our european allies, the u.s. would join them in sanctioning president putin and foreign minister lavrov and members of the national security team. dan: ukraine says it is in the initial stage of talks with russia. estate department spokesperson says the diplomatic discussion cannot succeed as long as russia attacked ukraine. nato marks the first time they have activated the potentially 40,000 person force for deterrence a defense. ama: we are seeing shows of support for ukraine across the globe. let marks such as the foot tower lit up in the colors of the ukrainian flag. there also shows a solidarity coming from the russian community in the bay area. reporter: getting members of the russian community to talk about the invasion of ukraine was a challenge. a number of businesses i declined to go on camera. they said they are praying for

peace. until i approached one establishment showing their solidarity with ukraine in a big way. as the battle freak control over ukraine's capital wages on, with the refugee crisis intensifying at trina bus stations, hundreds in the ukrainian community descended on san francisco city hall this week. ♪ perhaps one of the most solid shows of solidarity is up from a russian bathhouse. >> it doesn't matter what the car is or what things you're wearing. everybody is equal. reporter: that message sent to tens of thousands on their email list and displayed prominently on their website. this is the weekend of ukraine where free admission will be granted to those with ukrainian passports. >> responses been amazing. had a lot of ukrainians, families been separated. the biggest thing i want people to know, it is not the russian

i appreciate your time. >> good to be with you. dan: yesterday, how speaker pelosi called putin an evil man doing bad things. how would you characterize that statement and what vladimir putin has done? >> i agree with her. i think he is a diabolical desperate. -- diabolical despot. his egomaniacal actions are going to cause the death of ukrainians. he has a stream of re-creating the soviet union. it was created in 1922, 100 years ago. i think part of his interest is to create a legacy that he has somehow re-created the soviet union by taking over ukraine. it is a horrific act. it should be repelled at every junction. dan: what is happening in congress in terms of discussions and action being taken in washington? how are you planning to respond?

we hear with the president is doing, what is congress able to do? >> by executive orders of the present has been able to impose severe sanctions. he is now asking for and will receive, in a bipartisan fashion, anywhere from 4 billion dollars to $6 billion to aid the ukrainian people, in terms of humanitarian assistance and additional weapon systems they need to defend themselves. dan: is there any likelihood that we will get dragged into this further? more directly? >> i can't answer that question. i think we are going to stand with the ukrainian people in every way we can. we are not anxious to get into yet another war after just getting out of afghanistan. that is not supported by the american people. they're very supportive of

sobbing as may sanctions on russia as possible, including the most recent decision today to sanction president putin and his foreign minister lavrov. i think we have to take every imaginable step to shut them down. whether it is by all the banks being prevented from acting. the export actions we have taken, preventing exports from being sent to russia are going to have a huge effect. they are very reliant on our microelectronics for everything from computer systems to weapon systems. by shutting that off, we are going to slowly but surely increase the stranglehold on them economically. dan: surely it sanctions were part of his calculus as he watched this invasion. he must've anticipated this. you think it will be any kind of deterrence? >> i think he did factor this in

to his decision. but i don't think he factored in the extent that he is going to experience this. we have never put these kind of export controls on a country. it is going to shut down about 70% of their electronics and high import products. about 50% when you include europe and the united states. what president biden has done effectively is unify all of western europe with the united states. nato is stronger today than it has ever been. you have both finland and sweden wanting to join nato. it is had the reverse impact that i think putin was expecting. i think the impact on going to be quite significant. dan: we shall see. i know you have busywork there

gauge how to limit the virus while protecting those most at risk. ama: under these metrics, people throughout the bay area should not need to wear masks. it is a case-by-case business depending on the local rules. dr. patel says you should keep those masks handy in case rates take up again. dan: the governor's office announced that human services secretary will -- the masking rules for schools would stay in place until least february 28, monday. governor's office is not signaling what will be announced on monday. also, newsome announced his rolling back all but 5% of the executive order provisions he put in place at the start of the pandemic. the rest will be terminated at the end of june. most of the provisions relate to government processes. ama: president biden nominated

and dutch for them and joins us live. reporter: court wrapped just before 3:00 this afternoon. she was on the stand. she's going to continue her testimony on monday morning. things did get contentious as peterson's attorney was questioning her about statements she gave in the jury selection process in the trial 18 years ago. she has been given immunity to perjury. if it is found she lied to get on the jury, she is not going to get entrapped -- and trouble. but peterson may get a new trial. we were here as she arrived. the judge did not allow still photographers or sketch artists to show her in the courtroom. peterson was in the courtroom as work is family members and lacey peterson. -- family members of him and lacey peterson. the jury. she was questioned why she did

not disclose that she had a restraining order while she was pregnant, saying at the time she fears for her unborn child. she also pushed back against court documents saying her live-in boyfriend at the time had assaulted her while she was pregnant. she said it was her who hit him. legal analyst weighed in on what went in -- on in the hearing. >> it is clearly important and the defendant isn't quite old 12 impartial jurors. yes, i think this is going the way the defense once it go. reporter: not only was she questioned about past restraining orders, she was questioned about her financial history. fellow juror could testify that she said she was having financial issues at the time and had joked about a book and movie deal after the trial ended. again, she is going to be coming back to the stand monday morning. her attorney did not want to comment. we did speak with him outside

ama: chp officials have made an arrest in a shooting from last year. one person was shot inside their vehicle which was hit by multiple -- bullets. 27-year-old larry is with murder, attempted murder and shooting into an occupied vehicle. he was already in custody for an unrelated incident. dan: the oakland police department is investigating a shooting in ashtray park. they found 2 -- estuary park. the victims were transferred to a local hospital.

police are searching for the suspects who were seen in a great four-door honda with the missing bumper. anyone with information is asked to please contact the oakland police department. ama: the city of oakland is calling it a major step forward in the move to stop illegal dumping. 10 new surveillance cameras are up in areas identified as illegal dumping spots. they will be used to case -- build cases against offenders with fines up to a thousand dollars. >> we are going to do more to enforce our laws against illegal dumping by going to the source, making sure we are holding accountable those repeat offenders were trashing our neighborhoods. ama: illegal dumping has long been a problem in oakland. it is only gotten worse in recent years. an analysis by the chronicle found that enough garbage was dumped in oakland to cover 13 football field with trash three feet high. dan: that is a staggering
