reporter. ryan curry has a look at some of the preparations behind the parade and the hopes for a brighter year ahead. crews are securing the details on each float ahead of the parade saturday evening. yeah, we're just in specting everything and and maybe done. stephanie mauffson's team want to make sure the floats look as good as possible when they head down market street during the parades anticipated return. it was canceled last year due to the pandemic. it's great to be back here right now because the hard work is the hard part. this is the this is the payoff coming out seeing people. enjoy. work we put into it most of the floats have a decorated tiger the symbol for this year's chinese new year the year of the tiger represents bravery and confidence at the street fair saturday in chinatown those we spoke with say those traits are something everyone should embrace especially if the community wants to heal from the difficulties from the past two years a lot of the crimes that

are happy. you feel lonely even for us we feel lonely and coming out to remind us. i wear a community, you know, there's a lot of us here hudson lau runs a nonprofit. asians are strong a group dedicated to empowering the asian community. he says, hopefully the parade will remind everyone how important the asian culture is to the bay area. it's been a rough couple of years and the last month has been pretty horrible for our community. so coming out and showing people that we don't have to be afraid that we don't have to stay home as hundreds once again crowded the new year. divides lau says it reminds him the strength of the bay area community can overcome any obstacle yet to step away from all the bad and remember the good because that's what that hope. in san francisco rn the word tho mind is resilience. all right, once again taking a live. look outside as the chinese new year parade gets kicked off in just a few minutes. this is of course the largest chinese new year parade outside

of asia, and we've been missing it for the past year an event that draws hundreds of thousands of people from all across the bay area and truly the world you see there. everyone masked up and ready to celebrate we will join in in just a few minutes live later on in show or muni says it is celebrating the chinese new year by offer. free service and additional safety measures this weekend. the agency says it has muni transit ambassadors on the buses and at bus stops in chinatown to assist riders and support bus operators this free service began this morning at 5 and last through 5 am monday morning. it includes the cable cars you won't need to your clipper card or activate a muni mobile ticket when you get on board. now also this weekend bart is doing something it's never done before all five lines will be in service on sundays starting tomorrow drains will also be running until midnight on sunday for the first time since the start of the pandemic.

moving on to developing news now ukraine's president today called for russian president vladimir putin. eat and seek a resolution to the crisis this unity march you see here was held in love you ukraine today as others flee their homes under a threat of war from russia. abc's aaron kuttersky says russian backed separatists are urging people in eastern ukraine to evacuate. amid, escalating tensions between ukraine and russia the us is continuing to warn russia could invade ukraine any day president biden told reporters friday. he's convinced russian president putin has decided to take military action, but the president said diplomatic resolutions remained a possibility asked about it today. biden didn't answer. what's the latest on ukraine mr. president? you us officials. say more than 150,000 russian troops are mass near ukraine's borders new satellite images showing russian military. activity building up in belarus crimea and western russia russia

unprecedented economic cost aaron kitursky abc news levy, ukraine in the east bay the search is on for a woman 29 year old kimani mcalpin was last seen five days ago in el cerrito as she left to take a walk. she's from the los angeles area and is visiting family. there was a sighting of her in uptown oakland on tuesday friends say she may be disoriented. parents students and teachers are rallying in oakland to try to save schools under threat of being closed or consolidated. they gathered this afternoon. to come up with ways to keep campuses open they're calling on the governor to intervene and are considering a teacher walkout along with putting pressure on board members to find alternatives to consolidation. today's town hall follows an emotional friday night oakland school board meeting where members rejected a proposal to postpone the closure of two schools and the restructuring of

another students last night vowed to start their own hunger strike. moving to covid headlines now police today pushed back against a crowd that was protesting covid mandates in canada for the past three weeks officers arrested or drove out protesters to control of the streets all but one state hawaii is now lifting ore planning to lift mask mandates, california lifted its mandate last wednesday. but individual counties can opt to keep it. sonoma county health officials said today that 1 million doses of covid-19 vaccine have been administered there 80% of those eligible are now fully vaccinated while 60% have received their booster shot. well just ahead. it is a day to honor japanese americans who were incarcerated during world war two we check out an event today in the bay area that marks that dark time in history and seeks to safeguard the civil rights of all americans. ended up being a lot more

9066 from speakers who described how their families were sent to internment camps all around the country steve. akamoto was interred with his family when he was weeks old and what is now at the tanforan mall in san bruno, and there's a lot of young japanese children who never heard this from their parents or grandparents because when they home from the camps they were either ashamed they were upset or they were told by the government. don't be japanese. earlier this month nakamoto helped break ground on a memorial near the san bruno bart station to honor those who were wrongly imprisoned by the executive order. well the black history month celebration today in milpitas honored six people for their contributions to historically black colleges and universities. those recognized included fremont's fire chief. artist jacobson ohlone colleges, dr. eric bishop and dr. leanne

osborne the first black deaf administrator at california school for the deaf in fremont. i see them doing the hard work. doing the work day in and day out and the determination the perseverance the high integrity of character and bringing out of thinking out of the box. the event was held at albert augustine junior memorial park of sunny hills that park is named after a leader of the black community who lived in the sunny hills neighborhood the very first planned racially integrated community in the united states. well, it's 175 years since the american pioneer group the donner party rescuers sent out to help those left behind this week. another group saddled up at the historic johnson ranch near wheatland to retrace their steps for extreme athletes followed. the relief party's 100 mile route on foot as well as horseback. bob crowley had been planting this trip for eight years.

breathtaking video coming out of miami where if you look closely there, it is a helicopter just goes down to a very close to swimmers at the beach two people on board. the helicopter were taken to the hospital the good news. they were not seriously hurt a third person on the helicopter was not injured. miami beach fire department said if the crash had happened just 50 yards more inland. it would have been a mass. t event they say it is quote incredible and insane that no one was hurt. well back in february 1939 the world's fair opened on treasure island. it celebrated san francisco's two. newly built bridges the bay bridge in 1936 and the golden gate a year later this weekend vintage boats and planes kicked off a series of events celebrating treasure island's world's fair. it marked the 80th anniversary of the world's fair which those celebratory anniversary celebrations. i should say, we're delayed because of the pandemic treasure island was built for the fair

increasing clouds during the overnight and early morning hours. i'll be a little bit of fog mix in there as well near the bay and the coast and some of the inland valleys and we've got some clearing later in the day tomorrow going into tomorrow evening and it'll be getting a little bit gusty going. monday overnight low temperatures mainly in the low to mid 40s from inland to the bay and coast but some locations in the far north will drop into the upper 30s ukiah lakeport and santa rosa highs tomorrow under partly cloudy skies mid-50s at the coast about 59 here in san francisco right around the bay shoreline. we'll see mainly low 60s in on east bay mainly mid-60s up in the north bay. the highest reading will be about 67 ad santa rosa. here's our forecast animation beginning on monday notice. we'll have a bright breezy day on monday, but then light rain comes into the bay area on tuesday mixed in with well snow in the sierra, but we may have a mix of rain and snow in some of the higher elevations here in the bay area and then wednesday the wind just blows everything away. skies will clear but we're gonna have some cold cold weather settling in wednesday, thursday and friday.

is part of this year's chinese new year celebration abc 7's parent company disney has a booth at the community street fair in chinatown for turning red the animated film follows mei lee as she navigates adolescence and discovers that she turns into a red panda when her emotions run too high this community street fair features more than 100 booths and entertainment. it runs once again tomorrow from 9 am to 5 pm turning red launches exclusively on disney. plus on march 11th, i had a chance to check it out my favorite those roasted chestnuts. alright once again taking a live look outside along market and second as the chinese new year parade gets underway. it looks like all of those floats are ready to go. we have the return of all those spectators. can't wait to bring you more
