>> building a better bay area, moving forward and finding solutions. this is abc seven news. >> on the brink, intelligence shows russia has taken new steps to execute a plan in ukraine. you're watching abc seven news at 5:00 live on abc news seven. right away we begin with those developing news interests where a possible tipping point in ukraine has tensions happening. lower-level russian commanders received orders to invade ukraine. there were worrying signs. in ukraine's rest of east, more worrying signs russia has no plans to back down. russian controlled rebels made new and unsubstantiated claims about coming under threat from ukraine.

russian president vladimir putin can justify an invasion. >> he has been very deliberate in terms of assembling the right kind of combat and combat support capability. the kinds of things you would need to conduct a successful invasion. anchor: lloyd austin told abc news that russia had amassed enough firepower to take the ukrainian capital. >> if he employs that kind of combat power, it will create enormous casualties within a civilian population. anchor: russia has denied plans to invade but after test firing nuclear capable ballistic missiles, russia extended military drills in belarus instead of withdrawing forces as planned raising fears of an imminent invasion. vice president kamala harris says there is still hope for diplomatic solution. >> we are looking at a moment that is very decisive. anchor: the french president

tried to dissuade vladimir putin from an attack but according to the kremlin, vladimir putin expressed concern about a deterioration in eastern ukraine blaming ukraine for its. >> we still hope and wish that vladimir putin would take the diplomatic path. anchor: president biden meeting with his national security team. the u.s. believes war is the reality. as secretary of state antony blinken put it today, everything suggests that we are on the brink of an invasion. demonstrations in support of ukraine are happening all over the country including here in the bay area. abc seven news reporter tim johns went to san francisco earlier today and has a look at the emotional toll the russian threat is having on ukrainian americans. reporter: the emotional toll impacting ukrainian americans in the bay area.

many came out saying they are standing out not just for ukrainian sovereignty but for values such as freedom and democracy. the tensions continue to rise in ukraine and some 6000 miles away along san francisco's embarcadero, dozens of show up in front of the ferry building to show their support for the eastern european nation. >> we find this absolutely disgusting that the world does not stand up to vladimir putin in the way that it should and stop war in ukraine. reporter: he is the cochairmen of a charity based in palo alto and he said he worries that the country of his birth is on the brink of a major catastrophe. >> i am angry and anxious. you more worried for my family and i am worried for all of the families of the ukrainians that will need to evacuate or fight. reporter: organizers estimate 150 people showed up to the rally.

confirmed cases yesterday barely exceeded 1000. a sharp downturn from the more than 800,005 weeks ago. to the changing forecast as we take a live look outside. things are a little cooler outside today than yesterday. spencer christian joining us and we have a little bit of rain to look forward to. spencer: emphasizing a little bit but the big thing is though sharp cooldown we are experiencing that is underway already. those in the low to mid 30's for the inland valleys and that is just the beginning. it will be much colder over the next few nights. rain approaching the bay area tomorrow and on tuesday, light rain becomes widespread, snow in the sierra and snow at the higher elevations in bay area. it will all be gone wednesday but wednesday and thursday mornings we expect temperatures to drop into the 20's in many bay locations. a chill is coming our way.

draymond green. tmz is reporting his home was broken into during super bowl weekend. with more than $1 million in jewelry and other items were stolen. green was in los angeles at the time attending the super bowl. he returned home to find his home had been ransacked. it is unclear if anyone was at home during the time of the break in. residents in south lake tahoe say there is a serial burglar that has hit dozens of homes in recent area and he is scarier than your average crock. a 500 pound bear is being blamed for about 40 break-ins. he has earned the nickname of hank the tank for some of the damage he has left behind. police recently found him inside a house he entered through a window. he is still on the loose and putting a scare into locals. >> it is really scary because we used to be able to go on walks and bike rides by ourselves. >> now we bring a bear horn.
