>> ian pannell is in kyiv, has the latest. >> reporter: good morning, gio. the city is eerily quiet. ever now and again, we can hear the sound of gunfire or sirens. the streets are almost abandoned. it's saturday afternoon now in the adapt of ukraine, europe's largest country. the fighting here seems to have subsided for the moment but of course the fear is a large-scale offensive to take the capital is coming and interestingly, the ukrainian defense minister just said the enemy is targeting airfields and military sites in other parts of the country. this morning, russian troops moving deeper into the ukrainian capital, the city facing a potential siege. despite claims civilians aren't being targeted, in this social media post you can see an apartment building in the city struck this morning. it's unclear by whom, incredibly

this woman and her family was inside the building. she said her kid's room is just a hole. if she had been in there she wouldn't have survived. overnight, battle raging in parts of city but ukrainians mounting a solid defense so far. ukrainian president zelenskyy outside in central kyiv saying, we are defending our country. the truth is our land. a senior pentagon official telling abc news, the first two days haven't gone as well as the russians expected. but it's believed they are well supplied and execute a coordinated assault on kyiv. zelenskyy warning last night that the coming hours would be tough, saying, we cannot lose kyiv. the military relaxing restrictions on who can join the forces. some wearing yellow arm bands instead of uniforms. 18,000 weapons have been handed

out to volunteers to help in the fight. northwest of kyiv, this bridge reportedly destroyed to slow russians advancements. new satellite images showing russian military deployments in southern belarus, including ground transport helicopters just 20 miles from the border with ukraine. gunshots ringing out on this train platform as hundreds attempt to boarddee to this woman and her family are aa her husband expects to be drafted. she could be forced to leave him behind when the time comes. >> today was the first time that we actually looked at the map and, you know, we're trying to figure out the best way for me and my child to travel, if i had to flee. >> reporter: guys, the country is now awash with these heartbreaking stories. this is a country, this is a city, 21st century, modern

developed, one week ago it was living in a time of peace and relative prosperity. today it's living in a middle of a war that these people did not choose. families are hunkered down in subway stations. families are at home, afraid, terrified and feeling alone. linsey? >> our hearts go out to them. ian, thank you. back here at home the white house along with u.s. allies stepping up sanctions against vladimir putin. according to a new poll 67% of americans back the u.s. and its european allies on imposing economic sanctions on russia. abc's maryalice parks joins us now with more. >> reporter: linsey, good morning. the white house is looking for ways to keep helping ukraine. overnight the white house authorizing $350 million in immediate military assistance, that brings the total of u.s. military assistance to ukraine this year to a $1 billion. we also learned that late yesterday the white house

requested more than $6 billion for funding for the department of defense, cyberdefense and humanitarian aid. the nato alliance for the first time yesterday activated its rapid response force, president biden has insisted that troops won't be sent into ukraine, but that the u.s. and its allies will be ready to defend nato countries if putin brings the fight there. on friday, the u.s., the uk and the european union all announced those new sanctions directly on russian president vladimir putin as well as his foreign minister lavrov and two other senior russian officials. this move is largely symbolic, putin's assets in the u.s. are hard to identify but still this is a rare move. president biden is in wilmington for a memorial service for a family member but he'll continue to meet with members of his national security team. eva. >> maryalice for us in delaware. now to how the russian

invasion of ukraine impacts the global economy. deirdre bolton has more, including how it could affect your wallet. >> i think it's worth noting that we don't import a ton from russia but the global effects of this conflict could end up hitting us all in the wallet. russia among the top oil producers. right now, national average price at the pump about $3.50 per gallon, we could see that jump to $4 in coming weeks, that hits lower income households the most. they spend a much higher share of their income on gasoline. the price of airline tickets may also go up if carriers pass that higher cost of jet fuel on to passengers. home heating prices likely to rise. food prices even from their current pandemic highs since transporting food costs more as diesel for trucks becomes even more expensive. palladium is used in making cars and trucks among other industries, palladium goes into

they're getting a lot of information, so the first thing parents need to do is, find out what your kids know because you don't want to overwhelm them with information. but also be prepared for the conversation, you need to do your homework, know about the situation and know what you're going to say. a discussion with an 8-year-old will be totally different with 12-year-old. >> we know kids always have lots of questions, how can you talk about a situation like this when you don't have all the answers? >> right, well, it's okay not to have all the answers, right, but you want to be able to correct any misinformation especially if they're little. you want to reassure them and comfort them. let them know everything is going to be okay. if your child says there's a war, mommy, i'm really scared. you want to tell them, there's a war, it's scary, it's far away, you'll be fine. >> what do you think is the best way to reassure them?

>> well, you know, it's really important for parents to be calm, right, if we're nervous, frantic and anxious our kids are more likely to be frantic nervous and anxious, so you're going to want to tell them they're going to be safe and not to worry. >> what are your tips for parents who are navigating through already-difficult times? >> yeah, this is a really tough situation, we're al stressed, we're all a little worried, right, so the first thing you want to do is when you go into a situation like this, have age-appropriate conversations with children, give comforting answers. also, and this is really important, find ways for your family to de-stress together, focus on fun for a little bit when you're not talking about current events or what's going on in the world. make sure everyone that there's time to be together and relax and find comfort with one another. >> some good tips for us this morning. thank you so much for being with us. now to a history-making day in d.c., president biden nominating judge ketanji brown

jackson to fill justice breyer's seat, if confirmed she'll be the first black woman to serve on the supreme court. rachel scott joins us with more. good morning again, rachel. >> reporter: good morning, 233 years, 115 supreme court justices. 108 of those have been white men, a black woman has never been nominated, until now. president biden making good on that campaign promise, nominating the first black woman to the bench. judge ketanji brown jackson is her name. the president saying that he wants the courts to look more like america. judge jackson brings nearly a decade of experience on the federal bench. she's currently serving on the d.c. circuit. she was confirmed with republican support. she's the daughter of school teachers, grew up the in miami, florida, and she credits her father for setting her on the path a life of public service.

news this morning. the crisis in ukraine intensifying as russian forces press toward ukraine's capital. in a social media video president zelenskyy vowing to keep fighting. amid the conflict the humanitarian crisis looming. >> and curtis reeves found not guilty. the 79-year-old was on trial for the shooting of chad olson after a dispute over a cell phone used in a movie theater. the jury cleared reeves of second-degree murder and aggravated assault charges. and the cdc relaxing its mask guidelines for about 70% of americans. the agency labeling u.s. counties red, yellow or green, based on their covid levels. the cdc says yellow and green counties, or those counties with medium or low levels of covid, no longer need to wear a mask indoors. now the play of the day, "binge this."

i said, you know, she's in heaven. he said, well i want to see her. i started showing him pictures. and he was like, no i want to go to heaven to see her. kids drop it after a little bit. this was for several days and weeks. we were on a plane once, he was looking out the window, i don't see her? i was like, you don't see who? he was like, grandma p. >> you know, linsey, i was 10 when i lost my grandma, and i remember all those questions and what that felt like. how do you make that topic digestible for kids? >> there was an educator who came on the show once who said if kids are old enough to ask the question they're old enough to hear the answer. i think it's so important that we kind of them the best possible explanations so they have understanding. they don't go somewhere else to hear about it.

for me within our household, the easiest way for me to talk about death was to talk about heaven, and that was i saw gave my son some consolation. the idea that he was going to be reunited, that he was going to see her again really gave asn l covid and more than 200,000 kids who have been orphaned by covid in the last two years, kids are missing mom and dad and grandma and grandpa and i think we need to address it in some way. this is not a hard-hitting book about death. this is a whimsical look of a little boy trying to figure out to take a trampoline or a spaceship to get to heaven. >> what's the reaction been to the book? >> you know, people are saying they end up crying, so i think that's a good thing, that
