tens of thousands without power in the south as snow causes slick streets and accidents. tornados, heavy snow, rain, and damaging winds. >> 75 million people in that storm's path. rob is tracking it for us. good morning to you, rob. >> good morning, eva. this is an expansive storm and it's intensifying further. it will rapidly intensify in the next 12 to 20 hours. this thing up and down the east coast. it already did damage as far as the snow is concerned across the central u.s. now we have tornado watches up for parts of florida and just added now the carolinas. look at the winter storm warnings all the way down into the deep south. let's look at the threat for violent storms, goes all the way into central florida, but as we go through the afternoon, that watch up until 1:00 for charleston, wilmington, raleigh, could see straight-line wind damage. tracking the storm, we have heavy rain that will turn visual to snow. this is what it did in lexington, 4.5 inches there,

memphis with 3 inches. tennessee getting clobbered with the snow, and western pennsylvania as well. but the rainfall will be heavy at times, quickly turning over to snow, already starting to do that in places like washington, d.c. it will quickly end from west to east, but it will quickly turn colder and enough to stick at least to grassy surfaces. well inland, we'll see 6 to 12 inches of snow and everybody getting into the deep freeze as far as the big chill is concerned. it will feel cold across the eastern two-thirds of the country through tomorrow. guys, back over to you. >> we know you'll stay on top of it, rob, thanks. in ukraine, russian attacks on cities are intensifying as forces edge closer to kyiv. abc's maggie rulli is back on the ground in lviv with the latest. maggie, good morning. >> reporter: hey, whit. good morning. we keep hearing reports of bombings and shellings happening overnight in cities across the country, but now this morning there's news that president putin has been meeting with both france and germany's trying hard kind of compromise.

but for so many ukrainians, the thousands that show up every day at this train station, these talks can just feel like they're happening too late. calling russia's widening attacks on key ukrainian cities an armageddon. in the south in mariupol, the mayor is saying his city is being shelled every 30 minutes, claiming thousands have now been killed. in the capital of kyiv, new satellite images showing russian military units cloe closing in, close to nine miles of the city center. center, and firing artillery towards residential areas. heavy fighting in the east leaving this town in ruin. family trapped in their basement for more than ten days as buildings fell around them. >> we have been bombed in a rocket attack. we have damages in the private sector, the civilian sector, damages in electricity, heat, and gas. >> reporter: kim, speaking to the people of the city almost hourly, letting them know what's

happening on the ground in real time. he tells us he fears for his family. local officials are increasingly becoming targets. ukrainian officials claiming this video showing the kidnapping of melitopol's mayor by armed troops. president zelenskyy praising the mayor as one who bravely defended ukraine and the members of his community. new fears of false flags. russia doubling down about fake claims about chemical weapons being developed by ukraine, believed to justify russia's own use in warfare. an official telling us the russians are bringing hazmat suits into ukraine. >> russia has a track record of falsely accusing other countries of the very violations russia itself is perpetrating. >> reporter: president biden declining to say if a russian chemical attack in ukraine would be met with a u.s. military response. >> i'm not going to speak about the intelligence, but russia would pay a severe price if they used chemicals.

>> reporter: despite these escalating dangers, kim like so many ukrainians, tells us he can't leave the city. these are his people and his land. how confident are you that you and your town and ukrainian troops can really fight russia right now? >> we have no choice. we have to fight and defend our land, and i'm truly sure that we will win this war. >> reporter: you saw horrific images out of mariupol. i do want to leave you with a bit of good news from the region. you remember this now iconic photo. that woman is mariana, nine months pregnant, escaping a maternity ward after a bombing there, but now we can report that she has given birth. she has a healthy baby girl. you can see the whole family there together. she named the daughter veronica. >> you can't imagine being in labor and then having to escape the hospital to then give birth. so happy for her and her family and their new little one.

maggie rulli, thank you. there are 2.5 million refugees that have been forced to leave ukraine. a harvard freshman was deeply moved by their stories and was determined to do something about it. he enlisted fellow freshman marco bernstein, and together they created ukraine take shelter. it's a website that connects refugees with people who can offer them a place to stay, everything from vacation homes to a spare room to a couch. the guys got the site up and running in just three days. it's in 12 languages. and in this first week, more than 4,000 people around the world, including here in the u.s., have offered shelter to these refugees. abi told us how quickly it has taken off. >> last night before i went to sleep, there were all these listings in hungary, woke up this morning, there's like no listings in hungary, they've all been filled. it's incredible to see. >> the guys are thankful to the people around the world who have helped them get started and to

i'm got some all purpose flour. we're going to add in some baking powder. we've got some light brown sugar as well. and then we have some toasted and chopped walnuts, a bit of texture. we're going to add those in. the best part are the spices. i've got here lots of cinnamon, so we're going to add in our cinnamon and also nutmeg. i think my top tip is do not skimp on your spices. you want the flavor and you want them to balance out with the ginger we add in. that's the dry ingredients. we're just going to give that a nice mix. and then we're going to go on to our wet mixture. so for our wet mixture, we've basically got here some raisins, and oranges. to this we add in the star of the show, which are ginger beer. so we're using ginger beer instead of milk, and it's going to create a really frothy tex dhur a texture. we're also going to add in some orange zest for a bit more

flavor, a touch of maple syrup for a bit of extra sweetness, and finally you want to bind everything together. we crack in our egg. that goes in. then one more whisk. >> this is a ginger beer that helps with the fluffiness? >> yes. the ginger beer because it's got all those bubbles in it. so unlike a regular pancake with milk, the bubbles in the gingerbread really lift up the pancake. and also you get that lovely fiery ginger flavor, which is fantastic. i've got my wet ingredients here. what i'm going to do is create a well in the center of my dry ingredients and then slowly whisk in all my lovely wet ingredients. i've got the ginger beer or the orange zest, the raisins. and then we're going to give this a nice mix, just until it's all well combined. and then ideally, you want to leave your pancake batter to rest for at least 30 minutes because that's going to give you a lovely fluffy pancake. while that's resting, you can make your cream cheese frosting

because obviously pancakes are not complete without cream cheese frosting. i've made a cream cheese frosting here. and that is basically is icing, sugar, cream cheese, butter, honey, vanilla and a binch of salt. so i'll give this a nice mix. that's lovely and smooth. that literally takes a few minutes to put together. >> all about presentation. >> yes. it's all about presentation. so once your batter has rested, you want to put in your carrots -- >> forgive us. we are out of time. but we are loving the pancakes. >> sure. i'll let you go.
