waking up that smell of rain out there. we have a little bit in the north bay as we look at the cloud cover pushing through the bay area. it is mild with 54? san bruno. fog along the coast. 53 redwood city as well as napa, fairfield, and livermore. a warm start. we'll look for 60s to return today the fog is getting better it was at a mile along the coast and as we look outside here you'll see a few clouds floating by. we'll call it partly sunny throughout the first half of the day and temperatures climbing through the 50s but by 2:00, 3:00 in the afternoon partly cloudy, numbers will be a little bit above average and we'll talk about spring-like week with a mix of some rain warmer weather and a little more rain all ahead in a few minutes. >> we begin this morning with the latest developments on the war in ukraine. a senior adviser to

said talks could take place this week. russia is expanding its efforts into western ukraine. 35 people were killed by russian air strikes at a military training facility near the polish border. 134 others were also injured and taken to the hospital. ukrainian i sass russian war planes fired 30 missiles. eight hit the military base near the polish border where american forces were recently training the ukrainian army as part of a nato mission. >> as russian forces continue their invasion, more people are leaving ukraine. the country's prime minister says about 13,000 people were evacuated saturday, more than 2.5 million since the war began. a defiant president zellsski warning the russians they'll have to carpet bomb kyiv and kill all of its residents, if that is their goal let them come. ukrainians unwavering this their resolve. >> we will fight from every

asked to contact the sheriff's office. the investigation into thursday's cal train crash in san bruno continues. crews and the nmp tsb are on site collecting evidence. federal investigators turned the scene back over to cal train. cal train is running on a normal weekend schedule with a bus bridge. passengers who left belongings on the train involved in the crash can pick up their items this weekend at the 4th and king station in san francisco. now to our efforts to build a better bay area. there is a call to help get women experiencing homelessness off the streets and into safe shelter a san francisco nonprofit is pushing for more traditional and permanent housing. >> kay la's on the verge of living on the streets. she's been there before and doesn't want to go back. >> i don't want to be on the

street and in a tent. that's my worst fear is being on the street. >> she's getting some emergency support at community forward san francisco but crmp oo sammy rainer says it's not enough. >> i'm not being dramatic when i say women on the streets will die. >> explaining on average women living on the streets die in their late 40's and that more women only shelter and housing options are a must. >> there's about 2700 women who experience homelessness in a given year in our city. and there's only 99 shelter beds. and there's only 157 housing units that are gender specific. so we really have a problem. >> those working closely with these women say oftentimes they're choosing to li on the streets over goig to shelters where they don't feel safe. >> because the vast majority of women facing homelessness are

also experiencing trauma. >> if you walk down the street and you see a woman, 90% chance she will have experienced violence or abuse in her lifetime. and that's probably 100% if we're being real. >> and that's why the nonprofit is embarking on a mission petitions support to buy a 10 unit building just for women. >> so this would be a safe space where unhoused women can come to access drop-in day services shelter and permanent support of housing. >> what would be most helpful about having a place to stay where there's only women? >> it would be helpful because i would be able to just be myself. >> providing stability for women like kay la working to build a better life. >> it would be motivational, it

>> new york's museum of modern art is closed today after two were stabbed. he had recently lost his membership because of disorderly conduct. he became angry when he was denied entry and he jumped over the reception desk. two employees were stabbed several times. they were taken to the hospital. thankfully they're expected to be ok. tomorrow will be volunteering for students teachers and facktiss to wear masks but the state is allowing counties, districts, and individual schools to keep mask mandates

in place if they choose to. oakland is one district that will still require masks at least for the next two weeks. san francisco unified has made them optional. the dancing grannies were back at it in milwaukee's st. patrick's day parade the first time they have performed since four of their members died in the waukesha christmas day attack four months ago. the grannies were met by smiles, signs, and cheering crowd. since december the surviving grannies have brought on 20 new two of the irish routines were choreographed by one of their fallen members. before they met for a special toast. the grannies are in high demand. their next performance is a week away. the first major event to be canceled due to covid returned to san francisco nearly two years to the day since the city shut down. the festivities took on new

1300 flights were canceled yesterday. the storm is expected to last through the end of the weekend. so much different picture here. we are just dealing with a little bit of rain this morning. >> very little. in fact drop that storm impact scale. but bringing it back in less than about 24 hours or so because we have another system that will bring more widespread rain late tomorrow night into tuesday. not a biggie kind of a run of the mill march storm. but then it looks like next weekend things are coming together for a little more rain. so you can see the pacific it is active, that shape out in the pacific. unfortunately the systems are heading well up into alaska. you can see portland, seattle, now 37 degrees in lake tahoe airport. it is raining there. we have a little bit of snow in the northern mountains of the state well to the north by

mount shasta, otherwise it is about the mild temperatures. southwest winds really trapping the warmth from yesterday and not rea leasing it. so we stayed warm all night long 52 in the city. we have a little fog along the coast but overall temperatures are feeling pretty mild. you may want to open the windows a little bit. as we look out towards the golden gate. don't see any wet pavement. it was there, we did have some rain and it's other with, anywhere from a couple hundredths of a quarter of an inch. so as the drizzle ends we'll get into partly cloudy skies, clouding up on monday. more rain late monday into tuesday then we're dry throughout the rest of the week. rain returns this time next week. so on saturday we should be getting more wet weather. a couple hunters out there notice the totals continue to add up. but the rain is pretty much history as we look at the rest of the day today you'll notice that the clouds decrease.

this is 11:30 and we'll get into partly cloudy skies. this is 6:00 the clouds increase for your monday. cloudy, dry, until late in the day. this is 11:00 at night monday where the rain is offshore but look how much there is. it looks impressive compared to what we've seen the past few months which is nothing. this continues to press into sonoma, napa, the north bay and 7:30 pushing over san francisco, the peninsula, maybe a few showers in the eastbound. once again favoring the north bay but still we'll look for rainfall amounts to be trace amounts from the eastbound probably nothing in the south bay but as you get up towards the north bay the coastal hills, maybe a tenth to two tenths. as we look at the late week forecast we're dry and sunny. this is saturday the 19th where we're looking at a warm system to start out and then colder air behind it. so we'll hope for that. 63 looks to be the common number for highs today with

shootings. he said he was hopeless and suicidal because of a sex addiction. a day of silence is planned on wednesday to respect and honor the victims. authorities are looking for a man suspected of murdering an eight-year-old girl from hayward. the girl's mother is in jail. she was first arrested on a separate child abuse charge. police say that they have also charged her in connection with the death of her daughter sophia mason. they're looking for this person this man dante jackson of mers ed who they say is johnson's boyfriend. sophia has not been seen since december. a child thought recently identified in jackson home. police say they made an arrest in the shooting death of a convenience store owner. investigators released this video of someone running from rose market after singh was robbed and killed. the suspect was also wanted for other rob riss. he came to the u.s. to provide

for his family until they joined him a couple years later. he leaves behind a wife and two sons. those who knew him say he was hard working, compassionate and faithful. a miracle baby beat the odds. she is now six months old but was born at just 23 weeks. yesterday the hospital celebrated her progress virtually with her parents and the staff who looked after her. >> she was feisty from the beginning. she was crying when we got her to the resuscitation bed and we did have to int bait her put a breathing tube in to help her and she just really fought from the beginning. >> not only were her parents fighting for their daughter's life. her father got covid just after her birth. now she is almost 11 pounds. and thriving.

tuesday, this is right on through tuesday night. but it looks like a quarter of an inch for a third. hopefully get a trace amount down through mountain view and the south bay but we'll see as we look towards the middle of the week high pressure builds in but then on saturday look what happens. we've got a warm system spreading raid and then snow in the mountains right now it looks like a level 1 and we'll watch it for you. 60 today in san francisco. look for 58 along the shore lipe. the winds are going to pick up along the coast so it will be breezy. that's why we have the 50s. mid 60s in san jose. temperatures around average today. in the south bay waiting on the sun through waking up to the cloud cover, the muggy conditions. and the seven-day forecast looking at that rain arriving late tomorrow, level one system into early tuesday and then wednesday, thursday, friday, we've got sunny skies inland around 70 bayside upper 60s at the coast, about 60.
