in other countries. jobina: a cease-fire was called to temporarily open core for civilian evacuation. russia previously violated its own pledge for cease-fire in the previous days. the ukrainian president says russia's latest plan to use high precision weapons to destroy middle -- military facilities. russia is deliberately targeting ukrainian civilians. it comes as "the wall street journal" reports russian is recruiting syrians, hoping that there urban combat skills can help take the capital city. >> most of them are very tired, terrified, because they don't know what to expect. jobina: in less than a week, the u.s. and nato have increased efforts to help ukraine. more than 17,000 antitank weapons have crossed the border into kyiv and other major

cities. secretary of state says there are discussions about banning russian oil, though no decision has been made yet. kumasi: a couple in kyiv got married in their military uniforms. they have been together for 24 years and they say they never felt the need to get married until now. they exchanged rings in foreign of fellow fighters and a military chaplain. they want to defend their country together. reggie: as war rages on ukraine, a bay area priest is on a mission to help his homeland. our reporter found out what is taking him to the front lines of the military effort. reporter: the battle against russian forces intensifying, and the humanitarian crisis deepening. >> people left their homes and they don't have stuff with them, only the stuff they could take. reporter: just days ago, the father was working on his doctoral degree at santa clara university. now in poland, organizing aid

reporter: tara campbell, abc 7 news. kumasi: a group of bay area positions came together in concert for support of ukraine. ♪ kumasi: took the stage at campbell's starlight theater and they played several songs ukraine's most famous rock bands. all the performers are natives of ukraine, russia, or belarus. one spoke about the impact it is having on his homeland. >> many families affected. friends of mine are fleeing. is terrible over there. that is one of the reasons we want to at least provide some help from here. kumasi: the proceeds will go to a nonprofit in palo alto. it is providing humanitarian aid into -- and emergency supplies to refugees, as well as ukrainian citizens who are still in the war zone. if you would like to help the

people of ukraine, we have a full list of verified groups and nonprofits sending donations and supplies to refugees. that is on our website abc7news.com. get ready to pay more for gas in california then you likely have ever before. gas prices in the state are at another record high, with the price of regular unleaded gas jumping six cents overnight. aaa says the price is gallon on average. our reporter is joining us live. reporter: as you mentioned, the gas prices keep going up. according to aaa, they are up here in california six cents just from yesterday. if you take a look at this east bay gas station, a gallon of regular here is $5.05 per gallon. check out this footage of long lines at the cosco in south san francisco. prices here at $.60 a gallon lower than a station couple miles down the road. the war in ukraine is fueling

the surging gas prices. the u.s. appears to be closer to banning russian oil imports. drivers are feeling the impact of these rising gas prices. napa, marin, marin, marin are the most expensive counties for gas here in the bay area, while solano, contra costa, and santa clara are the cheapest. that is according to aaa. i care live in the east bay, $5.05 per gallon. it is actually lower than the average in the golden state. aaa says today, the average price is five dollars 34 cents per gallon. it is a good idea to shop around for the lowest gas prices. kumasi: thank you. some jurors in tempo disco will start to get paid today. they are launching a pay $100 to jurors.

and he has spoken within vigils at the game. kumasi: in efforts by some residents to limit the number of students enrolled at uc berkeley, i judge recently ruled in the favor, forcing them to accept 3000 fewer students next year than planned. now, the group says they would agree to 1000 additional students, with conditions, including a guarantee 90% of those students are california residents. a uc berkeley spokesperson said elected world -- elected officials make the decision, not a small group of litigants. they're asking for some prospective students to billion till next year. more libraries in san mateo county are now open on sundays. most were closed on sundays during the pandemic, including branches in belmont, east palo alto, and half moon bay. the libraries have also increased hours. reggie: disneyland paris celebrating its 30th anniversary

still encouraging people to mask up when inside public spaces, regardless of vaccination status. kumasi: as we enter the third year of this pandemic come up more than 6 million people have died from covid-19. this comes as families can order more recover test starting this week. jobina has more on what health experts are saying about cases here in the bay area. jobina: cova cases and hospitalizations have dropped since the peak of omicron more than a month ago. according to "chronicle" health experts say it will be another four to six weeks before the numbers bottom out. it peaked in mid january, when more than 18,000 cases per day were reported in the bay area. now, we are seeing about 30 to 35 cases per day. experts say it is not too soon -- they say it is too soon to know whether it will start going up. the cdc director tells the u.s. that we are not quite in an endemic phase yet, but we can get there soon. she also says we should be prepared for possible surges during respiratory virus season,

kumasi: a missing university of san francisco student has been found dead. the 21-year-old was reported missing a week ago. in a since deleted instagram post, his brother said he went on an impulsive road trip from san francisco to irvine. fresno county sheriffs's office has now confirmed his body was found in a rented tesla model three, overturned in a ditch along southbound interstate five. chp is still investigating the crash. so far, they have only said it happened sometime between monday and saturday. reggie: police are reminding

people about the danger of fireworks after two kids were hurt. they were playing with ariel fireworks .1 expletive. a tendril boy suffered injuries to both hands, his chest, and face. he was airlifted to ucf children's hospital in oakland. a teenage girl also suffered head injuries. >> fireworks aren't suffering -- aren't something to take nightly. give to take them seriously because of situations like this. reggie: they're looking at debris at the scene. they are looking into how the kids got a hold of the fireworks. kumasi: this video shows a dramatic rescue in marin county. the fire department asked a sonoma county sheriff's office to bring in a helicopter to reach an elderly person who barely fell from a trail, then went down 150 feet down a steep ravine. the chopper came in, lifted the person to safety and flew them to hospital nearby. sonoma was called in because it is the only one in the county in the region that is capable of deploying a 200 foot long line. reggie: authorities are revealing more in the case of the writing mom faking her own
