>> good to be here and a busy morning. we begin with the latest on the showdown with russia over ukraine. our terry moran is there for us in the region this morning and we will break down what the economic impact could be here at home as fears of an invasion grow. >> very real fears this morning president biden telling me he believes vladimir putin will invade and that this will come within the next several days. the president now set to meet with world leaders by phone this afternoon. secretary of state antony blinken and vice president kamala harris are in germany this morning for high-level diplomatic talks with america's closest allies. let's go right to our senior white house correspondent mary bruce with the very latest. good morning, mary. >> reporter: good morning, cecilia. well, this administration is now engaged in a last-minute diplomatic scramble as it seems russia is looking to create an excuse to attack. now, biden says there is still room for diplomacy here, but he is also warning that the risk that putin actually goes through with this and invades is very high. this morning, top u.s. officials holding urgent meetings with key allies in europe as russia appears even closer to invading ukraine. secretary of state blinken

delaying his trip to deliver a last-minute address to the united nations. >> i am here today not to start a war, but to prevent one. >> reporter: america's top diplomat peeling back the curtain on u.s. intelligence accusing russia of planning a full-scale invasion. >> it's unfolding right now, today, as russia takes steps down the path to war and reissued the threat of military action. >> reporter: u.s. officials are expecting a worst case scenario bracing for vladimir putin's version of shock and awe. russian troops going into ukraine from at least three sides. missiles spewing across the sky, special forces attacking the capital city of kyiv armed with a list of military and government officials to target. >> my sense it will happen within the next several days. >> reporter: president biden saying russia is increasing its troops along the border, not backing away as the kremlin claims and that they are looking to create an excuse to go in. the u.s. warning that russia could stage a fake terrorist

bombing or even a real chemical attack against civilians to justify an invasion. now, russia says they have no intention of invading, but it also seems clear they are not interested in compromise or de-escalation. in a letter to the u.s., they have restated their hard-line demands including that ukraine never be allowed to join nato. now, secretary blinken is set to meet next week with his russian counterpart, but the russians have made clear if their demands are not met, they say they will be forced to take unspecified, quote, military technical measures. cecilia? >> every hour in this diplomatic crisis matters right now, mary. let's turn to terry moran there in ukraine. terry, you are seeing a real shift in how folks on the ground are preparing for what could come. >> reporter: we are, cecilia. civil defense preparations are really accelerating and the u.s. government expects concern about how ready they were, but from kids learning first aid and bomb shelters being prepared, to the

government putting out maps of where those bomb shelters are, you do see a seriousness of purpose, and they need it this morning. russia keeping up the pressure, heavy shelling along the front line of that long simmering conflict in eastern ukraine between russian-armed separatists and the ukrainian government. today there was more shelling in months, we are told. no report of injuries or deaths at this time, but it is clearly an escalation and that worries the u.s. government because one of the things they are concerned about is that what looks to be now a deliberate escalation in that conflict could be used as a justification for vladimir putin to attack. meanwhile, putin himself is meeting with the leader of belarus today. those two are concluding their massive joint exercises just north of the border here. all this, of course, has ukrainians on edge. polls showing that ukrainians now are really beginning to take seriously the conflict, although there's a lot of people who perhaps still out of wishful thinking that this is russia

just trying to intimidate them. tomorrow putin with oversee the test of ballistic missiles in russia tomorrow. another show of might and defiance. michael? >> has ukraine on edge and everyone around the world as well. terry, thank you so much for that. the crisis also rattling investors as wall street took a beating yesterday. a russian invasion would have a serious economic impact, not just in europe but here in the u.s. our economic correspondent deidre bolton has more for us this morning. good morning, deidre. >> reporter: good morning, michael. many say that traders are either guided by greed or fear. these past 24 hours have been all about fear. the dow dropped more than 600 points yesterday. the average american 401(k) retirement saver lost about $2,500 yesterday alone. so if there is an incursion, the first place americans are likely to feel the pinch, at the pump. gas buddy saying we could see it move higher by $5 to $10 per barrel. that would translate to between

5 and 10 cents more per gallon and keep in mind gas prices, michael, they are already about 40% higher right now than they were this time last year. >> definitely feel the pinch at the pump. deirdre, higher oil and gas prices could make overall inflation worse. >> reporter: it certainly could, and as we already know, we feel it every day. americans are paying more for transportation, for food, for rent, all of those prices risk going higher. michael? >> deidre bolton, thank you so much. whit? michael, turning now to that major storm on the move as we head into the holiday weekend slamming the midwest with heavy snow and ice overnight and tornadoes in the south. now at least 24 states are on alert for dangerous weather. ginger is tracking it all for us. ginger, good morning. >> reporter: whit, good morning to you. we just got blasted with this squall line that brought 66-mile-per-hour wind gusts to newark all the way down the shore up to 70 miles per hour. 56 in philadelphia. gusty with that line but it's the same cold front and storm

that blasted everybody from colorado to alabama. this morning, a highway in illinois is still shut down after a major winter storm raked the midwest and south. up to a foot of snow plus wind-driven whiteouts leaving more than 100 vehicles in a monster pileup near el paso, illinois. the line of wrecks seeming endless on interstate 39. i-55 closed for a time too after a separate 100-vehicle pileup with crashes and spinouts. semis trapped in the snow in missouri. kansas city getting more than seven inches. on the southern side a line of severe storms stacked with violent winds, four reported tornadoes whipping through alabama. winds gusting up to 60 miles per hour taking down a giant tree putting it into a home in birmingham. elsewhere in jefferson county, the winds crumpling the top of this gas station and tipping several tractor trailers. in indiana, floodgates at the oakdale river had to be released. nearly 200 homes in carroll

county told to evacuate. water from the river engulfing nearby streets. >> oh, my gosh. >> reporter: the dramatic freeze thaw of spring making ice jams in new york. in buffalo ice on this creek crashing into the bridge. i'm out here boldly with my coat open and will not be by tomorrow and sunday. look at what the front does to the temperatures. it'll take a huge tumble. we've already got all those alerts by the way in parts of the northern plains for new blizzard warnings but watch as temperatures like 70 in washington, d.c., records from philadelphia to boston just yesterday will feel like 14 in philadelphia by sunday morning. 11 in new york city. so prepare yourself, cecilia. >> can't put those coats away just yet. ginger, thanks. we turn to the latest on the fraud investigation into the trump business empire. a judge ruling that the former president and two of his children must testify in a case brought by new york's attorney general. our chief washington correspondent jonathan karl has more. jon, they have to sit down but they may not have to say very much here. >> reporter: that's for sure,

cecilia. this is another major legal setback for donald trump. the judge ordered trump and his two oldest children, that's ivanka and don jr., to testify under oath within 21 days into the new york state investigation into the family's business practices. this is one of two investigations into whether or not the trumps illegally manipulated the value of their assets to either get more favorable loans or to avoid paying taxes. the trumps will appeal this decision, but as you point out, even if they testify, they may not say much. the judge revealed that eric trump testified in this case some two years ago. he took the fifth 500 times, repeatedly refusing to answer questions by invoking his right against self-incrimination. and, cecilia, this time the trumps may have even more of a reason to invoke the fifth. this comes just after their

longtime accountants, mazars usa, dropped the trump organization as a client saying that the -- the financial statements they had filed over the past ten years with information from the trump organization can no longer be considered reliable. so if they do come around to testifying, i imagine we'll see more fifth amendment pleading. >> i think you're probably right there, jon. thanks so much. michael? now to a major step toward a new phase of covid. california becoming the first state to reveal its plans for living with the virus. matt gutman has the very latest. >> reporter: this morning, california becoming the first state to officially declare an end to two years of mandates with a road map focused on living with the virus rather than trying to stamp it out. >> what we're announcing here today is about turning a page, moving from this crisis mentality, moving away from a reactive mindset and crisis mindset to living with this virus. >> reporter: that includes a focus on reinstituting mask mandates during future surges,

regional testing of wastewater and improving access to covid treatments. as of this morning, every state except for hawaii and puerto rico has announced plans to lift universal indoor mask requirements. >> hallelujah. i am very tired of this on again, off again with masks. >> reporter: new mexico becoming the latest to ditch face coverings, effective immediately. washington state lifting its mask mandate next month after nearly two years. >> our goal is to knock down the rates of this infection by taking smart, common sense measures that we know that works. >> reporter: as omicron recedes one model commissioned by the associated press now suggesting as many as 73% of americans have some degree of immunity to the variant. but health experts warn immunity levels can vary and it's still unclear how much protection unvaccinated americans in particular have against reinfection. >> we still have to be incredibly cautious because we don't know what it means for immunity and new variants to pop

up. >> reporter: the world health organization says it's now monitoring three new subvariants of omicron, including what's known as b.a.2, which could be even more transmissible than the original omicron. right now it's estimated to comprise about 4% of the total cases in the u.s. that as the cdc prepares to update its guidance on masks as early as next week. whit? >> something to watch for in the week ahead. matt, thank you. we move to the very latest on the vaccine mandate protests north of our border. protesters were arrested by otawa police overnight and our kenneth moton is there for us in ottawa with more on the so-called freedom convoy. kenneth, good morning. >> reporter: whit, good morning. a few big rigs left but downtown of canada's capital city is essentially locked down to traffic right now. very large police presence on parliament hill. leaders just announced the closing of parliament to clear

out the remaining demonstrators. overnight ottawa police moved in on this so-called freedom convoy and started to arrest protesters including two of the organizers. for three weeks protesters clogged the streets demanding an end to canada's covid-19 restrictions. prime minister justin trudeau invoking the emergency's act to clear them out. ottawa police say they are working to end this unlawful demonstration peacefully but tey do say if these protesters do not leave, that they do have plans. michael? >> all right, thank you so much for that, kenneth. now we're going to turn to the olympics and the ioc president finally speaking out overnight about the doping scandal casting the doubt or shadow over these games even though russia's 15-year-old figure skating star failed to medal. maggie rulli is in beijing with the latest. good morning, maggie. >> reporter: hey, michael, good morning. this is the first time we heard from the head of the ioc since the scandal broke. he says what he saw out there on the ice was disturbing.

there's no mistaking it. this was a different kamila valiyeva on the ice. after being allowed to compete in the women's finals despite testing positive for an illegal performance-enhancing substance, the 15-year-old plagued by a series of uncharacteristic falls. at the end of her skate, valiyeva left the ice in tears, met by harsh words from her coaches. overnight for the first time ioc president thomas bach weighing in condemning any possible role that valiyeva's team may have played in her positive test. >> my experience over years having had to listen to many lies and to many explanations of doping cases, and they're realizing that doping very rarely happens alone by the athletes. >> reporter: bach calling the treatment of valiyeva by her own country, chilling. >> i was very, very disturbed. when i afterwards saw how she was received by her closest

>> reporter: good morning. it is quite a story. for this family it was a terrifying and dramatic ordeal they say showed the dangers lurking in the shadows of the bright lights of internet fame. she's a 15-year-old social media sensation. ava majury amassing a loyal following on tiktok. ♪ but now the majury family opening up about the danger that came with their daughter's online fame after ava's father shot and killed the man they say showed up to their front door with a gun last july. >> someone came to kill me. i was in fear and i had to do what i had to do to protect my family and i made sure of it. >> reporter: ava says what started as a pandemic hobby when she was just 13 years old turned into a lucrative business. her tiktok account garnering 1.2 million followers. >> this is such a dream for multiple kids, everyone in our generation now wants clout or numbers behind their name and we realize that we're given the

opportunity to do it freely without having to post provocative stuff. >> reporter: but ava says in early 2020 she noticed one follower trying to get her attention commenting on her tiktok videos and reaching out to her through other social media apps asking for photos, even paying kids she shout was friends for information about her. was there a point where you started selling pictures of yourself to him? >> after talking to both my parents, i thought it would be mutual if i got in contact with him directly and i said, hey, like please stop going through my friends and please stop contacting people for information about me. like just come straight to me and you can purchase it off of me. >> reporter: she says his requests escalated and became inappropriate so she blocked him on all of her accounts and that's when her father rob said he intervened. >> contacted him directly when ava received a message, told him she's a minor. he needs to stop pursuing

anything and that, you know, he should not contact her anymore at which point it seemed that he was very apologetic and i guess, you know, trying to be pleasing at that point. never knowing that he had this diabolical plan to show up. >> reporter: eventually the family says the stalker sending messages, threatening to hurt ava to her classmate. her dad himself a retired police lieutenant now warning other families to take this kind of contact seriously. >> i negated it and said, oh, the person that we suspect is the author of any of these blurbs lives in maryland, young, probably doesn't have a means to act on it. >> reporter: around 4:30 in the morning on july 10th he stalker showed up to their house with a shotgun blowing open their front door. >> when that sound went off we

knew what it was when we heard that loud boom. i actually thought my daughter was dead and he was just standing there looking at us for a few minutes like almost like he thought maybe for a second i was my daughter in the doorway. >> reporter: rob majury grabbed his own gun and shot the intruder. according to the police report the shooter was found unresponsive wearing a vest containing multiple shotgun shells. police telling abc news the investigation is ongoing. majury says authorities have told him that he's protected by florida's stand your ground law and he's not been charged with any crime. >> there was no second-guessing. there was no time to rethink my actions. i reacted. and i reacted -- >> perfectly. >> as best i could under the duress and extreme conditions i was put under. >> reporter: since the shooting ava is now homeschooled and still remains on social media, a decision her parents support. >> she worked really hard at getting the crowd that she has. as bad as this situation is with tiktok it's actually a really great forum. it was a very positive healthy environment for her to be in

especially after what we just went through. >> and i asked ava why she wants to stay on social media despite everything that's happened. she said she loves the space, what she can do there and hopes to fund her college education with it. she doesn't want to let one bad person take away something she loves, cecilia. >> we are so glad ava and her family are okay. thank you, janai. we turn to the latest chapter in the divorce drama between brad pitt and angelina jolie. he is now suing her over a deal to sell her stake in their french winery. lama hasan has more on this story. good morning, lama. >> reporter: good morning to you, cecilia. brad pitt going head-to-head with angelina jolie in what could turn out to be another courtroom showdown for the former couple, tis time he accuses her of secretly selling her share in their french winery to a russian oligarch. >> the figures didn't add up. >> big deal? >> wine? >> reporter: this morning the

fight making its way to court, brad pitt suing his ex-wife angelina jolie accusing her of unlawfully selling her share of that estate and winery located in the south of france. in court documents obtained by abc news pitt alleging the star consummated the purported sale without pitt's knowledge denying pitt the consent right she owed him and the right of first refusal her business entity owed his. they agreed never to sell interests in miraval without the other's consent. >> on the part of angelina we're talking about her sale and the proceeds she received from that sale. those could be in jeopardy. when we're talking about brad, what we're looking at is his ability to continue operations. if he wants to continue with his percentage, he has to coordinate with the new ownership. >> reporter: according to the lawsuit the former a-list couple purchased it in 2008 for over $28 million as a home to share with their children and the

zohreen, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, whit. we've seen it from vanderbilt university to usc, over 300 protests against sexual assault at america's college campuses and demands for more education, accountability and prevention and now a major social media company is stepping in to help. this morning, campus safety program it's on us and snapchat are teaming up to help keep college kids safer on campus. the organization says sexual assaults are most common between move-in day and thanksgiving break. they call it the red zone where college kids have little to no close friend groups and no experience with alcohol. and with students returning this past fall for the first time since the pandemic shutdown, experts said campuses would see a double red zone. >> we also have students who are academically sophomores but socially and culturally freshmen coming to campus. when campus is re-opened for the first time to in-person living and learning since march 2020

without strict covid restriction, we saw a surge of sexual assaults take place. >> reporter: the statistics are alarming. one in four college women will be sexually assaulted during their time on campus and for students of color with disabilities, undocumented or lgbtq plus, those rates are higher. to raise awareness and add an extra layer of safety, students will now be able to share their location with individual friends via snapchat's snap maps. >> the new live location sharing feature with snap map will allow parties to both opt in to sharing their live location with one another. if you have an android and your friend has an iphone you will share your live location with them through snap map. >> reporter: for secondhi that y fr su o if we ever go out we make sure we go out in groups. you know, make sure no one is by themselves. >> reporter: the former "dance mom" star and her mom holly

to not be in front of the camera just because it's a different thing. it's kind of, you know, to work with great actors, we have a great cast, adam, chris walken, john turturro, patricia arquette. there's just amazing actors to work with. as a director, it's kind of like you realize how weird and hard acting is. it's just hard to do and so i kind of enjoy the relief of not having to get in front of the camera. >> you all make it look so easy, what kind of director is ben? >> ben is -- >> michael, you went to space, right? good morning, america. black girls surf. >> that's right. we are back with our black history month, the great adventure. look at the diversity, inclusion in outdoor activities. that was amazing maizy, a 10-year-old surfer and one of the star students our janai norman got to hang out with at the beach. hey, janai. how was that experience? >> it was fun. i wasn't quite hanging ten. i was more like hanging six, seven. michael, here's a question. can you swim? >> yes, of course. >> you can? >> not for long. >> see, i didn't think so. there are stereotypes in sports and outdoor activity, what is it. >> that black people don't swim. >> that we don't get in the water but more and more groups

are trying to change that. i believe that you can swim, michael, but athletes like maizy are helping lead the way. >> reporter: whether on the ground, in the sky or in the water, for years, outdoor sports have lagged behind in diversity, but recently the face of adventure h l ree inutdoor spaces exists. a recent report showing only 9% of outdoor adventurers are black. groups like this camp -- ♪ black people in the woods ♪ >> reporter: black girls trekking. >> the outdoors is for everyone. we're getting outdoors. we're breaking stereotypes. >> reporter: and outdoor afro. >> i wish people knew how peaceful it is being out here. >> reporter: all trying to change that. one sport that's already seeing ripples of change is surfing. >> that's it right there. >> reporter: black girls surf founder ronda harper is hoping

to raise visibility and train aspiring black surfers to be future queens of the crest. ♪ encouraging future new generations of black surfers that they not only belong but that they can also compete with the best. >> now there's a boom but in professional surfing still to this day we don't have short board african american or afro surfer at all in the pros. that's my job now is to find that girl, put them in that spot so that we are fully represented. >> reporter: one of her star students is 10-year-old maizy gordon. what do you like most about surfing? >> probably the waves. how big they are, how small they are, depending but also i just like doing turns. it's just fun. all her dreams definitely ay aren't. she's putting in the work to be a future face of surfing. is your goal to go to the olympics? >> yes, it is. i expect to be on the olympics
