we spoke with members of the south bay jewish community about these hurtful events. >> hate has no place. it never seems to stop. over the weekend, police said dozens of flyers, like this one, were distributed. flyers blaming the covid-19 pandemic on jewish officials. >> we are blamed for all kinds of things by every movement you can think of, through the generation. it is an irrational hatred that is part of the world that we live in. >> i feel it personally. reporter: the district attorney is a member and of the jewish community and believes hate drove these wires. no matter how hurtful the words were, police are investigating this as a hate incident and not a crime. >> a crime is when the words cross over into some sort of physical assault or property damage. >> it is scary, this is one of

the things we're dealing with in the social media age. reporter: the events across the country are emotional, but silence will not solve anything, because it is somehow the biggest events in the past became even worse. >> our silence only allows for hate speech and hate incident or incidences to grow. we cannot be quiet. reporter: the members of the jewish community we spoke with encouraged others to speak out. they hope this can be a learning lesson. >> maybe tease him about judaism and jewish history and try to educate them about this. honestly, if we find the person or people who did it, i invite them to my house for seder. >> it is an act of kindness. if every person would be nice to somebody or showed act of kindness or do something good in the world, that will counterbalance the negative. every act of goodness is like a light that is shiny and will dispel a tremendous amount of darkness.

inside. the decision on masks statewide could come a week from today. ama: omicron is finally waning which means the covert staffing shortage in san francisco schools is starting to ease. we focus on education. i spoke with the unified chief human resources officer to see how things are going what the district could use more of. >> we are seeing more teachers coming to work and more educators coming to work. more staff is coming to work. almost more importantly, more substitutes are picking up jobs. reporter: things are stabilizing for sfusd. more substitutes are still needed. to help entice candidates, pending approval by the board of education, they are raising the rate of pay to be competitive with other districts. the job requirements are changing. it is now possible to work as a substitute without a bachelors degree.

>> people who do not have a bachelors, does not mean anyone can walk in off the street and be a substitute. there are a number of requirements to be a substitute teacher. having a bachelors degree was one of that is not always necessary for every substitute teaching role. reporter: they stress that the districts ability to achieve its equity vision for students rest and passionate, qualified, skilled human beings. it is grateful for every single person helping to keep kids learning. >> it is not enough to keep kids open. they need to be learning every single day and go home and say here's what i learned today that makes me just a little smarter and a little closer to achieving my dreams. ama: if you're considering being a substitute, a couple of things to keep in mind. the district supplies all ppe. it can be a great part-time opportunity to supplement what you are already doing. there is a possibility of becoming a full-time teacher. dan: the fight to save oakland
