moving forward finding solutions. this is abc 7 news. of fiery crash on the peninsula after a caltrained slams into several vehicles entering more than a dozen people tonight. one person is in the hospital but officials say they are thankful that this collision was not worse. good evening. thank you for joining us. i'm dan ashley and i'm on a date. so you're watching abc 7 news at five. so here's the area that we're talking about right off of 101 in san bruno the train came to rest here on the tracks parallel to huntington avenue. and san felipe just south of the san bruno station and we have abc 17 coverage with you for you tonight. you can see sky 7 is live above the scene right now abc 7 news reporter tara campbell spoke to people who were the train when the crash happened and tim johns is monitoring the impact. this is having on the evening caltrain commute. all of that's coming, but let's
5:01 pm
begin with abc 7 news reporter carina nova live in the newsroom with the very latest from investigators on this karina. well 13 people were hurt today in that caltrain crash one equipment operator was taken to the hospital with serious burns a caltrain engineer and three passengers were also taken to the hospital. we're told no one has threatening injuries in sky 7 flew over that scene where the train ended up and you're huntington and san felipe avenue. that's just past the san bruno train station officials. say crews were in that area working on an electrification project and the train hit at least two separate vehicles on the track. we're told there may be a third vehicle under the train but investigator investigations are underway right now into that sky seven video shows two overturned and burn vehicles one is a crane truck. there were about 75 passengers on board the train when this happened and smoke started to fill the cabin the san bruno fire chief credited the
5:02 pm
conductor and others in the area for helping get people out safely. the train conductor was able to work to evacuate the train and that was critical in the success to make sure no one lost their life today really an important thing the incident occurred directly across the street from our public works yard here in the of san bruno and our public works folks actually were out there assisting evacuating the train as well, but prior to first responders even arriving on scene. right now, it's unclear how fast the train was going and why that equipment was not cleared from the tracks. there is an investigation that will be done by. ntsb san bruno fire and trained police to determine that the train will be in place during the investigation and that means trained service will be impacted for quite a while. you'll want to check with caltrain for any of those updates live in the newsroom. i'm karina, nova. okay, karina. thanks a lot abc 7 news reporter tara campbell was on her way to a different story actually when this fire broke out she saw the
5:03 pm
accident from the freeway and was the first reporter on the scene. she joins us live now with what witnesses and passengers say about this crash terror dan, as you were just saying there we were able to quickly turn around and get to the scene earlier this morning and what we saw were people visibly shaken by what they had just experienced several of those passengers had already been had already fled the scene of the fire and take a listen to what they had to say to us earlier. a caltrained car bursting into flames passen rambling to get out. i look to my right when the train finally came to stop and i just saw flames. i just started running towards the front alex mendoza running for his life doing whatever he could to escape the fiery wreckage. someone opened up a window and i just jumped out a window taking a leap and hoping for safe landing and i knew i was jumping on but i didn't know like how high or anything.
5:04 pm
i just needed to get out of there and the same goes for these passengers all escaping and visibly shaken. the impact was so so big that i wasn't too sure what it hit. so again as the train moved a little bit more it impacted again elizabeth tom describing the terrifying moments trapped smoke rising next thing i know. is getting up from the seat because we saw smoke coming from under the tracks all on board moving quickly trying to get the doors open and we weren't too sure how it's gonna work. so one lady broke the latch and broke the glass and pulled the latch and the doors open and we quickly got off at the track and as soon as we turn around we saw under the tracks another passenger sending us this video taken moments after escaping the inferno passengers who had gotten off the train. came up to our car and started. like hitting the windows and they were saying that the train was on fire fleeing to safety these passengers relieved from this major accident only minor
5:05 pm
injuries medics and law enforcement all on scene. finding out water making sure passengers were okay as they awaited a shuttle. now as you can see, it it it it quieter scene here than earlier today. we've watched as fire crews have pulled out of here. this sheriff's are still here. they do have this. old blocked off denton on the tara this as you well, no, you're right there at the scene when it happened. it happened happened like six and a half. ago about 10:30 today. give us a sense of what's happening there right now. right. yeah, like i was saying it's it's certainly a much different story as you can see behind me. there's really not a lot of action about an hour ago. we could still see some fire back there some fire fire some of the fire department back there and it's unclear if we were watching them investigate cleaning up. it's we don't know at this time, but what is very clear is it's a much different story than it. as many hours ago certainly some
5:06 pm
terrifying moments for those people is as you heard. yeah sure was tara. thank you very much. well, even though the incident did happen as dan mentioned just after 10:30 this morning. there are still major delays tonight abc 7 news reporter. tim johns joins us live with more and how evening caltrain commuters in san francisco are coping tim. yeah, that's right. amma now, i'm here at the station at 4th and king street in san francisco. like you just said and commuters if they haven't heard about the chaos being caused already when they get here. they certainly will caltrain officials at the station telling me they are currently expecting. ways of about an hour give or take a few minutes now what that means for folks who are starting their journey from this station and looking ahead down south is that they're gonna have to get the train from here to to south san francisco from there. they're going to to gain a bus service and go to the millbury station where they will then connect with a seperate train and then continue their journey down south now, of course for folks who are looking to commute north it is just the reverse now
5:07 pm
some of the commuters we spoke with upon coming here and hearing that's the route they're going to have to take said they just think it's too much of an inconvenience. we spoke to one gentleman was trying to get down to san mateo this afternoon and said that he was just going to go back home. forgo his meeting in san mateo, but once you guys have a listen to some of what he had to say. i'm just going back home because it doesn't make sense. i wouldn't get there until. long after that i need to be there. it is frustrating. which means i'm not gonna get paid. now but other commuters saying they're actually impressed with the way that caltrain has handled the situation understanding that, you know, it's just a lot of chaos things happening very fast. we spoke to one. man, and this is some of what he had to say. they've been okay because they posted everywhere twitter instagram the crew here explaining it correctly too. it's fine. at least i'm happy that they have a bus bridge for us. that's very nice of them. i think that's cool.
5:08 pm
now of course course course coue continuing to unfold we're just about to get into the peak of rush hour as well. so if you guys are looking to head to caltrain, maybe check out their social media accounts or sign up for their emails to get the very latest information. and of course we here at abc 7 will also provide you with the very latest as it becomes available. i'm live in san francisco tim johns abc 7 news. right tim. thank you. and we use the abc 7 news app to send out this push alert when skies 7 was over the couching crash so you could see what was happening live. just download the abc 7 bay area app for your phone. so you'll be the first to know when news happens. alright moving on now there seems to be no relief in sight fr pain at the pump the average price of a gallon of gas in california is now 569. that's up 12 cents from just yesterday prices are even higher in the bay area. marin has the highest price. lee at 591 a gallon san francisco not far behind of course at 586 in oakland. it's 578 and it's san jose.
5:09 pm
it's 574 a gallon to fill up and while most of us are trying to find the lowest price as abc 7 news reporter zach fuentes explains a cheaper price may not always actually be the best deal. as gas prices stay high seems like this continue to stay the norm locally drivers heading to places like costco where fuel prices are lower than other name brands some still choose to go with the more expensive brands and two chevron because i think the gas is a lot better research done by triple a confirms that in some cases cheaper prices. don't always benefit your car in the long run. unfortunately, our data also shows that americans value convenience and price over quality because our research shows that non-top to you gasoline. alternate about up to 19 times more engine deposits than top-tier gasoline if you can minimize those engine deposits your car may. thank you later on they can increase their vehicle performance and they can prove their fuel economy. luckily for all of these drivers costco gas along with others like chevron and shell falls under the top tier program.
5:10 pm
that's a program between manufacturers and gasoline producers to make us a specific type of gasoline. that manufacturers say runs best in the vehicle still petroleum. as patrick dehon says gas under that top-tier program isn't necessarily something. he seeks out. he says that at a base level gasoline has to meet federal standards and it feel like i said may have different additives and detergents that go above and beyond federal standards, but all of that gasoline is generally coming from the same refineries. so for now, what is the gas price outlook to han says that we've had a two-day drop in the price of oil that fingers cross will benefit our wallets that may bring some relief now, i'm not sure, you know if it'll be by this weekend i could happen soon. that price is stabilized. may even inch back down a little bit zach fuentes abc 7 news. after the break a 70 year old woman is speaking out about the terrifying attack outside her senior home in oakland what she
