moving forward finding solutions. this is abc 7 news. emotions running high here in the bay area tonight as some people greet loved ones arriving from ukraine bringing with them harrowing tales of escape while others get ready to say farewell. they are rushing into the war zone to help good evening and thank you for joining us. i'm amidates and i'm dan ashley. you're watching abc 7 news at five we begin tonight with the latest in ukraine where russian forces are advancing on key targets on this ninth day of the invasion gunfire and air raid sirens blared across eve as ukrainian troops continue to put up a stiff resistance tonight you can ukrainian president vladimir zalinsky delivered a sobering assessment of the war. for nine days. we have been seeing a fierce war

destroying our cities shelling our people our children residential neighborhoods churches schools destroying everything that provides a normal life. in keith, there were heartbreaking scenes of women and children boarding trains to escape the fighting while in germany hundreds of volunteers waited for their arrival with welcome signs offering to house refugees in private homes in moscow. the government blocked. says to facebook and twitter and threatens to punish anyone spreading so-called fake information about its armed forces and there are no signs that radiation had leaked during a battle for ukrainian nuclear power plant. both sides. say russian troops are not interfering with the plant's staff. here in the bay area. we're seeing the first refugees from war-torn ukraine beginning to arrive and for many that arrival is bittersweet after leaving friends family and their lives behind abc 7 news reporter cornell bernard was at san francisco international airport for some of the emotional

reunions. an emotionalmotionalmotionalmotl paulina propiak and her one-year-old son art and exhausted after a long journey escaping their beloved war-torn. country ukraine. oh, yeah, very scary in ukraine right now. lots of bombing lots of striking going on. the trip was very afraid for her son that but that's why she made a decision to leave ukraine and come to united states. cousin eugene venikoff is translating he lives in castro valley. he says it took paulina and her son five and a half days to escape their country. this was the scene paulina encountered at the border of moldova a long line of refugees. nearly 10 miles people die in every day civilian people die and soldiers dying just protecting their country. you know, it's very very difficult times. minutes earlier this reunion was happening, but donna korchuk from san jose greeting her mom

vera who arrives in san francisco with only a small suitcase to her name. no. no my dog. normal family photo no. vera says she's been taking cover for days and her own basement turned bomb shelter. am i my town is destroyed when i was coming here. i saw women with a little kids who didn't know how to save their kids. the train station she left from a ukraine was bombed minutes after she left her message to russian president putin putin so much i say mania. i want to say that putin is a crazy. maniac. there's nephew once a member of ukrainian parliament is now fighting for his country for now. she is safe. yes the most difficult for for in our situation was to convince her to leave because she was very scared nearly 1 million refugees have fled ukraine about the population of san jose these relatives. hope to apply for refugee status

allowing them to stay in the united states at sfo cornell bernard abc 7 news. and over the past week one bay area couple has raised nearly two hundred thousand dollars for ukrainian refugees with a plan to head to the ukraine romania border to hand out cash to those crossing needed abc avenues reporter tim johns caught up with a couple at their san francisco home today just hours before they headed to sfo. frolics furman watching the ongoing war in ukraine has been difficult right all the stages of grief right like anger fear, right like bargaining for us a little bit of bargaining. it and it'd be pretty hard as the world watches scenes of devastation continuing to unfold in the eastern european country. forman says he felt compelled to do something. it felt like i felt like we've got to do more felt like it's time to step up. and do something he did together with wife the pair is so far

raised nearly $200,000 now firman is catching a friday afternoon flight out of sfo and heading to the ukraine romania border to distribute the money. he's helped raise. yeah. literally we're gonna show up and we're gonna put cash in their pockets both furman and his wife were born in russia and came to the us. as jewish refugees they say they know firsthand how much a little assistance can help those who have left everything behind. i know like alex's family got here. he was like was three kids was one parent was only had 200 dollars in the pocket. that was it furman's wife. marina will stay back in san francisco, but we'll still be playing a critical role continuing to raise money and keeping people updated online. there was definitely a certain amount of guilt. over being russian i grew up moscow and i i feel really bad for what's happening there. inferman says that this is only the beginning even after he returns home to san francisco he plans on continuing to help.

anyway, he can that's not gonna take a long time. right? like there's no way that they i wish it on soon, but it's not going to end soon. so this is gonna be a marathon in san francisco tim johns abc 7 news. governor newsom wants to make sure state. actors are abiding by economic sanctions imposed on russia. he says california is standing squarely behind the ukrainian people and that means the state should not be doing business with russian entities governor newsom also urged businesses and organizations to refrain from investments and financial transaction with russia. the governor is also asking businesses to not transfer technology to russian companies a hillside in lafayette famous as a memorial to the soldiers killed in the iraq and afghanistan wars will be the site of a peace vigil this sunday at the owner of the property says she wants to honor the people who are suffering so badly in ukraine and call for peace. tonight 2020 will feature a special episode called putin's war the battle to save ukraine angered by david muir on the border of ukraine in poland. you can watch it here on abc 7

has learned the name of a 14 year old boy killed in oakland wednesday night the family of shamari martin jr. shared these photos of that teenager shortly after reports of a shooting police. say a car flagged down an ambulance on mountain boulevard investigators. say someone pulled martin out of that car left him on the street near the ambulance and then drove away investigators. asking anyone with information about what happened to please come forward in san francisco family members and friends gathered this morning to remember longtime financier. richard blum blum was the husband of california senator dianne feinstein. he died last week at their san francisco after a battle with cancer feinstein attended today's memorial along with some of the couples political colleagues like former san

francisco mayor willie brown blum was 86 years old. glide foundation of san francisco is moving forward with plans to upgrade its aging buildings. glide has been headquartered at 3:30 ellis street since 1929 officials say the building has seen minimal renovations or improvements during that time and is in critical need of organization as you can imagine the plan calls for a new building at the current location with an expansion into an adjacent lot parts of glide memorial church would also be renovated in this process the initial cost estimate for the project is between 150 and 200 million dollars a wine tasting room in sonoma county caught fire causing extensive damage to the building. now the video you're seeing here is from the sonoma county sheriff happened at the larson family winery wednesday evening. the owner said in a statement they are devastated by the los. or business and irreplaceable family memorabilia. no other buildings were damaged and no one was hurt the tasting room was once a barn and home to the sonoma rodeo.

the fire cause is under investigation. the winery will closed until further notice. well, the chp says three people and a baby are truly fortunate to have survived a multi-vehicle crash in sonoma county. the chp says a subaru subaru with an 18 month old inside. slammed into the back of another car on river road in the town of fulton the subaru then spun into oncoming traffic hitting a county transit bus the bus slid down to 20 foot embankment and ended up on its side the subaru sustained of course major damage a passerby came and helped the baby. as soon as he got to the and seat with its rear facing child seat and as you can tell that was contributing factor to that child is still alive. the chp says the baby and three adults were taken to the hospital with moderate injuries.

this morning a demolition crew successfully blasted a massive boulder that came crashing down at echo summit around six last night as we reported blocking the highway look at the size of this thing caltrans says the boulder was about the size of a semi truck crews were able to clean up the remaining debris and get the road back open about 2:30 this afternoon. in new york city, ♪ ♪ there's always something new to discover. ♪ ♪
