regular gas patrick. dehon with gasbuddy says that's a sign of what's to come there will be more increases coming maybe to the tune of another 20 to 30 cents a gallon. i do expect that the national average in the united states will hit the $4 a gallon mark. that's probably something that's less than two or three weeks away dahan says, that's when we're likely to set all-time new records in the us and here in california specifically in san francisco and la it's the first time a major us city hit that $5 an average mark most california cities will likely continue moving closer to 525 in the next week. we could eventually see california going to 550. that is not something we will see nationally at this point yet. han explains about 80% of the gas price increase is impacted by the crisis in ukraine the other 20 is because of the transition to summer gas prices and while congress has considered suspending the 18% federal gas tax kevin slagle with the western states

going to be here till 7 o'clock tonight taking your tax question. so anything you want to know right now write it down on your computer and send it to us one of the questions we hear a lot is about the earned income tax credit. and so we've got alexander ho here he's with united way bay area free tax help. okay. so this is a program you've got to earn about $60,000 or less. right? right. actually the earned income credit is one of the us's largest anti-poverty measures and it's best. it's targeted at low-income families with children, so generally to qualify you would need around actually under around 50,000 or less to get to earn income credit. and so basically i should bring those back. so basically what it does is it empowers people that have low income and it encourages them to continue working rather than look for welfare, correct? that's correct. so unlike other credits, it doesn't just work automatically the calculations a bit

complicated and incentivizes families or taxpayers to work. more so the more they work the more credit they get out of certain point it levels out and then it phases out once their income gets too high. it is a little bit complicated. at least it sounds that way the way you're describing it so they can use help. yes, it is definitely complicated. but to file it is actually quite simple because all a taxpayer really needs is to make sure the way to qualify is to be within a certain income range. it's calculated automatically and we just need to make sure that the taxpayer has a social security number and is a us resident or citizen. and they don't need to have had the social security number all year. just when it's time to file, right? oh, well, look if you call alexander will know that question alexander. thank you so much alexander hoe. he's with united way bay area

across it was so windy. i thought the car was going to be airborne. it was unbelievable felt like you were flying across that same sensation driving in today. it's very windy and especially in on bridges and overpasses where there's nothing to block that wind. so, let's take a look at what's going on right now. here's lived out for seven and we've got mainly clear skies, but you notice some lightning strikes and some active weather up in the northern sacramento valley some of that activity is going to wrap around and move possibly through the bay area tonight right now though. we're looking at strong wind gusts up to 47 miles per hour at oakland 41 at sfo. we've got 35 to 38 mile per hour gusts and many other locations. so no surprise. wind advisory is in effect and remains in effect until seven o'clock this evening mainly for the coast for locations right around the bay shoreline and over into the delta and the carquina strait gusts may reach as high as 50 miles per hour wind may blow unsecured objects around could blow down some tree limbs and cause a few power outages. so bear that in mind and you can see the effects of the wind on the embarcadero right now as we look in that direction from our

rooftop camera 51 degrees here in san francisco right now we have mid 50s in oakland mountain view, san jose santa clara and 50 degrees at half moon bay. and it's windy but with blue sky at the golden gate of the temperature readings up in the north bay and over the inland east bay 50 60 degrees santa rosa right now, napa 54 petaluma 53 58 at fairfield conquered 57 livermore 54 degrees and looking westward from the east bay hills camera a nice view. these are our forecast features. we will probably see a few scattered showers overnight, maybe a wintry mix as well some hail mixed in maybe some snow on the higher elevations through tomorrow morning then colder nights this weekend and a warmer pattern begins early next. week the storm coming through tonight and tomorrow morning ranks one on the abc 7 storm impact scale. so once again showers possible possibly some hail snow levels down to 2500 feet, which is why we might see some snow on our higher peaks. and of course gusty winds at the coast and bay forecast animation looks like this going into the late later night hours. we'll see some clouds returning and some pockets of moisture. so some showers are mixed in

there and possibly some hail as well and then we get a little bit of clearing early tomorrow, but by midday clouds wrapping on that storm to our east will move back into the bay area. there may be a sprinkler or two in those clouds, but looks like mainly a dry day after about midday tomorrow and going into tomorrow night the snow the snowfall the rainfall total is one amount to much the areas that have measurable rain will generally have under 500 of an inch of rain and in the sierra winter weather advisory remains an effect until 1:00 pm tomorrow snow levels now the 1500 feet most locations get about four to eight inches of snow overnight lows here in the bay area mid to up. these inland low 40s near the coast and bay tomorrow as high as will not get out of the 50s in most locations. and here's the accuweather seven-day forecast sunny or dryer a little bit milder on sunday and then a warming trend begins on monday and through all of next week. we can expect high temperatures inland around 68 to about 70 or 72 degrees in the upper mid to upper 60s right around the bay shore line. so it is going to warm up and it'll get drier larry.

elizabeth holmes is awaiting sentencing after being found guilty of defrauding investors. there's a 2020 special tonight with the latest on this case abc 7's reggie key got some details

from rebecca jarvis abc news correspondent and host of the podcast the dropout. let's talk about the sentencing which is still to come she could face up to 20 years in prison for being convicted on counts of defrauding investors. what do we think is actually going to happen? well, it's interesting reggie because the sentencing guidelines given the degree the amount of fraud that she's been convicted of above the 60 million dollar threshold. a lot of legal experts. tell me she could see more prison time as a result of that but legal experts also taken to consideration the fact that her co-conspirator sunny bell. wani is about to start his own trial and that the sentencing for elizabeth holmes was moved to after that to september. there's the possibility that her team is trying behind the scenes to work out some kind of deal with the government. i've talked to a lot of legal experts about a dozen and they say anywhere from three to 10 years is what they believe she will see as far as prison time

moving forward finding solutions. this is abc 7 news. well today marks two years from the day that governor gavin newsom first declared a state of emergency in the covid pandemic. that state of emergency is still in effect by the way the first known california death from covid was also announced two years ago today a 71 year old who had traveled and got sick after a cruise the san francisco school district announced today. that masks will no longer be required at middle and high school starting march 12 elementary school students can remove them starting april 2nd in los angeles county masks are no longer mandated in public settings like grocery stores restaurants and bars in addition. a vaccination or negative test results will no longer be needed to enter bars and most other businesses and apple says employees will be required to come into the office at least. one day a week i starting april 11th. the covid shutdown has brought awareness to the issue of mental

health and suicide rates have really soared over the past two years and now the suicide of a star stanford soccer player has reignited the discussion of mental health abc 7 news anchor deon lim joining us now with a challenging discussion that you had this morning in the newsroom. yeah, larry full transparency here. i wondered as did many people in our news from our editorial meeting this morning. why the death of katie meyer was so visible when there were many in the api community and other young people of color who die by suicide. i spoke to a parent and an lgbtq healthcare professional and they both say they aim to create more visibility. there's like imperial quality about her that you never felt burdened emotionally when you're around her. she was always bad that kind of that light. that was really dark inside. i mean, i didn't know that until

she passed that hidden pain is what ultimately led to song brown's daughter's death in may of 2018. 19 year old elizabeth wasn't accomplished violinist who was involved in many organizations dedicated to helping others yet. elizabeth never felt it was enough elizabeth's compassion and caring for others is what makes it so hard to comprehend her own internal struggles dr. jay. africa is the first openly transgender behavioral. professional in california and is marin county's director of behavioral health and recovery services. he says cases of young people who die by suicide in the aapi community are not as publicly visible for cultural reasons. it may be why stanford soccer player. katie myers death has become so public families don't want to admit that it's suicide. they don't share that because of the shame and the privacy we need to talk about it one to the stigmatize that people are reading anything help and are suffering those in the lgbtq

offer help and hope by going to abc 7 news com slash. take action. the mayors of seven of california's largest cities are throwing their support behind governor newsom's new plan to tackle the mental health crisis among the unhoused in california. the mayor is so much including san jose, sam ricardo and libby schaaf of oakland appeared together by zoom to support the proposal called care court the plan unveiled by the governor yesterday would offer more services to homeless people and others with severe mental health and addiction disorders people will be obligated to accept care if they don't they could be put into a leadership care court is a very important step forward. i think even governor newsom would be the first to admit. this is not a sufficient. solution it is a necessary one and it's an important step we need to take. under the plan counties will be required to set up a mental health branch in civil court and provide comprehensive and community-based treatment. well get ready to unplug. well, don't do it just yet. well, don't do it just yet. is your bathroom over 10 years old?

now for the four at four today. we have alma and spencer for the conversation. so some big changes. you heard for new york city. the city is dropping masks requirements for students and lifting proof of vaccine mandates for restaurants and theaters. it all takes effect next week. that means restaurants theaters and other indoor venues will no longer have to ask patrons for proof of vaccination. it comes as changes are being made to mandates across the country california has dropped its indoor mask for unvaccinated

people. so do you think we should drop the vaccine requirements as well? i'm already think i don't know. i don't pretend to know what's right and wrong these days and but it just strikes me that there isn't really much incentive to get vaccinated anymore. it seems like and we were sort of on the honor system. anyway, if for the most part yeah should have been wearing a mask if you were unvaccinated, but who knows if you were actually doing that. know spencer they should bring back the $100 gift cards. remember that incentive lottery that might help you. yeah, it's just too bad that so many people just have refused to get vaccinated. i don't think there are any persuadables out there right now, so i'm probably right, you know, it doesn't matter whether we keep the mandated and effect or not. long as the numbers are going down. yeah, that's good. that's encouraging. yeah, if we see more spikes than we may have to walk it back a little bit. so hopefully full speed ahead.

dr. john york and the york family and told them that we you know, we need to do more in terms of teachers the york family brought it immediately and what we determined to do was to give these $5,000 grants to teachers every year based upon. equation of their service commitment production and so forth and it's just been a real real privilege and a pleasure not just to give the awards but to read the applications. there's so many great teachers. we didn't set out to a war give awards to every deserving teacher but to give out awards to set an example of the degree to which we should recognize an honor the teachers to do such a great job in the nine. area counties, so we're talking five teachers 5,000 apiece who's eligible for these awards. can can anybody apply any teacher? in a teacher can apply they can be nominated by anyone they can

time i take it i learned something new. i really recommend it to anyone who has the opportunity so much to be inspired by this tour connects people. it inspires pride. i want people to take away from the tour the fact that black people were here are here and have made significant contributions that need to be documented and preserved. i was born here the mid 60s grew up here. i'm walking down the street and i'm imagining and seeing things that happened 50 years ago this neighborhood when i was a kid and and it was that desire to here with other people some of that information and knowledge about things that had happened here to tell a story of a neighborhood. you know, where the black population has been so overwhelming displaced this mural was commissioned for the tour. they wanted to basically just highlight what's going on and

what's been happening for the past 50 or so years from the california hotel stories of the black panther urban gardening the hoover foster library. we wanted to put all of these things that are mentioned in the tour into this mural in this racially changing neighborhood where black folks are being have been and continue to be displ. great rates to be able for me to see my culture reflected on these walls and reaffirms that there's a place, you know for me here there was and there will be medley jumped to mind are the former site of the saint augustine's episcopal church. where the panthers first three breakfast feeding program and also the funerals of george and jonathan jackson were there. delham's house is very important because what he did i would say
