is taking it very seriously. he is trying to maintain calm. he doesn't want his people to panic. that's the right thing to do,
8:33 am
but i think the ukrainians are taking it very seriously. of course, if there is renewed aggression by russia, the consequences would be terrible and first and foremost, terrible for the ukrainian people so he recognizes that. we have been supporting ukraine and we provided more defensive assistance to ukraine last year than any previous year. just the other day we put out a $1 billion loan guarantee to help bolster their economy. other countries are doing the same. we're there to support ukraine. we're there to help it defend itself if there is russian aggression. >> but the president ruled out american troops. can ukrainians handle the russians on their own? >> the ukrainians have real capacity. aided by many countries including the united states, i think they'd make life very difficult for the russians if they went in but, again, by far the more responsible course is to avoid conflict in the first place which is why we're continuing to do everything we can to see if there's a diplomatic resolution. at the same time making it very clear to russia that it will face massive consequences for renewed aggression not only in terms of continued support for ukraine's defense or bolstering
8:34 am
nato itself which is exactly what president putin says he wants to prevent but also in terms of serious economic and financial sanctions. >> but the president of ukraine also said that perhaps this idea of joining nato is something he called it a dream, i think, was the word that he used. maybe that's the likely outcome of this, that it's something for the far, far, far distant future. is that accurate? >> well, the main point is that that should be up to the people of ukraine and its elected government. if they want to seek to join nato, again, nato has an open door policy. that is sacrosanct so it is up to them and the alliance itself in terms of admitting new members if they meet the requirements. i think president biden and others have said that's not happening tomorrow but the principle if ukraine seeks admission to nato needs to be considered and the alliance will make that decision, that remains front and center and it's not a principle we're going back on.
8:35 am
>> final quick question, is the threat today greater than it was yesterday? >> you know, from day to day, george, you can't say it's higher or lower. it's there. it's there. it's real. we haven't seen a pullback. we'd like to see one. if we see one we'd welcome it. we're prepared for diplomacy or aggression, we're prepared
