close enough! ♪ ♪ better bay area moving forward finding solutions. this is abc 7 news. a man is dead tonight following a shooting in fremont. this is a live look at the scene right now this shooting allegedly taking place after an incident between two neighbors police have been out on the scene for hours now trying to piece together exactly. what happened. good evening. thank you for joining us. i'm dan ashley and i'm a dates. the shooting happened on lindenwood street abc 7 news reporter. tim johnson has more from neighbors on street and joins us live now from the newsroom with the latest tim. yeah, dan. i'm a police saying they responded to a call around 5:15 this evening in fremont now once they arrived on scene they say the discovered the body of a man with gunshot wounds fremont police tonight saying they believe they have the person responsible in custody investigators. it didn't elaborate on specific details, but neighbors spoke to us on scene now one man telling

abc 7 news that he had just driven home and pulled into his driveway when suddenly the victim ran up to his car and started banking. on his window and threatening him totally unprovoked that driver said he feared for his life and started quickly driving away calling 911 now after he drove off the victim then allegedly went back to the driveway where the driver's elderly stepfather was at that point. there was some type of confrontation with the victim allegedly and a shooting occurred the driver believes his stepfather fired himself defense. here's some of what he had to say can actually repeat i gonna kill you. i'm gonna bury you to look ground all that, you know. i don't even do nothing. i don't even know him. like i never met him before. now the victim's second cousin also spoke to abc 7 news this evening. he tells us that he believes his cousin was having some sort of psychotic episode over the past four days or so. he says he was never threatening to anyone, but would ramble on incoherently and then leave the house for watts? back and be seemingly fine. the man says they call police twice, but we're told that the

manages the convention center and a number of other arts and entertainment venues across the city says large conventions are quote on the books a search of a public events calendar shows silicon fanimecon, even the crunchyroll expo fan festival and more are for later this year. the hope is these events will bring back caterers clients. community and boost the local economy. it's the restaurants. it's the barber. it's the small shops. so frogs with signia also serves as board chair of team san jose. he says even with today's relaxed pandemic rules people ultimately have to be ready and there's a distinction between going out for dinner and meeting together with 10,000 people and i so i think it'll have various phases of coming back team, san jose says smaller events have already returned with hope business and convention travel is only ramping up the effect of it isn't immediately visible. it just takes time because they're convention. i mean some of them remember they used to be booked like multiple years out. so we need to start that process

merced and police now need help finding a second suspect abc 7 news reporter j r stone talked with the victim's cousin. this is eight-year-old sophia mason enjoying herself enjoying herself on a playground last june. likely one of the last videos showing the bubbly child as a remains were found at this merced home last friday more than anything. it makes me angry and upset and heartbroken all at the same time melanie. verlatti is sophia's second cousin who along with other family members. we're officially notified tuesday that the remains found here. we're sophia's. girl's mother samantha johnson seen in this booking photo is facing first degree murder charges, but has yet to enter a plea. i don't understand why. my main question is why and i know that's my family too. why would you do this? to an innocent your own flesh and blood your own child. what why would you do this officers?

say the merced home or sophia's remains were found belonged to her mother's boyfriend dante jackson who is now wanted in connection with the murder most people that live in the neighborhood rarely saw anybody coming to him from the house. most people thought that the house was just abandoned for lottie says sophia was living with a family member and going to school in hayward when her mother picked her up. and took her away last october a report had been filed with child protective services. but hayward police say the allegations were unfounded at the time or lottie says family members last spoke with in february, they felt like my aunt did and my cousin that something wasn't right this time that it wasn't. okay, just a wonderful little girl that life was cut tragically short the times that i did see her she was always so bubbly and outgoing officers. tell me dante jackson worked in the bay area but has also been known to frequent the los angeles area his whereabout as of right now unknown.

the supplies are being sent to a nonprofit humanitarian group called direct relief, which has worked in ukraine for decades four more loads are standing by to ship if the request comes teachers strike in the cotati rohnert park school district is heading into a fifth day now tonight the school board listened to frustrated students and parents most of whom are supporting the teachers. not only has a reputation of our district suffered because of this action, but the future of public education this community is hanging in the balance. i'm embarrassed that you think teachers do not deserve more money because i'm assuming that none of you were able to get to the spot that you are in right now without school. we've had to deal with more than you've ever thought of and now classes are being canceled. i see no point in continuing going to school if i'm just going to sit on the bleachers all day and do nothing. teachers want a 6% raise this year, but the district's budget projections show that it would lead to a deficit by the end of next school year. where one step closer to not having to fall back ever again

the us senate passed a bill today that would make daylight saving time permanent starting next year supporters. say the change will spur economic activity reduced seasonal depression and allow kids to play outdoors later we can get this past we don't have to keep doing this stupidity anymore and why we would enshrine this in our laws and keep it for so long as beyond me, but hopefully this is the year that this gets done. and pardon the pun but this is idea whose time has come. critics argue the change would force kids to walk to school in the dark during winter months. the bill still has to pass the house and be signed by the president before it becomes law. new developments bars and restaurants in san francisco will get more time to get their parklets up to city regulations rules for the outdoor spots changed. once the mayor made the grand permanent last july the chronicle reports businesses won't face fines for most violations until next spring after supervisors today passed an ordinance delaying
