>> building a better bay area, moving forward, finding solutions, this is abc 7 news. go there, to visit ukraine, eat the food, experienced the culture in ukrainian hospitality. liz: a san francisco-based chef joining the global movement as the work continues on, she is cooking to raise money for ukraine. good morning, it is sunday, march 13. i am liz kreutz, think you for joining us. let's get a look at the weather with lisa argen, we are entering the final week of winter. lisa: spring arrives next sunday, we have springtime showers for the week ahead. right now, watching a very weak system fall apart as it pushes through california. there is a look at 280 with the cloud cover, look at the 50's. but to mid 50's, it has been muggy all night long.

another cloudy view, 40 seven santa rosa, 55 in concord. we are so much warmer, southwinds yesterday and today. for miles along the coast of visibility, we have lived to mid-60's to look forward to with afternoon sunshine. it will take a while for the clouds to thin out, we enjoy a partly cloudy day and we will be tracking another level 1 system for late tomorrow coming up. liz: we do begin this morning with the latest developments on the war in ukraine. an american journalist has reportedly died after being stopped at a checkpoint in a town outside of kyiv. in a statement on twitter, the new york times says they are deeply saddened by his death. he was a talented filmmaker who contributed to the new york times over the years. the times says he was not on an assignment for any desk at the time in ukraine while he was there. we will keep you posted on developments. meanwhile, the white house is promising another $200 million

worth of weapons for ukraine. this morning, russia is expanding its offensive into western ukraine. 85 people were killed by russian airstrikes at a military training facility near the polish border. abc news reporter has the latest. reporter: this morning, russia expanding their offensive and western ukraine. ukrainian's essay russian warplanes fired 30 missiles, 22 intercepted, eight hitting the military base. american forces were recently trying the ukrainian army as part of a nato mission here, killing at least 35 people and wounding 134. the attack escalating tensions coming just one day after russia vowed to treat all armed shipments as legitimate targets for military action. overnight, and attack in southern ukraine destroying a critical airport in the region. with russia intensifying their attacks, president zelensky is insisting they would have to decimate kyiv to control it,

egging them on and a new video saying if that is their goal, let them come. nato countries are on high, president biden is firm on not sending u.s. troops into battle. >> the idea we will send in offensive equipment and have planes and tanks into trains going in with american pilots and american crews, just understand -- do not kid yourself, no matter what you say. that is called world war iii. reporter: instead announcing 200 million dollars in new military assistance ukraine. french president emmanuel macron and the german chancellor speaking by phone with president putin, calling for an immediate cease-fire. there is no sign of any pause in the fight. in the strategic stronghold, attacks on civilian areas are escalating. this man running for cover as bless hit a nearby playground. an operation to rescue 35 orphans by aerial recovery.

tim johns spoke with one san francisco-based ukrainian chef using her talents to support her country. reporter: 6200 miles away from her home, she watched the war unfold in her native ukraine in horror. her family and many friends still in the country, the san francisco-based chef decided she had to do something. so she joined cook for ukraine, a global movement of chefs bakers and others in the culinary world using food to raise money and show support for ukraine. >> we will donate all money, all proceeds to the world center, which is feeding our refugees. reporter: on sunday, she will host a sold-out fundraising dinner. her way of supporting her homeland. >> i do not want to be a cook in the united states who will preserve the culture. i want to develop the culture. i want people to be able to go there, visit ukraine, eat the food, experience the culture and

ukrainian hospitality. they are good to go, not too salty. perfect. reporter: the event will feature traditional ukrainian foods into supported by the san francisco cooking school. several members of which are also volunteering. >> when you watch the news and see what is going on, you want to contribute, help somehow. this was the easiest way for me to help. reporter: something she says has brought her comfort during a difficult time. >> i am smiling for the first time today because i saw these people, and they have their lives in something to do. reporter: she says sunday's event is just the beginning. she is planning on hosting more in the future. >> it will just grow and i hope i will contribute and help other people, not only ukraine. reporter: in san francisco, tim johns, abc 7 news. liz: a humanitarian relief concert raised money for refugees evacuating ukraine. ♪
