dan: tonight, the verdicte v landmark case in san francisco, a police officer acquitted in the use of force case. a jury finding terrence stangl not guilty on three counts and hung on a fourth. it is believed this is the first trial in san francisco history after -- on an officer for f allegedly using excessive force. ama: j.r. stone has reaction from outside court today. reporter: this is san francisco police officer tariffs -- terrence stangl minutes before a jury found him not guilty on three of four felony charges for excessive force. >> in my opinion, a garbage case. when you got a d.a. tipping the skills of justice for political reasons, everyone should be concerned. reporter: she represents stangl who could still face a fourth charge of assault under color of authority if the district

attorney's office chooses to refile. the jury was deadlocked on that but leaned 9-3 in favor of not guilty. >> their inability to reach a verdict as one cap shows there were issues of great concern and debate. reporter: as bodycam video from this night in 2019 when he and his partner responded to eight domestic violence call. when officers arrived, he was seen standing near his girlfriend. officers ordered him against the wall. shortly after, single hit suspect several times with his baton. he was never arrested in the case and the city and kind of sf -- of san francisco settled in a separate lawsuit for $7,000. >> we give these men and women a baton and tell them they can use it to protect themselves against assaulted people.

-- assaultive people. reporter: activists believe excessive force was used and are upset there were no black jurors. they say the not guilty verdicts are not a total loss here. >> as long as her district attorney keeps the faith and continues to keep the pressure on. officers will hesitate in being abusive. knowing they could possibly also go to trial. reporter: the district attorney says his office will continue to fight to make sure all communities are safe. stangl's lawyer now questioning how this case even made it in front of a judge. >> it feels great to have officer stangl vindicated in this way. i would like to say we shouldn't be surprised when a police officer goes and does exactly what he has been trying to do. reporter: i was told that the da was not available for an interview. the das office has not said if

that fourth charge will be refiled. the office will only say they will be back in court at 9:00 tuesday. stangl's lawyer did not comment on what is next for her client. dan: today, san francisco statea senator introduced registers -- regulation. the legislation comes after the san francisco da's office accuse the police department of using dna collected from right victims to investigate other crimes. this bill would make that practice illegal and prohibit victims dna from being placed in any searchable database. san francisco police chief says he fully supports this proposal. santa clara counties district attorney reassured victims it has never misused their dna. >> we want to protect victims of sexual assault, not collect evidence from them they can be used against them later. we haven't and will never do

that. dan: tomorrow the santa clara county board of supervisors will ask for an extensive report on its crime lab's policies regarding survivors dna samples. ama: for the third time in five days, a driver has hit a pedestrian in san jose. today's crash happened at capital expressway and story road. the pedestrian is hospitalized but stable. officers don't know yet whether that person was in a marked crosswalk. the driver stayed on scene and is cooperating. the two other pedestrians hit in the past week survive. one of the as is -- incidence was a hit-and-run. dan: helping news, ukrainian officials are claiming to russian planes shot down over capital. russia says a temporary cease-fire will begin tomorrow morning. this comes following a third round of talks between the countries that did not produce may result. officials say more than 400 civilians have been killed in the fighting, though that number

is likely higher than that. the ukrainian president gave an exclusive interview today with abc's david mirror. -- david muir. he had a powerful message. >> speak about freedom. they know what this is. now, when we are looking at ukrainians, i think you feel what that feels for us. we are not far from you. that is why americans, if you see any of -- how we fight against enemies for our freedoms, support us. not only with words, with direct steps, duties.

northwestern included 64 patients, some who had been hospitalized. others who later experienced long-haul symptoms. findings show evidence of damage in the brain. >> even patients were asymptomatic or have mild infections can still develop neurological symptoms. reporter: she explains how this damage could be happening. >> we know that there are blood leaks in the brain reporter: reporter: and inflammation. one of those reporter: was recorded by the northwestern team. samantha lewis, 34-year-old who is active before getting covid in 2020, now she struggles with memory loss. a second study at the the the tt of oxford included 400 people who tested positive for covid-19

between 51 and 81 years old. their team compared m.r.i. scan's from before and after covid and found the brain shrinking in size after infection. >> usually has cognitive consequences. how we form the connections is how we remember. reporter: a professor of neurology at ucsf believes more data is necessary to determine what is causing damage to the brain. and to find ways to heal. >> the people who had m.r.i.'s who did not have covid must've had some other problem with their nervous system that was being looked into. so it may have underestimated the problem with covid. dan: as i'm sure you've noticed, gas prices are high and will likely be getting higher in the

him to get gas. reporter: anna maria exclusively takes public transit. she says it is convenient to either take the bus or bart. recently she has enjoyed how empty it has been. >> i like there is nobody on bart. it is easy to go in and come out. and also catch a bus. reporter: but bart wants to change that. they say ridership is still at 30% of what was before the pandemic. with covid cases going down gas prices going up, they hope it leads to more people writing bart. >> gas prices are through the roof. the bridge toll recently went up as well. driving has never been more expensive. reporter: over the last couple of years more and more people have preferred hitting the road than boarding a train. what with these gas prices going up significantly high, travel experts think more people could return to public transit. >> if it is sustained for a period of time, then i think you see people looking for alternatives. reporter: john goodman says
