starting tomorrow, february 19, 2022. >> oakland unified staff, students, and parents vowing to begin a hunger strike tomorrow and continue the protest of school closures. it comes after an emergency meeting of the school board during which board members voted down a proposal to modify the closure plan that has been so controversial. thank you for joining us, i'm dan ashley. let's get to luz pena in the newsroom. what an intense meeting. >> so intense. a very emotional meeting that lasted three hours. the conclusion, no it aggravated students and community members more who are vowing to go on another hunger strike. tonight's meeting was specifically about three of 11 schools. deciding to close or merge over the next two years. an emergency meeting by the oakland school board to consider a proposal to postpone the closure of two schools and

restructuring of another ended like this. >> amendment fails. >> thank you for that -- >> you put on this show, you think it will work? this will not stop anything, this is the start of it. >> the boardmember calling out his colleagues after the meeting failed to find a new resolution. the teachers who held a hunger strike for 18 days in hopes to prevent the closures accused the board of holding the emergency meeting to persuade them to end the strike and not to find common ground. >> the only reason this meeting is happening is so we can end our hunger strike. >> multiple students vowing to begin their own hunger strike saturday. >> you have declared war on us, i as a student, someone growing and developing, will put my body on the line with educators. >> closing down 20% of schools to save 2% of our budget. i thought we were better than this.

i'm forced to sacrifice my own health. >> students also threatened to organize and recall several school board members. >> you still voted against us. you voted against the people you're here to represent. we will make sure every single 16 and 17-year-old registers to about. >> the school district said the closures are necessary due to declining enrollment and budget deficit. the president of the oakland education association asking for more time. >> having a year allows us to have engagement process that was denied to the community, that was denied to families. >> several board members, including the board president, highlighted there's -- their stance. >> we must use the next 1.5 years for implementation. the money we will save in school consolidations. >> declining enrollment in

area. on the heels of the governor's new plan to move california from pandemic to endemic faith, san -- endemic phase, -- sending students home with covid-19 rapid tests before presidents week. amanda del castillo io explains the importance of the franklin mckinley school district. >> more than 6000 antigen rapid tests when across san jose's franklin mckinley school district. tests taken before monday, february 20, after the long president's week break. >> we learned the rapid tests were an important safety measure. >> which falls in line with the new covid-19 pandemic response involving lessons learned over the last two years and applying them. an infectious disease physician at stanford says beyond testing, the holiday break happens to be well-timed. >> we have the great benefit the incidence and new cases coming down quickly right now.

>> one long time open salon -- owner is facing challenges. nearly all of her belongings were stolen from a storage facility. the young melinda explains the crooks are getting craftier.

>> i've never had anybody take anything from me. to see it on video was like whoa. it was a shock. >> she's been a hairstylist for 25 years. she owns studio 99 salon for 10 years. opening her second location at the end of 2019. it was a dream come true. >> started from the ground up. i put in floors and everything. the pandemic hit. >> like all salons. >> we were shut down. i maxed out my savings to where i was using credit cards. >> november of 2020, she put everything in storage in oakley where she lives, closing the location for good. she planned to open a new second location this spring. this week, she got a call from the storage facility with bad news. >> three people had three dollies and it seemed to be

about 10 minutes and they were out of their. >> as seen is this video, the unit was broken into. the suspect allegedly rented a unit on february 5 and can be seen on surveillance accessing and removing nearly all of her belongings the next day. >> it is a slap in the face when someone steals your stuff you work so hard for. it did not come easy. >> i spoke with three storage unit facilities. they say it is the new mo for crooks. they rent a unit to gain access to the building. now have do not rent to lists. she's unsure how much insurance will cover. about $10,000 in items were stolen. despite the setbacks, she is determined to find a new location and says it is the support of others keeping her going. >> i have been doing this for 25 years by myself. i know i'm not going to get my stuff back. i did work hard. >> in oakland, deon lynn.

>> wish her the best. keep tabs on her progress. new developments with uc berkeley. governor newsom getting involved in the court case that could resolve in the school cutting its coming income -- incoming freshman class. he's urging the supreme court in a brief to stay a lower court's order. the expansion of the campus led to a judge ordering enrollment to be capped. the governor released this statement. "we can't let a lawsuit get on the way of thousands of students who are our future leaders and innovators. i urge the supreme court to step in to ensure we are expanding access to higher education and opportunity, not blocking it." progress being made on construction of the armenian american museum and cultural center of california in glendale. home to one of the largest armenian communities in the country.

>> this will make you smile. a reunion 12 years in the making. zoe was reunited wted wted wtede in stockton after being reported missing in 2010 in lafayette by her owner. her owner went to the store for 20 minutes, and zoe was gone. fast forward, and animal services officer in stockton responded to a stray dog. the officer ran the microchip and it came back as zoe. >> i was in shock. i definitely did not expect this to ever happen. really excited. hopefully bring her back, get her healthy. let her live the rest of her life. >> zoe's owners now live in

times i've thought to myself, "can't we just go to dinner?" and, like, can't we just have a cocktail, like all the other women's groups out there? you know, everyone's just going out and having drinks. >> our girls nights out are different. >> it's a little challenging sometimes to kind of, you know, you've got your whole life going on, and you're like, "oh, my gosh, how am i gonna plan my gno next week? it's coming, and i've got nothing." and that's when you have to really kind of -- >> then you get creative. >> ...get creative. >> people are always coming up to me, all the time, "what about this, what about jumping out a plane?" i go, "is it on a monday night, is it $20?" no. >> no bungee, no jumping out of anywhere. i feel like that's where this all ends, when you make me jump out of a plane. >> literally, i could end. trust me, when i get the e-mail, and nicole's saying we're knitting, you know, i don't want to do it, i don't want to go, but of course i go. and there has been times, you can imagine through the years where it's late, you're tired from a long day of work, but you go. you may even begrudgingly go.

there has never been a time that i've left our girls night out not smiling and feeling better. >> there's a lot that's happened in between. you know, children have been born, parents have died, job changes, world events. there's been so much that's changed for all of us. and we all got -- we all went from i think, you know, certain phases of our careers or our lives having plenty of time to hang out with friends to having zero time. and so knowing that there's this monthly, like, this is on the calendar, the second monday of the month, it is going to happen, it actually became that sort of bright light in each month. >> i was on a date with a greek, and i -- >> every story begins that way. >> a lot of the times, our friends, our community, they see what we do each month, and they say, "i want to try it, i want to try it." so hopefully, we can inspire others. >> it's an automatic get together with your sisters that you may not be related by blood, but we're related by eyebrow maintenance. and just, we share such a common bond. just k
