>> ike is here with the very latest. good morning. >> good morning, mona. there are growing fears that violence in eastern ukraine could provide the spike for a new war in europe. with world leaders warning that russia is now on the brink of an all-out conflict in ukraine, president biden today will host a closed door meeting with u.s. allies, including leaders of the uk, france, germany, italy, poland, and romania. also this morning, russia's foreign minister has agreed to meet with u.s. secretary of state antony blinken next week, but the state department says the meeting will only take place provided there is no further russian invasion of ukraine. on thursday, blinken described to the u.n. how the conflict could unfold. >> russia missiles and bombs will drop across ukraine. communications will be jammed. cyber attacks will shut down key ukrainian institutions. after that, russian tanks and soldiers will advance on key targets that have already been identified and mapped out in detailed plans.

>> russia claims it has no plans to invade ukraine and claims to be withdrawing troops. but president biden says moscow is actually moving more troops to the border. >> my sense is it will happen in the next several days. >> reporter: now ukraine is accusing separatists of control in the ukraine, an area where a long simmering conflict could be voided to russia by long simmering invasion. there are reports of teachers getting hurt in the shelling. the pace of civil defense preparations here has really intensified, not just inspecting and preparing bomb shelters, but children across ukraine are now drilling in schools, readying themselves for a potential russian bombardment. >> reporter: meanwhile, the growing conflict could take a major toll on the u.s. economy. wall street thursday suffered its worst day of the year. the dow plunging more than 620 points. ad the white house warns because of russia's vast energy

supplies, gas prices here at home could soar even higher. onoi e eve claims a sse scenio ga. and you might get $6.50 or $7. >> reporter: the state department says russia has expelled a u.s. diplomat, calling the move unprovoked. >> ike, thank you. a winter storm already bringing dangerous conditions to millions of americans is now unleashing tornadoes in the south. damage is reported across alabama. at least two possible tornadoes touched down near tuscaloosa. another reported twister damaged homes near birmingham and overturned tractor-trailers on interstate 22. farther north, police had to shut done a 30-mile stretch of highway outside chicago thursday after this 100-vehicle pileup in the snow. severe weather is now moving into the northeast. heavy winds could cause power outages in parts of new england. we'll take a closer look at your

forecast in about five minutes. breaking overnight, police have moved in, arresting the organizers of that trucker protest in ottawa, canada. truckers protesting covid restrictions have paralyzed the canadian capital for weeks. police have also sealed off the city's downtown to stop outsiders from joining the protest. california has become the first state in the country to unveil a plan to treat covid as an endemic. the governor says his policy envisions more normal life with clear dreg directions to deal with future outbreaks. it comes with growing pressure to lift school mask mandates. some teachers say edging towards normalcy is okay, but masks need to stay on in schools for now. >> it is risky. you may get away with it very well. it's possible you're going to get away with it. but you do have a risk when you pull back if you have a certain dynamic of infection that you'll have a rebound. we've been to this show before where things came down, you pull back a little and it bounces back. >> meanwhile, every state except

hawaii has announced plans to drop indoor mask mandates for businesses. today is sentencing day for the former minnesota police officer seen on video using her gun instead of her taser, killing daunte wright. the case a flash point in the debate over police training and accountability. >> taser, taser, taser! >> reporter: this morning, kim potter, the former police officer who shot daunte wright during this traffic stop last april saying she mistook her gun for her taser will learn her fate. >> we the jury on the charge of manslaughter in the first degree find the defendant guilty. >> reporter: a jury in december found potter guilty of first and second-degree manslaughter in the 20-year-old's death. >> i'm sorry it happened. i didn't want to hurt anybody. >> reporter: her emotion, seen on this body camera video moments after the shooting. >> i'm going to go to prison. >> reporter: today the minnesota

attorney general's office is seeking a seven-year prison sentence, less than half the 15-year maximum in the state for first degree manslaughter, writing, quote, daunte wright and his life must be held in the highest regard. the presumptive sentence reflects the culpability of the defendant's recklessness in causing daunte's death. but potter's attorneys want a reduced sentence or probation, citing her track record on the force, lack of criminal record and remorse. the prosecution writing if the judge is inclined to give a reduced sentence, potter should spend a minimum of one year behind bars followed by ten years of probation. in court today, potter is expected to reiterate how sorry she is and again apologize to wright's family, members of whom are expected to give impact statements before the sentencing. the wright family has also scheduled a news conference for later today. minnesota is making a move toward restricting the use of so-called no-knock warrants after a black man was killed by police. a committee of house lawmakers has passed a bill that would limit the use of those warrants

to cases when someone is being held against their will. the vote came on the same day as amir locke's funeral. he was shot by police executing a no-knock warrant. he was not a suspect. but police and lawmakers thursday debated whether restricting those warrants is a good thing. >> we have the opportunity to communicate to our cops on the street that their leadership will not put them in a position where their safety is compromised. we have the opportunity the take this bull further and fully ban the use of no-knock warrants. >> there are perhaps members or supporters of this bill who have no idea what it is we're dealing with on the streets. we are not dealing with people who simply come to the door and answer it because we knock and ask them politely. >> the aclu is calling for the officer who killed locke to be fired. days after a former navy engineer from maryland pleaded guilty in a major spy case, his wife appears ready to do the same. diana toebbe is accused of serving as a lookout while her husband dropped off nuclear

passengers on this ferry were thrown to the floor as a monster wave slammed onto the boat off the coast of germany. the water smashing the vessel's front window. at least one person was injured. that storm packed 100-mile-per-hour winds. five u.s. navy sailors have been charged for leaking video of a fighter jet crashing into the south china sea. the f-35 slammed into the deck of the "uss carl vinson" before dropping into the water injuring seven sailors. the military is trying to recover that jet. the danger of social media is at the center of a story in florida. a man accused of stalking a teenager he met on tiktok was shot and killed after showing up at the girl's home. now her parents are speaking out. this morning, a teen who exploded in popularity on social media and her parents are opening up about the teen's alleged stalker who was shot and killed at their home by her father. ava majury's parents say they allowed her to begin using social media in 2020 when she was 13.

♪ when you're on your way ♪ >> reporter: she soon gained 1 million followers on tiktok alone. but now ava's mom and dad are warning other parents about the consequences of internet stardom. they tell abc news an 18-year-old identified by "the new york times" as eric rohan justin of maryland became obsessed with ava eventually showing up to their home in naples, florida, in july 2020. they say justin blew open the front door with a shotgun before ava's dad, a former police lieutenant, shot and killed justin. ava's father has not been charged. the sheriff's office saying the investigation is still active. at the time of the shooting, the case was determined to be attempted home invasion. ♪ you act so different around me ♪ >> reporter: ava said her posts never included provocative pictures. most of them showed her singing or pulling pranks, but her parents acknowledge they did allow ava to previously sell

back now with cars burning at sea. a cargo ship that holds thousands of vehicles including porsches and bentleys caught fire in the atlantic ocean wednesday. the crew members were rescued and the ship was left adrift at sea. it was due to arrive in the u.s. next week. los angeles rams quarterback matthew stafford is doing damage control. he was criticized for turning away after seeing a woman fall off a stage fracturing her spine at the rams super bowl rally. stafford and the rams now say they will pay her medical bills. we turn to the overdose death of a major league baseball pitcher. a jury has convicted a team employee of supplying the drugs that killed tyler skaggs, but abc's derricke dennis reports it isn't over yet. >> reporter: this morning a verdict in the trial that centered on the overdose death of major league pitcher tyler skaggs. the 27-year-old angels star died in a texas hotel just before a game in 2019. >> please join the texas rangers, the los angeles angels

and all of major league baseball as we observe a moment of silence. >> reporter: a jury now convicting former angels team publicist eric kay of supplying skaggs with the drugs which according to toxicology results included a mixture of ethanol, fentanyl and oxycodone. >> we're obviously disappointed in the verdict. >> reporter: kay's attorney saying there are no winners here. >> this is a tragedy all the way around, you know, eric kay is ready to do a minimum 20 years in the federal penitentiary and it goes up from there, and tyler skaggs is gone. >> reporter: during the trial five other angels players testified they received oxycodone from kay and that he was the only source of the pills. according to espn, kay allegedly told investigators he provided oxycodone to skaggs and abused it with him and that other team officials knew about it. >> it is a grueling, difficult grind through a season, and that

is why over the years we have heard stories of athletes taking painkillers and taking drugs and just trying to get through the season. >> reporter: in response to thursday's verdict, the skaggs family attorney saying, we have no doubt that the angels knew what eric kay was doing and the team is morally and legally responsible for his conduct. in the upcoming civil cases we are looking forward to holding the team accountable. the angels saying, the team is saddened by the heartache surrounding this case saying the testimony from the players was incredibly difficult for our organization to hear and a reminder that too often drug use and addiction are hidden away. kay will be sentenced in june. he faces 20 years to life in prison. mona, andrea. >> derek, thank you. >> brad pitt is suing angelina jolie accusing his ex-wife of secretly selling her interest in their french winery to a russian oligarch. they bought the property for $28 million, but they allegedly agreed not to sell it without the other's consent. coming up, a new flavor of coke that is out of this world.
