official says that russia has asked china for military assistance. a chinese spokesperson said he had not heard of that request. the national security advisor for white house is now set to meet with china's foreign policy advisor tomorrow. meanwhile an airstrike on a phyllis italy t -- on a facility in western ukraine today. >> the wars in ukraine moving dangerously closer to poland, raising concerns that nato could be drawn into the conflict. russian missiles struck a missile facility in a town 10 miles from poland. that facility previously used by the u.s. and nato to train ukrainian troops. >> if they strike in poland what happens? >> we take our commitment very seriously and in are meant -- and an armed attack against one means of an armed attack against all. >> president zelensky once again

into tuesday, we are expecting chances of light to moderate rain. a quarter of an inch or more in a bunch of the area. this is starting at 6:00 tomorrow evening and this waves surging into the north bay first. that will then spread into other parts of the bay area before it starts to wind down. there is not going to be drenching rain for the bay area. southeast bay expected to get anymore of 0.5 inches. on your complete accuweather's'r forecast in a few minutes. dion: abc 7 is committed to building a better bay area, and part of that includes bringing you stories about health as we emerge from the pandemic. we are matters of hours away from a school day that will look different for many kids in california. the mask mandate inspired -- expired on saturday, and kids

will have the option to wear their masks or take it off. j.r. stone has more. >> i kind of want to take my mask off because it is really hard to breathe in the masks and hard to keep them up. reporter: for the first time in a long time, this fourth-grader will be able to do just that at school on monday. california's mask mandate for students expired on the weekend and masks are instead strongly recommended inside classrooms. >> i have not gotten to see my friends full face. >> it should have happened a long time ago. reporter: not all districts are going with the state guidance and allowing masks to come off, though. oakland unified is keeping the mandate for all students and san francisco unified is allowing middle and high school students to go mask lists it's not younger elementary aged kids until april 2. >> they are at low risk, but the

risk is going to get even lower in the coming weeks if the models stay on track. reporter: but many other kids are hesitant. >> i think at school they should stay on, but after we do something like a workout we should take it off. or we should have mask breaks. reporter: we spur -- we -- we -w with this kindergarten teacher last year as hybrid classes finished. now another step forward with the option to go mask list. >> a majority of my kids will be wearing masks. a couple of my kids were never comfortable wearing them, but i don't now. i won't know until tomorrow. reporter: she admits this has been a tough decision on whether to mask or not. she says she has to look out for everyone, including her family at home. >> they want to see their teachers smile, they want to see an expression when i teach

letters, but i will be keeping that mask on for the rest of this year. that is what i have to do. when things are safer will -- because i do like to see people's faces, but i know i want to be safe. reporter: j.r. stone, abc7news. dion: now to new developments on nfl star tom brady. he announced on social media today that he is back. sports anchor chris alvarez joining us with more. you saw this coming. chris: yes, but i it today. today is selection day and for basketball, that is the day. tom brady announced that that ta return for his 23rd season and this is key for 49ers fans. he will return to tampa bay.

moment a man tried to stop a car at one of san francisco's most famous tourist sites. and this photo was taken today before the famous herbie park road begins. they see a man breaking into the back window of an suv. getaway car is there with the flashers on.

you watch as a man runs across the street, jumps onto the hood of that car trying to stop thieves did the man falls off the car, slamming his head on the pavement. sfpd tells me he was taken to the hospital but is not seriously hurt. police are looking for that car and the two men who got away. hillsboro police released surveillance video from this burglary near gina wei and butternut drive. take a look at several men coming out of the home with bags and load them into the car. suv's also stoned from the garage there. police say they think the suspects are possible -- responsible for other burglaries throughout the region and they think it is criminal tourism. the university of san francisco has fired its head baseball coach after reformer players filed a lawsuit. the players accused the coach

and associate head coach for creating an intolerable sexualized environment. usf fired nakamura january after an investigation. usf said the lawsuit along with g rotondo's recently allowing nakamura to be on the field before a game led them to take action. the university presidents of the safety and well-being of our students is usf's highest priority. we apologize to current and former students who have been affected. we have reopened our internal investigation. countering is temporarily reducing service for tomorrow's commute as a cleanup from a crash earlier this week continues. a train hit equipment on thursday. caltrans as one track can now be used at a speed of 15 miles an hour while work continues on the second track. because of that, trains will be single tracking through san

bruno and san francisco tomorrow. caltrain and the ntsb are still investigating thursday's crash which left 13 people hurt. crews were on-site all weekend collecting evidence. once again, spencer christian joining us with the weather and the timing. spencer: that is important, the timing and how much we will get once the time tooker starts. here's a look at what is happening right now. the calm before the light storm. we have calm winds around most of the bay right now. a bit breezy around san francisco did -- san francisco. the temperature change shows editors a few degrees cooler in most locations. here's the view from our rooftop camera, looking across the embark mitt area, partly cloudy skies. it is 47 at mountain view, san jose, santa clara and a fool for

-- a cool 48 at the bay. here is a look looking across the bay. 47 is the popular number right now. 46 and 51 at concord. a nice unobstructed view from the tower camera looking over the city. whatever clouds we have right now are not interfering with this view. the clouds will continue to be increasing overnight. north bay can expect the rain starting tomorrow afternoon and the rain continues to spread to other parts of the bay area into tuesday. you can expect sunnier and warmer days wednesday through friday. tonight's forecast looks like a steady stream of clouds. no rainfall expected during the day tomorrow but late in the afternoon, it will be expecting the north bay to have sprinkles approaching it. temperatures will drop into the mid to upper 30's and some of our inland valleys.

right around the bay shoreline, temperatures will drop into the low to mid 40's and on the coast , upper 30's to low 40's. south nice and mild. 72 in santa rosa -- into san jose, rather. we will see the highs rising into the upper 60's, up to 60 degrees on the coast. north bay highs mainly upper 60's. 68 in most locations and upper 60's on the east bay and the inland east bay. the approaching storm ranks a one on the impact scale, so for tomorrow night into tuesday, under 0.1 inches of rain expected for most locations. by midnight tomorrow we will see rain spreading and pushing southward and eastward and into tuesday morning, it becomes more widespread. at starts to taper off quickly by midday on tuesday. of rainfall totals will look like this.

the facility is just 10 miles from poland. >> if they strike in poland, what happens? >> we take our article five commitment seriously and an armed attack against one is considered an armed attack against all. dion: ukraine's president says there is daily discussion between ukraine and russia but he is still waiting to meet with vladimir putin. a u.s. citizen native to the bay area is speaking out after he is stuck at the ukrainian border. he is now helping refugees get across the border. >> when i looked outside, i a very bright shadow of light fly by. reporter: taras petro s t believes those were missiles.

>> the problem is that if it went a couple of miles west, then that would have been the beginning of world war iii. reporter: he is a translator from the midwest with family ties in the bay area. he found himself stuck in the country after unfortunate events. >> i got covid and i couldn't leave. i wanted to leave a couple of days right after the invasion started but i couldn't do that because of the flights were canceled. those streetlights in half an hour will turn off. reporter: petro says the lights than his village must go dark by 9:00 p.m. to avoid being a russian target. ukrainian tanks are constantly on the move through cities and towns. petro is also in transit hoping to shuttle refugees 12 miles to the polish border where lines and wait times are painfully long. >> at this point i'm going to

stay here to help as many people as possible to get to safety. reporter: taras petro says he is willing to forfeit his own safety to help. he knows that the toughest fight may be yet to come. >> ukrainians are very peaceful but they won't give up the fight. reporter: petro says he has been working to fight -- find housing for ukrainian refugees. for now he says he has no plans to return to the u.s.. dion: in the easttt organizations are coming together to help ukraine. the nonprofit white pony express provided us with this video. they collected medical supplies. more than 80 members of the group brought gloves, medicine, and more to the meeting at alameda today. the supplies will be shipped to ukraine this week. and a reminder that

crews were able to keep the flames from spreading to nearby buildings. no word on what caused that fire. as gas prices continue to soar, police are sending a warning americans to be on the lookout for gas thieves. in this video at a gas station in houston, thieves driving over to a fuel tank, allegedly stealing 12 gallons of gas. they used a trap door inside the vehicle in broad daylight. a texas mother says that people can't afford to drive their children's daycare so that she is losing business. >> nobody has to fill their tanks or billy's -- bellies. dion: california has the highest prices in the nation according to aaa. the average price is $ gallon. next week it is likely that the federal reserve will raise rates

the north bay are doing their part to build a better eight bay area. they have filled a hotline of inspiring messages reaching thousands around the world. reporter: it is the kindergartner art project that unexpectedly went viral. pep talk. right and colorful pictures with uplifting messages and a free hotline for positivity and pick me ups.
